AbstractIn inquiry-based science lessons teachers face the challenge of adhering to curricular goals while simultaneously following students’ intuitive understandings. Improvisation (improv) provides a useful frame for understanding teaching in these inquiry-based contexts. This paper builds from prior work that uses improv as a metaphor for teaching to present a translated model for analysis of teaching in an inquiry-based, elementary school science lesson context. We call our model instructional improv, which shows how a teacher spontaneously synthesizes rules of improv with teaching practices to support student learning, engagement, and agency. We illustrate instructional improv through case study analysis of video recorded classroom interactions with one teacher and 26 first and second grade students learning about the complex system of honey bee pollination in a mixed reality environment. Our model includes the following defining features to describe how teaching happens in this context: the teacher 1) tells a story; 2) reframes mistakes as opportunities; 3) agrees; 4) yes ands; 5) makes statements (or asks questions that elicit statements); and 6) puts the needs of the classroom ensemble over individuals. Overall, we show how instructional improv helps explain how teachers can support science discourse and collective storytelling as a teacher (a) shifts power and agency to students; (b) balances learning and agency; and (c) makes purposeful instructional decisions. Findings have immediate implications for researchers analyzing interactions in inquiry-based learning environments and potential future implications for teachers to support inquiry learning.

Based on the fact that teachers feel the low reading skills of students because they feel bored and lack of interest in learning. It is because the teacher does not use media that made students interesting and used the method of spelling and is not supported by supporting books such as pictorial storybooks that make students interested in reading. For this reason, the teacher used pictorial word cards to improve students reading skills. The form of research is classroom action research, collaborative in nature, the subjects in this study were students of second-grade SDN (State Elementary School) 36 Sungai Ambawang, and researchers who also acted as teachers. The procedure in this study follows the main stages, namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Research techniques are direct observation and measurement techniques, data collection tools used are observation sheets and tests. The results of the implementation of the act of learning to read using pictorial cards in each cycle always increases. In the first cycle, the success of students' reading skills achieved 55.55%, then in the second cycle increased to 100%. With an average value of 62.22 in the first cycle and the second cycle, the average value increased to 77.77. Based on the description above, it can generally be concluded that the use of pictorial word cards can improve the reading skills of grade 1 students of SDN 36 Sungai Ambawang. Thus the pictorial word card media can be used during the learning process of reading to improve students' reading skills.

This study is aimed to find out the correlation between: (1) reading habit and reading skills of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar; (2) vocabulary mastery and reading skills of the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar; (3) reading habit and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and reading skills of the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar. The study focused on English lesson material that was involved reading activities. The study belongs to correlational study. The population was all of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar. The sample was 24 students that were selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used to collect the data were tests and questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of reading habit. The techniques used to analyze the data were Simple and Multiple Linear Regression and Correlation. The result of the study show that (1) there is a positive correlation between students’ reading habit and students’ reading skill that can be showed r-count is more than rtable (2.553>1.717); (2) there is a positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ reading skills that can be showed r-count is more that r-table (2.120>1.717); (3) there is a positive correlation between students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and students’ reading skills that can be showed fcount is more that f-table (6.266>3.467). With regard to the result of the study, it can be concluded that positive correlation between reading habit and vocabulary mastery and reading skills indicates that both reading habit and vocabulary mastery could support and ultimately give contribution to reading skills. Hence, students’ reading and vocabulary mastery need to be considered in the teaching and learning activities of reading.

Abstract: This research concerned transitivity in reading text for senior high school. The purposes of this research were to describe and to find out the dominant process types of transitivity occurred in the reading text. This research was descriptive qualitative. The data was obtained from reading text in English textbook entitled Pathway to English. The result of the research were six types of process that occurred in the textbook. There were material process (38%), relational process (30%), verbal process (20%), mental process (19%), behavioural process (4%), and existential process (2%). The dominant types of transitivity was material process. It means that reading passage in English textbook entitled Pathway to English contained action and physicaly. Futhermore, the benefit that can be gained from analyzing the transitivity in the text could stimulate the reading skills to comprehend the idea and information in a text that could be applied in spoken and written texts.

The aim of this research was to examine the directed reading thinking activity (DRTA) strategy on students’ reading skills. This research was classified as experimental research applying a quasi-experimental design. This study involved 60 students of second-grade students of SMPN 1 Jonggat. The students were divided into two groups, the experimental and control groups. The experimental group was subjected to DRTA strategy, while the control group was treated using the conventional learning strategy. The data were obtained by using a reading test. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The data were calculated using SPSS 19.0 for Windows. The descriptive statistic was aimed at finding out the students’ mean score, mode, median, and standard deviation. Hence, the inferential statistic was used to test the research hypothesis using the independent sample t-test. The results of the research showed that the DRTA strategy in teaching reading had a more positive effect than the conventional learning strategy. It was proven that the students’ mean score in the experimental class (78.80) was higher than those in the control group (73.73). In addition, the score of 2-tailed (0.032) was lower than the sig. level 0.05. Therefore, the hypothesis was accepted. It means that the directed reading thinking (DRTA) strategy had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension.

The researcher attempted to determine whether instruction using colored rhythmic notation affected first- and second-grade students' rhythm-reading skills. As a regular part of general music classes, 64 experimental-group students participated in reading, clapping, and vocalizing rhythms notated in color. Seventy control subjects participated in identical activities in which rhythms were notated without color. Subjects were tested individually using both colored and uncolored notation. Results after the 23-week treatment period revealed that the experimental group scored slightly higher when reading both colored and uncolored notation than did the control group. Group differences on the colored-notation task were statistically significant ( p < .05). Experimental and control-group means did not differ significantly ( p > .05) when reading uncolored notation. Comparison between the scores of each group on the task similar to the training mode (color-trained students reading colored notation versus control students reading uncolored notation) also showed the experimental mean to be slightly but significantly ( p < .05) higher. A positive affective influence was noted in that 78% of all students favored the colored-notation task as the exercise they liked performing the most.

Reading is an important element in the process of learning Arabic and is one of the language skills. Reading helps students to absorb knowledge and increase interest in writing. Then qiraah can improve students' knowledge with vocabulary, sentences, and editors that can be used in speaking and writing skills. The fahmul maqruk is one of the subjects in the Insan Qur'ani boarding school which aims to enrich students in understanding the reading text. Through observations that the researchers did, it was found that second grade students of the senior high school did not yet master Arabic, especially reading skills. They can read Arabic texts, but do not understand it and are they are unable to answer quetions in the book text. Although the teacher has explained them some of the vocubulary in the book related to the text. This study aims to find out response of teacher and students at Insan Qur’ani Islamic Boarding School in teaching the language using this model and to find out the effectiveness of Quantum Reading model implementation to improve students in reading comprehension. The research method of this study is experimental research. Researcher conducted this study in a group called “One Group Pre-Test Post Test Design”. The result of this research is the teacher and students response in reading teaching using this model is excellent with the achievement of observation value of teacher activity is P = 87,5% between 81-100% with excellent category and observation value of students activity is P = 82,5% between 81-100% with excellent category too. And the aplication of this model effectuve to improve students’ ability in reading comprehension, the proof is that the value of T-test with p -value sig. (2-tailed) is smaller than the value of alpha ⍺ = 0,05 or (T-test < ⍺ = 0,05) with value is (0,000 < 0,05).
