Microfinance is regarded by many international development agencies including the World Bank as an effective mechanism for poverty reduction. However, as pointed out by Zeller and Meyer (2002), the use of microfinance for poverty alleviation is not backed up with sound facts derived from rigorous research. Using survey data of around 2000 observations collected in the six countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, this study provides evidence of positive impact of microfinance on production activities of micro business and on living conditions of low income families.

This paper addresses the scholarly debate on cultural homogeneity or heterogeneity of urban poor families. While authors such as Lewis (1959) or Wacquant (2000 ; 2001) claim that structural disadvantages are linked to a particular type of identity or culture, others such as Hannerz (1969) , Anderson (1999 ; 2002) , or Portes ( Portes and Manning, 1986 ; Portes and Jensen, 1989 ) believe that it is possible to find different behaviors, expectations, decision–making processes, and outcomes among people living in seemingly identical structural conditions ( Small et al., 2010 ). Using Santiago, Chile, as a case study, we differentiate five different cultures or identities among the poor. Those identities seem to be the product of different historical and political circumstances, as well as of different types of public policies. The paper ends with a discussion of the need for poverty reduction policies to consider these differences among the poor.

The main challenge in extracting geothermal energy is to overcome issues relating to geothermal reservoirs such as the formation damage and formation fracturing. The objective of this study is to develop an integrated framework that considers the geochemical and geomechanics aspects of a reservoir and characterizes various formation damages such as impairment of formation porosity and permeability, hydraulic fracturing, lowering of formation breakdown pressure, and the associated heat recovery. In this research study, various shallow, deep and high temperature geothermal reservoirs with different formation water compositions were simulated to predict the severity/challenges during water injection in hot geothermal reservoirs. The developed model solves various geochemical reactions and processes that take place during water injection in geothermal reservoirs. The results obtained were then used to investigate the geomechanics aspect of cold-water injection. Our findings presented that the formation temperature, injected water temperature, the concentration of sulfate in the injected water, and its dilution have a noticeable impact on rock dissolution and precipitation. In addition, anhydrite precipitation has a controlling effect on permeability impairment in the investigated case study. It was observed that the dilution of water could decrease formation of scale while the injection of sulfate rich water could intensify scale precipitation. Thus, the reservoir permeability could decrease to a critical level, where the production of hot water reduces and the generation of geothermal energy no longer remains economical. It evident that injection of incompatible water would decrease the formation porosity. Thus, the geomechanics investigation was performed to determine the effect of porosity decrease. It was found that for the 50% porosity reduction case, the initial formation breakdown pressure reduced from 2588 psi to 2586 psi, and for the 75% porosity reduction case it decreased to 2584 psi. Thus, geochemical based formation damage is significant but geomechanics based formation fracturing is insignificant in the selected case study. We propose that water composition should be designed to minimize damage and that high water injection pressures in shallow reservoirs should be avoided.

(Implementation of The National Program for Marine and Fisheries Community Empowerment in The Fisheries Processing Business : A Case Study in Banda Aceh City)Fish business development in the village level is considered as the natural program for marine and fisheries community empowerment. Poverty reduction programs through marine and fisheries community empowerment are does not effective and take into account the sustainability of the program so that poverty can not be reduced even increasing. National program of marine and fisheries in the fish processing business are considered one of the MMAF program intended to eliminate poverty in a certain society. The aims of this study was to analyze implementation of PUMP P2HP, particularly in Banda Aceh City, identify the public response to the PUMP P2HP, and identify factors that affect the implementation of the program. This research used a qualitative approach and data collection through interview, observation and desk study. Sample was determined using purposive sampling with respondents “kelompok pengolah dan pemasar” (POKLAHSAR) members participating in the program. The method of data analysis was carried out descriptively. Results show that the implementation of PUMP P2HP in each stage have indeed been implemented as in the guidelines on the implementation of programs in the community. However, in terms of its implementation as a policy of empowerment, it is still far from the expected goals. This is supported by an analysis of the public response to the implementation of the program, in relation to the sustainability of program, the participation in program, the benefits of program, and conflict occurred during implementation of the program. The dominant factors that can support and prevent the implementation of the program as a whole, that the implementation procedures should be be changed and improved. Inhibitory and supporting factor for success of the program were namely the suitability of the location, provision of equipment to support the production, and the accuracy of the prospective beneficiaries. Policy recommendations to improve implementation of the programs of direct cash assistance (BLT) in the future were identified as follows: (1) simplification of the program process, (2) accuracy in selecting candidates (3) training and assistance to the recipients and beneficiaries, and (4) evaluation of the programs for business development and self-reliance of beneficiaries sustainable manner.

Waqf is a potential source of funds to overcome social problems, but most poverty reduction programmes rely on foreign credit, especially from the World Bank. In this case, the development of a waqf by a nadzir can be an alternative source of funding in the general economic empowerment, which is supported by societys trust in waqf institutions. Therefore, this study is conducted to identify the factors that determine public trust and to examine the influence of waqf distribution and promotion on society trust in waqf funds managed by Tabung Wakaf Indonesia. This paper used quantitative methods and utilized primary data through direct surveys with questionnaires were collected and analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The findings reveal that promotion and distribution have significant relationships with society trust. In addition, this study indicates that distribution has the greater impact than promotion on influencing society trust in waqf management. The findings nevertheless give a wide understanding of the concept of public trust and its antecedent in the context of Tabung Wakaf Indonesia.

This paper focuses on examining the role of religion in improving the work ethic of fishing communities in Takalar Regency. The approach used in this research is the Socio-theological Approach (Social monotheism). The social theological approach is a method or method used to link the sociological level of religious or divine society in order to analyze and reveal data on the reality under study. The data acquisition technique is to use data collection methods in the form of observation, interviews and documentation. The results of this study indicate that religion (Islam) plays a role in building work ethic. Poverty can make a person disbelieve in his Lord. Islam teaches its adherents to share with those who are entitled in terms of the theological concept of zakat as poverty alleviation and as a means of realizing social welfare. Islam does not close the space for its adherents to achieve economic prosperity. The framework of monotheism in Islamic teachings has outlined social involvement for its followers to always care and help others.
