Obstructions for learners in the use of ICT in KSA institutions

The advancement of digital technology has a great influence on the development of many areas of modern life. Over recent years, e-learning systems have managed to gain a competitive edge over the more traditional methods of learning. The learning and teaching techniques employed by e-learning systems allow more flexibility and provide freedom from the restrictions of time, location, physical presence and other aspects of traditional learning. Nevertheless, e-learning does have its own drawbacks, and research into the barriers to learning will assist in overcoming some of the problems associated with e-learning success. This study attempts to determine the obstacles that can influence the success of ICT within institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This qualitative research examined the obstacles of the use of ICT in the education process from learner’s perspectives and the potential solutions that can help to reduce these obstacles. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven e-learning students from one Saudi University. Purposive sample techniques were used with participants, and the results revealed that there were many barriers that hindered learners from benefitting from the use of ICT in education. These obstacles included lack of technical support, technical issues, lack of English language, lack of design e-course materials, and lack of motivation. In addition, a number of solutions were considered in this study.

Abstract Objective The existing provision of ENT teaching in the undergraduate curriculum is deemed inadequate by medical students, general practitioners and ENT surgeons alike. This study aims to explore the perceptions of a variety of stakeholders on how undergraduate ENT provision can be optimised. Methods This study involved semi-structured interviews with seven participants (two medical students, two general practitioners, two ENT surgeons and a curriculum developer). Inductive thematic analysis was used to identify key themes that emerged from the interviews. Results The four emergent themes were evaluation of current ENT provision, barriers to learning and teaching, alternate means of delivery of ENT education, and professional identity development. A number of barriers to learning and teaching in the clinical environment were identified including student-related, teacher-related and environmental factors. Conclusion The existing ENT provision should be re-considered to help students achieve a basic level of competence in managing common ENT conditions. This can be achieved by ENT teaching in additional contexts including general practice, e-learning and simulation workshops.

The use of e-learning suggests the use of ICT to enhance the quality of learning and teaching. However, many higher education institutions, does not have e-learning platforms, resources and infrastructure necessary to implement this type of training. This is due to the need for high cost of basic infrastructure and applications challenges related projects it has to face. This article puts forward an overview on what is the current state of the use of cloud computing in e-learning in higher education context, where the use of computers is increasingly intensive. The article analyzes e-learning systems challenges and trends, the convenience of cloud computing for e-learning and the key benefits of e-learning on the cloud. The article exposes also some application solutions using cloud computing in e-learning for higher education, by presenting the most common architecture that has been adopted. Finally, this article discusses issues related to the implementation of cloud-based e-learning systems and presents some potential ways to overcome them.

Task-based language teaching on the purpose of enhancing students’ communicative skills and involving them actively in the authentic context has long been highlighted in recent years in tertiary English language teaching. This paper proposes a framework of task-based teaching approach and language assessment in intensive reading class based on the researcher’s own teaching practice to explore positive impacts on students’ competences. This is done in the context of both oral presentation and written reports of first undergraduate English major students. The research method consists of semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire with 18 questions pointing to different aspects in the learning and teaching processes, aiming to explore what impacts it has on students’ competence in both second language acquisition and at cognitive level. In this empirical study, all the findings indicate that TBLT applied in Chinese English teaching class is very effective and beneficial for the enhancement of Chinese English learners.

E-learning is used by higher education institutions and corporate training institutes as a means of solving performance problems, and the accessibility to educational technology which considered as vital for acquisition and dissemination of knowledge to students, as well as interaction between instructors and students. To determine technological solutions for those institutions, an analysis to the literature, and related theories have been conducted depending on the context impact to e-learning system, as well as the interrelationship between e-learning system components and its impact on learner performance. The main findings show that e-learning system is composed of four components, mainly; the instructor, learner, course, and information and communication technologies (ICT), in addition to the context determinants of e-learning system success. The current study, proposed a model for e-learning success, which incorporates eight factors, mainly; e-learning context that include individual, institutional, and environmental determinants to e-learning success. In addition to e-learning components which include instructor, learner, course, and ICT. As well as the learner performance, that aims to measure e-learning success. The proposed model was designed to integrate prior research in the area of e-learning, where it adds set of determinants to e-learning systems success, and find out the best fit of e-learning system components. Moreover, educational institutions can use this proposed model.

The introduction of innovative e-learning and teaching methods at universities of technologies necessitates the examining of students’ perceptions of these methods in the promotion of student success. In South Africa, the majority of first-year students are not exposed to technology-aided learning methodology during their high school career, especially those from disadvantaged demographics. The purpose of the study is to examine student perceptions regarding their experience of e-learning at a South African university of technology with specific reference to the success of first-year students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Using qualitative research methods through semi-structured interviews, the researchers discovered that first-year students from disadvantaged backgrounds are experiencing challenges in terms of access to resources such as computers, laptops and reliable internet connection. Furthermore, inadequate training on the use of online resources and unsatisfactory performance during online assessment were discovered and these are heightened by the Covid-19 pandemic. First-year students from disadvantaged backgrounds are exposed to a variety of barriers that have an adverse impact on their success. The study recommends that higher education institutes provide the necessary resources to facilitate seamless assimilation of first-year students into the new environment.

It is possible to classify students according to the manner they recognize, process, and store information. This classification should be considered when developing adaptive e-learning systems. It also creates a comprehension of the different styles students demonstrate while in the process of learning, which can help adaptive e-learning systems offer advice and instructions to students, teachers, administrators, and parents in order to optimize students’ learning processes. Moreover, e-learning systems using computational and statistical algorithms to analyze students’ learning may offer the opportunity to complement traditional learning evaluation methods with new ones based on analytical intelligence. In this work, we propose a method based on deep multi-target prediction algorithm using Felder–Silverman learning styles model to improve students’ learning evaluation using feature selection, learning styles models, and multiple target classification. As a result, we present a set of features and a model based on an artificial neural network to investigate the possibility of improving the accuracy of automatic learning styles identification. The obtained results show that learning styles allow adaptive e-learning systems to improve the learning processes of students.

This chapter describes original modalities of combining traditional methods and technologies in medical learning with good results. The electronic tool is TESYS, a non-commercial e-learning platform designed for completing and improving traditional medical learning by using new methods. Traditional learning is thus blended together with e-learning, offering the students and teachers the possibility to permanently evaluate the learning and teaching process. Besides the usual functions of an e-learning platform, TESYS includes elements of originality. The first one is a database with medical images collected during the process of diagnosing patients, which also include other useful information (diagnostic, treatment, evolution) in order to complete the currently limited number of images found in university courses and medical books. The second element of originality is the content-based visual query module designed for this multimedia medical database, which uses features that are automatically extracted from images (color, texture, regions). The content-based visual query used both in the e-learning and e-testing process stimulates learning by comparing similar cases along with their particularities, or by comparing cases that are visually similar but with different diagnosis.

E-learning involves adopting and exploiting the potential of new, advanced Information Technology in development and delivery of education. In spite of a rapid growth in the e-learning field there still exists a range of issues facing the stakeholders of e-learning systems. One of the key issues is how to measure e-learning system success. Although considerable attention has been paid to the Information Systems success issue, there remain arguments about the factors which are most effective for measuring Information System success. The issue of measuring Information System success has an impact on evaluating e-learning systems success. This chapter aims to fill this void by proposing an evaluation methodology model to assess e-learning systems success. The contribution of this study is the proposed model to evaluate the success of e-learning systems. The model is based on a thorough review of the e-learning success literature and existing Information Systems success models.
