The main aim of the presented tests was to assess the possibility of using 3D printing and casting material to produce casting molds and prototypes, especially in production of existing models. The analysis was based on the assessment of dimensional accuracy and quality of the surface layer of a finished prototype and the intermediate elements made during the production process. The mold was made using the PolyJet Matrix additive technology, and then a silicone mold was cast which was used to prepare a finished sample for testing in accordance with the design assumptions. Based on the results of metrological measurements, the phenomenon of technological inheritance in terms of error transfer in the foundry industry was evaluated. The measurements obtained suggest that in case of casting process, the hereditary features are transferred from individual casting processes, which is especially prominent in the case of surface texture quality. This confirms the occurrence of the phenomenon of the so-called technological inheritance and the need to analyze it. The results of the tests can be a guide for technologists who design molds, core boxes, and casting models, concerning the corrections (shrinkage) that need to be introduced at the design stage in order to obtain a product (casting) of satisfactory dimensional accuracy and quality of the surface layer. The result can also be useful for casting materials reinforced with glass fiber, carbon fiber, which are common materials in 3D printing and textile industry.

Technologically, ultrajet mesodiagnostics (UJM) consists of local hydroerosive indentation by ultrajets (UJ) of water on the surface of the analyzed object (OA) and the subsequent study of the results of this minimally invasive microdestructive effect on its surface layer. Obviously, mathematical models’ construction of the functional relationship between the informative-physical signs of hydroerosive UJ destruction and the surface layer’s state parameters of various OA, primarily their defectiveness, is very important for the development of this potentially promising technology for ensuring the quality of critical products, mainly aviation and other industries. In this regard, the work proposes a probabilistic UJM model, which consists of analyzing the kinetics of the formation of an aggregate set of eroded particles, as a process caused by a combination of appropriate necessary and sufficient conditions for its implementation. The former include the topographic features of the microdefectiveness’ characteristics of the surface layer material, and the latter consist of a certain variational-force hydrodynamic effect of the diagnostic UJ on it. This approach made it possible to obtain calculated data related to probabilistic distribution of the UJ-eroded particles’ sizes of hypothetical OA, as a coordinate function describing the microdefects’ concentration in its surface layer. These functions are close to the available results of experimental UJM of typical and promising materials used in the manufacture of machinery technology.

Abstract This research presents comprehensive assessment of the precision castings quality made in the Replicast CS process. The evaluation was made based on quality of the surface layer, shape errors and the accuracy of the linear dimensions. Studies were carried out on the modern equipment, among other things a Zeiss Calypso measuring machine and profilometer were used. Obtained results allowed comparing lost wax process models and Replicast CS process.

The problems of analyzing metallographic images and the method of their solution using modern software for the analysis of metallographic images are described. There is given an analysis of microstructure images as the main indicator of the surface layer quality by the example of studying the research results of strain wave hardening combinations and chemical-thermal treatment, in particular the influence of previous strain wave hardening and subsequent thermal and chemical- thermal treatment on the alloy steel microstructure or previous thermal and chemical- thermal treatment and subsequent strain wave hardening. On the basis of the analysis the effectiveness of strain wave hardening and chemical and thermal treatment is established.

The existing technologies of production of compressor blade butts related with traditional machining methods, including broaching and milling. Application of these machining methods requires further superfinishing operations to ensure the required quality of compressor blades. The automated highly-productive grinding of blade butts is an effective method to improve performance and quality of blade production. The technologies of profile and contour grinding of blades of a rotor and a compressor stator provide an automated machining of the outer parts contour in the same coordinate system, implement machining based on 3-D models of theoretical blade surfaces, ensure the required quality parameters of the part surface layer without additional finishing operations.

The results of experimental studies of the thin surface layer of samples made of steel 45 after treatment with surface plastic deformation (SPD) multiradius roller (MR-roller) are presented. On the basis of the apparatus of the mechanics of technological inheritance, taking into account the effect of the solidified body, a model of the process according to the scheme of multiple loading-unloading of metal, taking into account the phenomenology of the SPD process and the properties of the material, is created. Distributions of parameters of the stress-strain state in the deformation centre are obtained, the parameters of roughness and microhardness of the surface layer are investigated.

The durability of concrete can be assessed based on the quality of the surface layer of concrete, for which there are a few standardized assessment test methods. Usually, the quality of the surface layer of concrete is evaluated based on its air and water permeability. The aim of this experiment was to compare the outputs which provide some methods for determining the permeability of the surface layer of concrete (GWT, ISAT, TPT, the depth of penetration of water under pressure). The measured values using the individual methods of assessing the permeability of the surface layer of concrete very closely correspond.
