<div class="page" title="Page 1"><div class="layoutArea"><div class="column"><p><span>The advancement of science and technology has impacted functioning of the libraries of higher educational institutions, and the mode of providing resources for various academic activities. For many years, libraries attached to educational institutions have been labouring with the question of how to determine the value of journals in their </span><span>specific library collection. The Health Sciences Library of Manipal Academy of Higher Education at Manipal, </span><span>subscribed a vast number of online journals for their users. A relation between the usage and citations of subscribed online journals might provide a basis for the collection management in the libraries of academic and research institutions. The current study resolved to identify whether relationship exists between usage of subscribed online journals and their citations in the academic publications of the health science professionals from 2010 to 2015. The </span><span>study found a statistically significant relationship between subscribed online journal usage and their citations in the </span><span>publications through the inferential test of Spearman’s rank-order correlation. For collection development of online journals, libraries can utilise the usage or citation data of journals as a decision making tool. </span></p></div></div></div>

AbstractUndergraduate students whose programme includes a full academic year on an Erasmus study visit require a range of support before, during and after their year abroad. This study focuses on the support provided by the home academic coordinator during the students’ period of study abroad. The research is based on a case-study which explores how the maintenance of an online journal can enhance students’ new learning experiences. The outcomes of this investigation are of interest at a pragmatic level to Erasmus coordinators and educational institutions whose programmes include a study visit or an internship. At a theoretical level, this study brings together a number of areas that have each been the subject of prior research but that so far have not been pulled together, particularly in the context of a study visit to a foreign country. The areas referred to include the benefits and challenges of rolling out educational online journals; the use of blogging in language learning; the design of rubrics as a form of feedback and the activity of reflective writing in an online environment. The findings and the discussion show how the online journal has added a positive dimension to the year abroad, particularly in the areas of communication and feedback, peer support, language learning and technology.

The multiplicity of journals, financial constraints and the ever increasing needs of the user community necessitated the libraries to develop need based information resources. Journals are key to scholarly communication and study of the utilisation of subscribed electronic journals (e-journals) is important for libraries. A case study of usage of the subscribed e-journals in the KMC Health Sciences Library of Manipal University (MU), Manipal was conducted through citation analysis from the year 2010 to 2014. The study was performed with the objectives to determine-citations of subscribed e-journals made in academic publications of five health sciences institutions of MU, Manipal; annual growth rate of the publications and the citations; and frequently cited journals and those selected for publishing their documents. The Scopus citation database was used to retrieve all documents published from the five health science institutions using affiliation search, and from their reference list, the number of citations to the subscribed e-journals of the library were manually recorded. The study identified subscribed e-journals that were cited in published documents, cited frequently, and were selected for publishing the documents. The outcome showed that citation analysis is a practical and reliable method to provide usage information of the subscribed e-journals library.

AbstractDuring the health emergency generated by Covid-19, EAFIT University has worked closely with the National Ministry of Education (MoE) and its Vice-Ministry of Preschool, Basic and Secondary Education, providing ideas and guidelines to 96 certified Secretaries of Education (In Colombia, Secretaries of Education are responsible for managing resources and activities for the educational sector at the province and municipality level. Province governments coordinate educational service in all their municipalities except those over 100,000 inhabitants, which can apply to be certified and become autonomous in the management of their resources) in Colombia and strengthening their capacities to autonomously address the emergency in educational institutions. This work includes the development of a national project focused on collectively defining the actions needed for the successful return to academic activities.This experience is derived from the development, since 2012, of the UbiTAG (The name UbiTAG derives from “ubiquitous learning,” followed by tecnología–aprendizaje–gestión (“technology”–“learning”–“management”). The label was introduced in Zea et al. (2012)) model, a holistic approach to digital maturity and change management in schools that has been implemented through ongoing long-term projects in the Itagüí municipality (24 schools) and the Bogotá Capital District (383 schools). This case study will focus on the work that EAFIT has been doing during the emergency, supporting both the MoE and specific Secretaries of Education. In addition, the case will describe some aspects of the UbiTAG model that have helped to address the educational communities’ current challenges.

The current study explores the multifaceted and entwined structure of constraints and spaces of the possibilities of moving ahead among the Dooms of Jammu, India, where the possibilities of upward mobility through education as a means have been observed. Interviews and detailed case study were done with eight cases. Four overlapping super-ordinate themes developed during the course of study: (a) challenges of different generation learners, (b) lack of different forms of capital, (c) dis-identification from own and emulating others and (d) mushrooming of hybrid and mimic generation. The participants experienced the very process of change and continuity through education in their lives. It is observed that education helped in converting the morphology of their existing structure. Each of the interviewee has some exclusive experiences to share, offering significant insights into their lives, struggles and their conditions. The results indicate that the first-generation learners have to face many obstacles. The study concludes that education gives better results under certain circumstances. The chances of low caste children performing better are higher if the educational institutions run with mixed batches with students belonging to all the sections of the society.

AbstractResearchers often use their native languages to present and exchange ideas. To construct an individual author’s complete profile, a list of their English and non-English academic publications must be constructed. This paper presents a practical approach for multilingual author matching across different academic databases. Our approach automatically links the academic records of a target database to a researcher identifier of a source database. First, we extracted a comprehensive set of records in the target database, whose author names were identical to the researcher names in the source database. Then, we calculated multiple author similarity measures, which can be adopted in certain entity pairs from different language databases. Finally, we aggregated the measures to output an improved score that indicates the likelihood of each record as being the researcher’s work. Our method was found to be easy to implement, and its performance was evaluated in real database management settings. Experiments were conducted using DBLP and PubMed as the target English databases. As the Japanese database, KAKEN was the source for identifying researcher information. The results demonstrated each similarity measure’s performance, from which we observed that the score aggregation achieved stable performance. Our method can lessen human efforts to associate various scholarly contributions.

Although the number of countries that have adopted e-voting has decreased lately, the number of academic publications on e-voting adoption has increased in the last two years. To date, there is no coherent narrative in the existing literature that explains the progress of the research on e-voting adoption. This article aims to answer the following research question: “How has research on the topic of e-voting adoption progressed over the last 15 years?” The article provides a semi-systematic review of 78 studies that were conducted from 2005 to 2020. In this article, I argue that although the studies on e-voting adoption are dominated by a single case study, by research in the United States, and by the positivist paradigm, scholars have employed the term “e-voting adoption” diversely and the research on e-voting adoption has evolved to address more specific research questions. Recommendations for the future agenda of research on e-voting adoption are also discussed.

Abstract: This article discusses the intentions and experiences from architects and pedagogues involved in planning and establishing kindergartens with new building topologies in Oslo. The National Kindergarten effort (St.meld.nr. 24 2002-2003) with the political aim that all children between one and six years should have the right to attend kindergarten, led to a huge development of kindergarten buildings all over Norway. Many of the buildings were designed as new typologies named base and zone kindergartens. There are barely research on processes and consequences of the changes in physical structures in educational institutions. The results of the research presented here are based on a case study of processes in four municipalities in Oslo. It shows that the staff working in the new buildings had scarcely any knowledge of the intentions behind the new design, and the support in  establishing pedagogical work in new physical frames was limited. The aim of the article is to expand the knowledge about connections between architecture and pedagogic, and point to the importance of involving the staff/professionals in educational changes where the physical environment is at stake. These findings may be relevant to other transformations involving organizational and architectural changes. Sammendrag: Artikkelen drøfter intensjoner og erfaringer hos arkitekter og pedagoger involvert i planlegging og etablering av barnehager med nye bygningstypologier i Oslo. Barnehageforliket (St.meld.nr.24 2002-2003) innebar et politisk vedtak om barnehageplass for alle og førte til en massiv utbygging av barnehager over hele landet. Mange av de nye byggene ble oppført med nye typer planløsninger (base- og sonebarnehager). Det finnes lite forskning om prosesser og konsekvenser knyttet til endring av fysiske strukturer i pedagogiske institusjoner. Forskningsresultatene som presenteres i artikkelen er basert på en casestudie av prosesser i fire bydeler i Oslo, og viser at personalet i de nye byggene hadde lite kjennskap til intensjoner bak byggenes utforming og opplevde lite støtte i etableringsprosessen. Artikkelens formål er å bidra til kunnskap om betydningen av å involvere personalet i pedagogiske reformer og i utvikling av det fysiske miljøet. Funnene kan ha overføringsverdi til andre reformer som innebærer organisatoriske og arkitektoniske endringer.
