Antioxidant compounds play a significant role in preventing and scavenging free-radicals by reducing oxidative stress and providing protection to humans against degenerative diseases and infections. Obviously, antioxidant molecules of plant origin are pivotal to combat the oxidative harm in cells. Present work intended to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the fruits of Spondias pinnata. Methanol extracts of the fruits at two stages of maturity were prepared and investigated by various antioxidants analyses such as total antioxidant activity, reducing power and radical scavenging assays (DPPH, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide). Its total phenol, flavonoid and tannin contents were also determined. Spondias pinnata fruit extracts exhibited effective antioxidant activity and its IC50 values of the unripe fruits were 65, 66, 72.23, 83.25, 66.75 ?g/ml and ripe fruits were 124.24, 92.50, 97.66, 144.10, 72.25 ?g/ml, for total antioxidant activity, reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging, nitric oxide radical scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays respectively. The extracts, especially unripe fruit extract had good amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid contents which might contribute the antioxidant activities considerably. It is evident from the study that the fruits of S. pinnata possessed potent antioxidant activity and it can be considered as a good dietary choice among the underutilized fruits as well as common fruits. Therefore, wild mango may be a good choice of antioxidants of plant origin for dietary and pharmaceutical uses.

It was reported that 8-hydroxygenistein (8-OHG) was synthesized by methylation, bromination, methoxylation, and demethylation using cheap and readily available biochanin A as raw material. All synthesized products were structurally confirmed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and 13C-NMR. In addition, we examined the antioxidant capacity of 8-OHG using 6 different methods such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging, 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) radical (ABTS) scavenging, nitric oxide radical (NO) scavenging, superoxide radical (O2 −•) scavenging, reducing power assay, and total antioxidant activity using ascorbic acid (VC) as a positive control. Compared with VC, 8-OHG exhibited higher total antioxidant activity and stronger scavenging activity on ABTS, NO, and O2 −•. These results indicate that 8-OHG is an excellent antioxidant agent and may be effective in preventing damage induced by free radical.

The present study was designed to confirm the traditional use of the fruits of Ficus hispida Linn. (Moraceae) as an antioxidant agent. Fruits of the plant extracted with methanol and crude methanol extract (CME) were further fractionated with n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. All the fractions, n-hexane (NHF), chloroform (CHF), ethyl acetate (EAF), aqueous (AQF) and CME were preliminary screened for in vitro antioxidant activity and total phenolic and total flavonoid content. In DPPH radical scavenging assay, CME exhibited highest scavenging activity (IC50 = 11.20 µg/mL) as compared to other fractions. In this assay, IC50 of reference standard BHT was 5.10 µg/mL. The reducing power of the samples was in the order as AQF > CME > CHF > EAF > NHF. The results for hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity indicated that CME, EAF and AQF had almost the same scavenging activity except NHF. Total antioxidant capacity of CME and other fractions were ranked as CHF > AQF > CME > EAF > NHF.  In the assay of antioxidant constituents (total phenol and total flavonoids content), the CME had highest phenolic and flavonoids content. The results indicate that Ficus hispida fruits could be considered as a potential source of natural antioxidant.

Background: The investigation of total flavonoids and antioxidant activity of polar extracts of Corchorus depressus is the major aim of this study. As observed from ancient literatures and folkloric claims the plant Corchorus depressus worshipped by the married women of Odisha, India, in the rituals called as “Jama Jutia”, possesses different biological activities including antioxidant property. Methods: The diphenyl picryl hydrazine, hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide radical scavenging methods were performed for measurement of the antioxidant activity at different extracts. The flavonoid and phenolic content of the extracts were determined by using aluminium chloride and Folin-Ciocalteau’s reagent (FCR) methods respectively. Results: The results for estimation of total phenolic content (mg/ 100 g) expressed as gallic acid equivalent (GAE) and total flavonoid (mg/ 100 g) in weight of quercetin equivalent (QE) was highest in methanolic extract 78.46 and  21.2 respectively, followed by 18.18 mg/100 g in GAE and 1.80 mg/100 g in QE for aqueous extract. Conclusion: The methanolic extract of C. depressus at 100µg/ml showed highest DPPH, hydroxyl and nitric oxide radical scavenging activity and this activity may be attributed to the presence of saponins and flavonoids as detected in the extract.

This study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Iraqi sumac seeds (Rhus coriaria. L) (Anacardiaceae). Total phenolic compounds and flavoniods were determined in three different sumac seed extracts (SSE) (aqueous,ethanolic and methanolic extract). For extraction Antioxidant activity of SSE were evaluated by various antioxidant assays, including total antioxidant capacity, reducing power,by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, nitric oxide scavenging, Hydroxyl radical scavenging, and metal ion chelating activities. These various antioxidant activities were compared with ascorbic acid as a standard antioxidant.The results showed that the three(SSE), contained large amounts of phenolic and flavoniods compounds. The results also showed that the three( SSEs ) have antioxidant activities , the methanolic (SSEs) contain larger amounts of phenolic and flavoniod compounds and have a higher antioxidant activities than that of aqueous or ethanolic (SSE).These results indicated that Iraqi aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Iraqi sumac in especial methanolic) SSE( are good scavengers for reactive oxygen species(ROS) and are a potential source of natural antioxidant, that may be used in pharmaceutical or food industry .

Objective: : The objective of the present study was to measure antioxidant activity and to evaluate the phytochemical constitution of Helichrysum lacteum growing in Algeria. Methods: : The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was performed by spectroscopic methods. Antioxidant activity of the extracts the crude extracts (PE, EtOAc, and n-BuOH) and pure compound (noryangonin (3)) was investigated by 5 methods, including DPPH free radical scavenging activity, reducing power and ferric thiocyanate methods, hydrogen peroxide scavenging capacity, and total antioxidant activity by phosphomolybdate assay. Results: : The chemical investigation of the EtOAc extract of the aerial parts of H. lacteum led to the isolation of two flavonoids, astragalin (1) and isoquercitrin (2), together with a styryl pyrone, noryangonin (3), and a cyclobutane dimer, achyrodimer C (4) as well as two triterpenoid compounds, β-sitosterol (5) and oleanolic acid (6). The highest phenolic and flavonoid contents were detected in the ethyl acetate extract. Noryangonin exhibited the highest antioxidant activity than those of the references and all the tested extracts, with a value of IC50 at 1.45±0.44 μg/mL in DPPH scavenging. In hydrogen peroxide scavenging essay, the results revealed that EtOAc extract exhibited the highest percent inhibition (63.15 %) as compared to the ascorbic acid (63.36 %) at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. In the phosphomolybdenum method, the EtOAc extract showed the strongest activity (36.85±0.02 μg EAA/mg ex) as compared to those of n-BuOH and PE extracts. Conclusion: : The antioxidant property shown in these findings needs further investigation, especially with the pure compound (3).

Abstract Objectives Inhibition of carbohydrate absorption from intestine is an efficient way to prevent type 2 diabetes. Some edible plants have shown the potential as anti-diabetic agents by inhibiting carbohydrate-digestive enzymes in intestine. In terms of edible plant's health effect, bioactive compounds’ stability during the process of digestive enzymes has been commonly questioned. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to 1) examine inhibitory effect of garlic scape (GS), the green flower head of garlic on carbohydrate-degrading enzymes and 2) investigate antioxidant activity and total phenolic content (TPC) of GS treated with intestinal digestive enzymes. Methods GS extract (GSE) was prepared with 80% methanol (v/v) by homogenization, sonication, and filtration, and evaporation. α-glucosidase, maltase, glucoamylase, sucrase, α-amylase inhibitory activities were determined by measuring glucose hydrolyzed from nitrophenyl-glucopyranoside, maltose, starch, sucrose, and starch, respectively. To prepare gastrointestinal enzyme-digested GSE, GSE was digested with pepsin and a pancreatin-bile solution. GSE and gastrointestinal enzyme-digested GSE were assessed for TPC using a Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and for total antioxidant and radical scavenging activities by the following methods, phosphomolybdeum, 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods, respectively. Results GSE (20 mg/ml) showed 30%, 50%, and 42% inhibition on α-glucosidase, maltase, and glucoamylase enzyme activities, respectively. GSE (50 mg/ml) showed 55.1% DPPH radical and 5782 mg vitamin C equivalent (VCE)/g ABTS radical scavenging activities. Total antioxidant activity of the GSE (1.5 mg/ml) exhibited 2.76 mg VCE/g. Consistent with its antioxidant property, the GSE showed a dose-dependent increase in TPC. Gastrointestinal enzymatic treatment resulted in approximately 46% reduction in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity, and TPC of the GSE. Conclusions Garlic scape has the potential as a natural anti-diabetic agent. Garlic scape keeps beneficial effects after the process of intestinal digestive system. <p>As a common beverage, green tea is supposed to have beneficial health effect, such as antioxidant. At present, there are many green teas available in the market in Jakarta. Their quality, in their antioxidant activity, should be proved. This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of extracts of green tea products commercially available in Jakarta. Four green tea samples from different factories (coded as A, B, C, and D) were selected and macerated using methanol. DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power ability and total antioxidant capacity were used to measure the antioxidant activity. The total phenolic content (TPC) was also determined. The studied green teas had varied TPC from 23.80  to  84.03 mG GAE/g extract, ranked as B &gt; D &gt; A &gt; C. All samples exhibited various but strong antioxidant activity by DPPH assay, even better than standards ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). However, all extracts showed similar activities in their reducing power ability and total antioxidant capacity, with activities less than standards.<strong> </strong>These findings confirm that the quality of the Indonesian commercial green teas were heterogeneous both in TPC or DPPH scavenging capacity. But, there is an indication that they are good as an antioxidant containing beverage. </p>

Cucumis melo L. (C. melo) is a fruit with many medicinal properties and is consumed in various countries. It is utilised for chronic eczema and to treat minor burns and scrapes. The present study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activity of a methanolic extract of Cucumis melo Linn (MECM). A coarse powder prepared from the fruit and seeds was extracted with methanol (absolute) by a hot continuous percolation process in accordance with the standard protocols. All the extracts were estimated for potential antioxidant activities with tests such as an estimation of total antioxidant activity, hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide scavenging activity and reducing power ability. The qualitative analysis of the methanolic extract of C. melo fruit showed the presence of various phytochemical constituents such as carbohydrates, alkaloids, sterols, phenolic compounds, terpenes and flavonoids. The total antioxidant activity of concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 µg were tested and observed to be 3.3 ± 0.1732, 6.867 ± 0.5457 and 13.63 ± 0.8295 µg of ascorbic acid, respectively. The results also showed significant nitric oxide and DPPH scavenging activities as well as a reducing power activity of MECM. Thus, our results suggest that MECM may serve as a putative source of natural antioxidants for therapeutic and nutraceutical applications.

Antioxidant Activity of Milling Fractions of Selected CerealsThe aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant potential of four milling fractions of selected cereals grew in the year 2009 and 2010. Free radical scavenging activity of samples was measured using DPPH assay and reducing power was determined using FRAP assay. Secondary, total phenolic and flavonoid content of cereal extracts was evaluated. We found that flour fractions (break flour and reduction flour) showed the lower proportion of the total antioxidant potential than bran fractions (fine bran and coarse bran), which was balanced in observed years. Extract from barley had the highest values of antioxidant activity and polyphenol content.

Aims: Our study was carried out to appraise the phytochemical screening and antioxidant potentials of Sonneratia caseolaris (Linn.) bark extracts. Study Design:  For the purpose of this experiment the extracts were subjected for an in-vitro study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in August 2014 in the Department of Pharmacy, Southeast University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Methodology: The various fractions of Sonneratia caseolaris (Linn.)  barks as Ethanolic (ETF), ethyl acetate (EAF), chloroform(CLF) and pet ether (PTF) fractions-were obtained after extraction were subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening. The antioxidant capacity of these fractions were evaluated using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay .Total antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of ETF, EAF, CLF and PTF  extracts of S. caseolaris were determined. Results: The phytochemical screening showed the presence of flavonoid, steroid, tannin compounds in large amounts. In DPPH scavenging assay among the extracts, ethanolic fractions exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity with IC50 of 4.57 μg /ml .The highest phenolic content was found in EAF extracts (63.00 mg of GAE / g. of dried extract) followed by CLF (36.25 mg of GAE / g. of dried extract) and PTF (26.28 mg of GAE /g. of dried extract). The highest total antioxidant activity was also found in ETF fraction (185 GAE/g of dried sample followed by EAF fraction (99.00GAE/g of dried sample), PTF (84.00 GAE/g of dried sample) and Chloroform (49.00 GAE/g of dried sample). Conclusion: Our result demonstrates that all the extractives of S. caseolaris have appreciable antioxidant activities. But, further study is necessary to isolate the active compounds.
