<p>As a common beverage, green tea is supposed to have beneficial health effect, such as antioxidant. At present, there are many green teas available in the market in Jakarta. Their quality, in their antioxidant activity, should be proved. This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of extracts of green tea products commercially available in Jakarta. Four green tea samples from different factories (coded as A, B, C, and D) were selected and macerated using methanol. DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power ability and total antioxidant capacity were used to measure the antioxidant activity. The total phenolic content (TPC) was also determined. The studied green teas had varied TPC from 23.80  to  84.03 mG GAE/g extract, ranked as B &gt; D &gt; A &gt; C. All samples exhibited various but strong antioxidant activity by DPPH assay, even better than standards ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). However, all extracts showed similar activities in their reducing power ability and total antioxidant capacity, with activities less than standards.<strong> </strong>These findings confirm that the quality of the Indonesian commercial green teas were heterogeneous both in TPC or DPPH scavenging capacity. But, there is an indication that they are good as an antioxidant containing beverage. </p>

Sago Baruk (Arenga microcarpha) is one of endemic crop type of Archipelago of Sangihe Talaud, North Sulawesi and potential as source bioactivities including antioxidant. The objectives of this research were to determine the chemical characteristics and antioxidant activity of starch sago baruk which was sequentially extracted with water and filtrate. The sago trunks pith was sequentially extracted with water and filtrate at room temparature for 1 hour. After that, starch of sago baruk were analyzed for their chemical composition (moisture, fat, protein, ash crude fiber and charbohydrate) and total phenolic and tannin condensed content. Antioxidant activity of each sago flour were evaluated in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and total antioxidant capacity. After that, the starch was characterized by IR spectroscopic technique. The sequential extraction result indicated percentage yield of starch I and starch II were 41.39% and 38.21%. The chemical characteristics of starch I revealed that percentage protein, ash, crude fibre and fat were below 1% than starch II especially protein and fiber crude. The starch I had highest total phenolic and tannin condensed content than starch II and starch K. The starch I also showed the highest free radical scavenging activity in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical than starch II and starch K. The result also showed that starch I has strongest total antioxidant capacity than starch II and starch K at all concentration level. Antioxidant activity of three starch increased with the increase in concentration of the samples. The three starch showed of hidroxy (OH), carbonyl (C=O), ether (C-O) and aliphatic group (C-C). It is concluded that starch sago baruk especially the starch I are very rich in antioxidant substituens.

Avocado peel has been considered as a potential source of natural antioxidants in which phenolics are among the most important compounds. Therefore, this study aims to optimize the extraction process of phenolics using response surface methodology and evaluate the corresponding antioxidant activity. From the quadratic model, the optimal condition was determined including the ethanol concentration 54.55% (v/v), the solvent/solute ratio 71.82/1 (mL/g), temperature 53.03 oC and extraction time 99.09 min. The total phenolic content and the total antioxidant capacity at this condition with minor modifications were 26,74 ± 0,04 (mg GAE/g DW) and 188.06 ± 1.41 (mg AAE/g DW), respectively. The significant correlation between total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity was also confirmed. Antioxidant compounds play a significant role in preventing and scavenging free-radicals by reducing oxidative stress and providing protection to humans against degenerative diseases and infections. Obviously, antioxidant molecules of plant origin are pivotal to combat the oxidative harm in cells. Present work intended to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the fruits of Spondias pinnata. Methanol extracts of the fruits at two stages of maturity were prepared and investigated by various antioxidants analyses such as total antioxidant activity, reducing power and radical scavenging assays (DPPH, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide). Its total phenol, flavonoid and tannin contents were also determined. Spondias pinnata fruit extracts exhibited effective antioxidant activity and its IC50 values of the unripe fruits were 65, 66, 72.23, 83.25, 66.75 ?g/ml and ripe fruits were 124.24, 92.50, 97.66, 144.10, 72.25 ?g/ml, for total antioxidant activity, reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging, nitric oxide radical scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays respectively. The extracts, especially unripe fruit extract had good amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid contents which might contribute the antioxidant activities considerably. It is evident from the study that the fruits of S. pinnata possessed potent antioxidant activity and it can be considered as a good dietary choice among the underutilized fruits as well as common fruits. Therefore, wild mango may be a good choice of antioxidants of plant origin for dietary and pharmaceutical uses.

Modern civilization is facing more than hundreds of disorders associated with free radicals and natural antioxidants from non-edible plants are gaining importance to fight these disorders. The intention of this report is to evaluate a well known medicinal weed Ageratum conyzoides stems for its antioxidant and cytotoxic Effects. Antioxidant potentiality of the crude methanolic extract of the Ageratum conyzoides (AC) stems was investigated on DPPH scavenging activity, reducing ability, total antioxidant capacity as well as total phenolic contents. Cytotoxic study was done by brine shrimp lethality bioassay and vincristin sulphate was used as standard. The total phenols and total antioxidant capacity of AC was found to be 38.125 ± 2.01mg/g equivalent of gallic acid and 333.37 ± 4.22mg/gm equivalent of ascorbic acid, respectively. The percentage (%) scavenging of DPPH free radical of the extract was found to be concentration dependent with IC50 value 46.01 ± 2.23µg/ml while IC50 value of standard ascorbic acid was found to be 29.56 ± 0.11?g/ml. The reducing power of AC was found to be concentration dependent. The cytotoxicity exhibited by AC was found promising with LC50 value 1.32?g/ml, comparing with the LC50 (0.689?g/ml) values of vincristin sulphate. Objective: In this study, we were interested in qualitative, quantitative phytochemical characterization and evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of the total extracts of a plant from northern Morocco, the species selected for this study is Withania frutescens. Materials and Methods: Analysis of mineral elements by inductive coupling plasma-atomic absorption spectroscopy (ICP-AES), phytochemical screening, polyphenol and tannin assays, evaluation of antioxidant activity by the 1,2-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging method and reducing power. Results: The plant contains alkaloids, saponins, tannins, mucilages, and coumarins. It has a relatively high content of total polyphenols and tannins of 19.53±0.018 μg genetic generalized epilepsy/mg MS and 6.258±0.062 μg Eqcat/mg MS, respectively. The analysis of mineral elements by ICP-AES shows that our species is rich in mineral elements which are calcium, magnesium, and sodium, and it is devoid of metallic elements such as nickel, lead, cadmium, and cobalt. The evaluation of antioxidant activity by the DPPH free radical scavenging method shows that the half maximal inhibitory concentration of the tested extracts has an antiradical activity of about 0.056±0.008 μg/ml for the ethanol extract and 0.213±0.004 μg/ml for the methanol extract compared to the butylated hydroxytoluene value of 0.009±0.0004 μg/ml which was used as a reference. The reducing capacity test shows that methanolic extract has a high antioxidant capacity (0.213±0.006) compared to ethanolic extract (0.043±0.004) but remains low compared to ascorbic acid (0.003±0.0004) which was used as reference. Conclusion: Phytochemical analysis of W. frutescens shows that this plant is rich in high quantities of alkaloids, saponins, mucilage, tannins, and coumarins. It contains an average amount of total polyphenols and tannins that confer significant antioxidant activity to the plant studied.

The current study was designated to explore the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the methanolic extract of Magnolia champaca stem bark and its different fractions. Antioxidant activity was assessed using total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power, DPPH, hydroxyl and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against five gram positive and five gram negative bacteria using disc diffusion assay method. Among the different fractions, chloroform fraction (CHF) and ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) showed the highest antioxidant activity whereas aqueous fraction (AQF) showed lowest activity in DPPH radical scavenging assay with IC50 of 12.12, 22.41 and 55.16 μg/ml, respectively. Both of the extracts CHF and EAF also exhibited highest total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity with concentration dependent manner when compared to standard BHT. Moderate to potent antibacterial activity was observed against all tested organisms compared to standard azithromycin. The results from the present study revealed that the different fractions of stem bark of M. champaca specially CHF and EAF possess antioxidant and antibacterial property which support its use in traditional medicine and suggesting that the plant may be further investigated to discover its pharmacologically active natural products. The present study was designed to confirm the traditional use of the fruits of Ficus hispida Linn. (Moraceae) as an antioxidant agent. Fruits of the plant extracted with methanol and crude methanol extract (CME) were further fractionated with n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. All the fractions, n-hexane (NHF), chloroform (CHF), ethyl acetate (EAF), aqueous (AQF) and CME were preliminary screened for in vitro antioxidant activity and total phenolic and total flavonoid content. In DPPH radical scavenging assay, CME exhibited highest scavenging activity (IC50 = 11.20 µg/mL) as compared to other fractions. In this assay, IC50 of reference standard BHT was 5.10 µg/mL. The reducing power of the samples was in the order as AQF > CME > CHF > EAF > NHF. The results for hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity indicated that CME, EAF and AQF had almost the same scavenging activity except NHF. Total antioxidant capacity of CME and other fractions were ranked as CHF > AQF > CME > EAF > NHF.  In the assay of antioxidant constituents (total phenol and total flavonoids content), the CME had highest phenolic and flavonoids content. The results indicate that Ficus hispida fruits could be considered as a potential source of natural antioxidant.

Abstract Carrot (Daucus carota L.) is one of the main root vegetables rich in bioactive compounds with appreciable health-promoting properties, largely consumed in Algeria. In the current study, the storage effect (at 4 °C throughout 12 days) on bioactive compound stability and the antioxidant activity of two Algerian orange carrot varieties (Supermuscade and Touchon) were investigated. Total phenolic content of samples was determined by the Folin–Ciocâlteu method. Antioxidant capacity was determined spectrophotometrically, based on the evaluation of Free Radical Scavenging Activity (FRSA) using DPPH radical and Ferric Reducing Power (FRP). The results showed that the Touchon variety is richer in phenolics, flavonoids, and carotenoids and presents higher antioxidant activity in comparison with the Supermuscade variety. At the end of storage, the bioactive compound content and antiradical activity increased significantly (p < 0.05). Also, an extremely significant correlation (p < 0.001) was observed between the antioxidant contents and the antioxidant capacities of aqueous carrot extracts.

Herbal medicines has been the most cost-effective and valuable medical practice to cure diseases and emphasize modern health care treatment. The present research was conducted to assess the biological activities of 10 fractions obtained from methanolic extract which was derived from dried seeds of Sesamum indicum. Antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH radical scavenging, total antioxidant capacity and total reducing power assays. Highest free radical scavenging activity (80.3 ± 1.36%), total antioxidant capacity (104.7 ± 4.04 μg AAE/mg) and ferric reducing power activity (238.76 ± 1.23 μg AAE/mg) was shown by fraction SE. Fraction SE showed the highest phenolic contents (63.72 ± 1.5 μg GAE/mg) while fraction SG sample showed highest flavonoid contents (54.62 ± 2.61 μg QE QE/mg). Antibacterial activity was performed against four selected bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogens and Bacillus subtilis. Highest inhibition was shown by fraction SD (11 ± 1.04 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus, fraction SH against Bacillus subtilis (11 ± 1.06 mm) and fraction SB against Escherichia coli. All fractions were found inactive against the selected fungal strains. While performing antileishmanial activity, fraction SC showed highest percent mortality (78%) of Leishmania tropica. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, fraction SG showed significant LD50 value (23.48 μg/mL).

This study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Iraqi sumac seeds (Rhus coriaria. L) (Anacardiaceae). Total phenolic compounds and flavoniods were determined in three different sumac seed extracts (SSE) (aqueous,ethanolic and methanolic extract). For extraction Antioxidant activity of SSE were evaluated by various antioxidant assays, including total antioxidant capacity, reducing power,by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, nitric oxide scavenging, Hydroxyl radical scavenging, and metal ion chelating activities. These various antioxidant activities were compared with ascorbic acid as a standard antioxidant.The results showed that the three(SSE), contained large amounts of phenolic and flavoniods compounds. The results also showed that the three( SSEs ) have antioxidant activities , the methanolic (SSEs) contain larger amounts of phenolic and flavoniod compounds and have a higher antioxidant activities than that of aqueous or ethanolic (SSE).These results indicated that Iraqi aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Iraqi sumac in especial methanolic) SSE( are good scavengers for reactive oxygen species(ROS) and are a potential source of natural antioxidant, that may be used in pharmaceutical or food industry .
