Amil is the backbone of zakat activities which, in general, play a role in collecting and distributing zakat. However, some incidents of mismanagement involve amil raise concerns about the quality and role of amil. The question arises on the effectiveness of the amil and what should be done to minimize the case of mismanagement among amil. There should be some criteria that need to be met in the appointment of amil so that the appointed amil can fulfill the vision of the zakat institution. This study suggested five main criteria in determining effective amil, namely background of amil, appointment and replacement process, disciplinary action, expectations and targets: and reward. This paper contributes to the practice of forming good amil governance and can be used as a guide to amil and zakat institutions so that the objectives of zakat can be achieved.

This study was designed to examine how distance piano teaching might affect the verbal behaviours and physical actions of a teacher, a student and a parent. Weekly 30-minute piano lessons over a year-long period were taught to a 5-and-a-half-year-old on-site student and a 6-year-old distance student. All lessons were delivered by the same teacher who followed the Suzuki programme. All sessions were recorded and then analysed using Simple Computer Recording Interface Behaviour Evaluation (SCRIBE), a video analysis software that provides frequencies and durations of pre-coded events. The observation of recorded lessons showed that distance teaching did not slow down student progress. In addition, behavioural analysis revealed that in most aspects, distance and on-site delivery were remarkably similar. The most striking difference was the interaction between the teacher and the parent. During on-site teaching, most of the teacher’s instructions were directed to the student while the parent was listening and observing attentively; during distance teaching, half of the teacher’s instructions were addressed to the student and the other half to the parent. The distance student also tended to relate more to the parent than to the teacher. In the distance environment, when interacting with a young beginner student, the role of the parent becomes very central to the success of the lessons.

Lithium inhibits IMPase (inositol monophosphatase) activity, as well as inositol transporter function. To determine whether one or more of these mechanisms might underlie lithium's behavioural effects, we studied Impa1 (encoding IMPase) and Smit1 (sodium–myo-inositol transporter 1)-knockout mice. In brains of adult homozygous Impa1-knockout mice, IMPase activity was found to be decreased; however, inositol levels were not found to be altered. Behavioural analysis indicated decreased immobility in the forced-swim test as well as a strongly increased sensitivity to pilocarpine-induced seizures. These are behaviours robustly induced by lithium. In homozygous Smit1-knockout mice, free inositol levels were decreased in the frontal cortex and hippocampus. These animals behave like lithium-treated animals in the model of pilocarpine seizures and in the Porsolt forced-swim test model of depression. In contrast with O'Brien et al. [O'Brien, Harper, Jove, Woodgett, Maretto, Piccolo and Klein (2004) J. Neurosci. 24, 6791–6798], we could not confirm that heterozygous Gsk3b (glycogen synthase kinase 3β)-knockout mice exhibit decreased immobility in the Porsolt forced-swim test or decreased amphetamine-induced hyperactivity in a manner mimicking lithium's behavioural effects. These data support the role of inositol-related processes rather than GSK3β in the mechanism of the therapeutic action of lithium.

AbstractIn everyday life, people sometimes find themselves making decisions on behalf of others, taking risks on another’s behalf, accepting the responsibility for these choices and possibly suffering regret for what they could have done differently. Previous research has extensively studied how people deal with risk when making decisions for others or when being observed by others. Here, we asked whether making decisions for present others is affected by regret avoidance. We studied value-based decision making under uncertainty, manipulating both whether decisions benefited the participant or a partner (beneficiary effect) and whether the partner watched the participant’s choices (audience effect) and their factual and counterfactual outcomes. Computational behavioural analysis revealed that participants were less mindful of regret (and more strongly driven by bigger risks) when choosing for others vs for themselves. Conversely, they chose more conservatively (regarding both regret and risk) when being watched vs alone. The effects of beneficiary and audience on anticipated regret counteracted each other, suggesting that participants’ financial and reputational interests impacted the feeling of regret independently.

While communication is changing all around us, psychological practice has not fundamentally adapted for more than a hundred years. Psychologists deliver services by talking to people in an office environment or out in the field. However, with the arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace, psychological service delivery is set to change dramatically. The focus here is to explore and review the role of technology in psychological interventions, in particular for adults. This paper introduces the current definition of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the main psychological intervention: Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA). This is followed by a review of current technology to support ABA and to enhance psychological practice.

In this research project I use a narrative methodology to explore the experiences of four autistic adults who have undergone applied behaviour analysis. By drawing upon the work of the neurodiversity movement and implementing a critical disability theoretical framework, I have sought to present the experiences and perspectives of participants as well as provide an analysis of the role of ableism in the systems in which they participated. Through positioning the lived experiences of this study’s participants as a credible and trustworthy source of knowledge, I have called into question the ethicality of applied behaviour analysis techniques and implementation by problematizing the way in which it positions autistic traits as deviant and limits the self-determination and autonomy of its subjects. I have subsequently provided recommendations and points for reflection to the field that may serve to decrease the harms described by the participants of this study.
