In this research, a novel polysaccharide-based bionanocomposite film was prepared via dispersion casting method. Nano-silicon dioxide (SiO2-N) was incorporated into soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) at different concentrations (i.e., 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% w/w dried SSPS). Mechanical (tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young’s modulus), physical (moisture content, water solubility, and moisture uptake), and barrier properties of bionanocomposite films were evaluated. Incorporation of 5% SiO2-N to SSPS matrix decreased water vapor permeability (WVP) from 7.96×10−11 to 4.75×10−11 g m−1 s−1 Pa−1 and oxygen permeability from 215 to 96 cm3 µm m−2 day−1 atm−1. Heat seal strength and mechanical properties of SSPS films were improved. Moisture sorption isotherm of SSPS films supported by SiO2-N was shifted to lower moisture content, and monolayer moisture content of the films decreased significantly (p<0.05). In summary, SiO2-N is a potential filler in SSPS-based films for packaging materials.

The study was carried out for the purpose of determining the drying kinetics as well as moisture sorption isotherm of hybrid-81 corn. Corn at about 31% moisture content (wb) was dried in a forced convective hot air cabinet dryer at different drying conditions, such as variable air dry bulb temperature (40°C, 50°C and 60°C) and loading density (3.56 kg/m2, 7.12 kg/m2, and 10.68 kg/m2) as well as in shining sun at different layers (3.56 kg/m2, 7.12 kg/m2, and 10.68 kg/m2). The water sorption isotherm of the dried corn was developed using vacuum desiccators, which contained saturated salt solutions in the range of 11-93% RHs. The mono-layer moisture content calculated by the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) model (6.76 g/100 g solid) was lesser than that calculated by the Guggenheim–Anderson–De Boer (GAB) model (10.53 g/100 g solid). The energy constants were 10.45 and 4.64 as per BET and GAB equation, respectively. Both models gave suitable fits for corn. The activation energy (Ea) for diffusion of water was found to be 11.09 kcal/gm-mole for corn. Furthermore, it was noticed that, with the increase of corn layer, the drying rate decreased in case of both sun and mechanical drying. However, higher loading density resulted in efficient drying, at least up to 10.7 kg/m2. It was shown that the drying time to obtain stability was the lowest for moisture content (12.08 %) corresponding to aw of 0.65 in case of BET or GAB monolayer moisture content. This finding could be helpful in predicting the storage life of corn.J. Bangladesh Agril. Univ. 15(2): 309-317, December 2017

The water sorption characteristics of dehydrated onion and onion solutes composite by vacuum drying (VD) and air drying (AD) were developed at room temperature using vacuum desiccators containing saturated salt solutions at various relative humidity levels (11-93%). From moisture sorption isotherm data, the monolayer moisture content was estimated by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) equation using data up to a water activity of 0.52 and 0.93 respectively. Results showed that in case of non treated samples the monolayer moisture content values (Wo) of BET gave slightly higher values than GAB (9.7 vs 8.2) for VD, while GAB gave higher value than BET (11.0 vs 9.8) for AD. It is also seen that the treated and non treated onion slice and onion powder absorbed approximately the same amount of water at water activities below about 0.44 and above 0.44 the treated samples begin to absorb more water than the non treated samples. It was observed that 10-20% added of sugar gave no change in water sorption capacity while the amount of sorbed water increases with increasing amount added salt for mix onion product.Bangladesh J. In this study, barnyard millet starch (BMS) was used to prepare edible films. Antioxidant activity was conferred to the BMS film by incorporating borage seed oil (BO). The physical, optical, and thermal properties as well as antioxidant activities of the films were evaluated. The incorporation of BO into the BMS films decreased the tensile strength from 9.46 to 4.69 MPa and increased the elongation at break of the films from 82.49% to 103.87%. Water vapor permeability, water solubility, and moisture content of the BMS films decreased with increasing BO concentration, whereas Hunter b value and opacity increased, L and a values of the films decreased. The BMS films containing BO exhibited antioxidant activity that increased proportionally with increased BO concentration. In particular, the BMS film with 1.0% BO exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and light barrier properties among the BMS films. Therefore, the BMS films with added BO can be used as an antioxidant packaging material.

The moisture sorption behavior of pectin films formulated with different sorbitol content was evaluated and films with different equilibrium moisture contents were obtained. Different models were used to describe the moisture sorption isotherms (MSI) of pectin films, sorbitol and pectin powder. Based on changes observed in MSI, sorbitol was found to strongly interact with pectin polymers. Incorporation of sorbitol in pectin films resulted in lower equilibrium moisture contents at low to intermediate water activities (aw), but much higher moisture contents at aw > 0.53. Estimates of monolayer moisture values (1.53 – 3.81 g H2O kg-1 solids) were obtained by the application of Guggenheim-Anderson-DeBoer (GAB) model. A differential mechanical analyzer (DMA) was used for mechanical properties of formulated films while a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used for thermal properties and glass transition temperature (Tg). With both DMA and DSC tests, the strong plasticizing action of water and sorbitol was evident. Tg vs. moisture content data were successfully fitted to the Fox empirical model. Multi-frequency DMA measurements provided estimates for the apparent activation energy (Ea) of the second glass transition in the range of 131-184 kJ/mol; the values for Ea decreased with increasing sorbitol concentration. Water vapor permeability (WVP) and mechanical properties of the films were also analyzed under varying sorbitol and moisture contents. Increasing moisture or addition of sorbitol to pectin films increased the elongation at break, but decreased the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and Tg, and increased WVP of the films.

The present work aimed to: i) find the suitable proportion, based on sensory evaluation, of microwave-convective hot air dried jamun (Syzygium cumini L.) pulp and seed kernel powder to be mixed for the preparation of jamun powder (JP); ii) generate and model the moisture sorption isotherm (MSI) of JP; and iii) estimate net isosteric heat of sorption (qst), spreading pressure (φ), net integral enthalpy (Qin), and net integral entropy (Sin). To formulate JP, the proportion (w/w, db) comprising 2% kernel and 98% pulp powder was the most desirable. The Peleg model was the best fit to MSI of JP. The qst decreased following linear relationship from 11.02 kJ. mol-1 at 5% equilibrium moisture content (EMC) to 0.27 kJ. mol-1 at 30% EMC. The φ increased with increase in water activity and decreased with increase in temperature from 25 ºC to 35 ºC, and the values of φ at 45 ºC were even higher than at 25 ºC. Net integral enthalpy (Qin) initially decreased till 6% moisture content in JP and displayed an increasing trend with further increase in moisture content. On the contrary, Sin, kept on decreasing continually with increasing moisture content. The moisture zone of 7-11% was considered safe for storage for storage of JP within the temperature range of 45-25 ºC.

In the present study, starch/powdered activated carbon composite films were prepared by incorporating various amounts of powdered activated carbon (PAC)—1–5, 10, and 15 %—into a starch matrix, using the solvent casting method. The effect of PAC addition on the biopolymer film was investigated. The mechanical properties were examined by ultra-nanoindentation, nanoscratch, and micro-tensile tests. Since the mechanical properties of biopolymer films are correlated with their structure, the effect of PAC addition was tested using X-ray diffraction. The surface parameters morphology and wettability were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle measurements. The barrier properties were examined by determining water vapor permeability and the water solubility index. The obtained results did not show a monotonic dependence of the mechanical parameters on PAC content, with the exception of the maximum strain, which decreased as the amount of the additive increased. The visible effect of PAC addition was manifested in changes in the adhesive force value and in water vapor permeability (WVP). The barrier properties decreased with the increase of the filler content.

This study aims to develop hydration properties of P/AG films by using ZnO nanoparticles. Pectin/ alginate/ ZnO nanoparticles (P/AG/ZnO-NPs) films are fabricated at various ZnO-NPs contents (0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 g/100g solution). The addition of ZnO-NPs at content 0.1 g/100g solution in the film decreases swelling degree (SD) from 327.98% to 110.12% and water vapor permeability (WVP) from 0.873 g.mm/m2.day.kPa to 0.358 g.mm/m2.day.kPa. Moisture sorption isotherm shows that P/AG/ZnO-NPs films should be used at lower than 86% RH. The Peleg model is the best model for predicting the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of P/AG/ZnO-NPs films. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs of surface and cross section morphology of P/AG and P/AG with 0.1% ZnO-NPs films have indicated that there are interactions between ZnO-NPs and pectin-alginate matrix. Results have suggested that it would be favorable to prepare P/AG/ZnO-NPs film by using ZnO-NPs at the amount of 0.1 g/100g solution for food preservation.

The drying (or dewatering) of fresh feces and fecal sludge is a productive step in the management of sanitation, waste treatment, and resource recovery services. An improved understanding of fresh feces and fecal sludge drying would contribute to the development and deployment of fecal sludge management services. However, there is a lack of available literature on the fundamental drying characteristics of fresh feces. In response to this gap, this work shares experimental results for equilibrium moisture content of fresh feces at different water activity levels (aw) and proposes the use of the Guggenheim, Anderson, and de Boer (GAB) model for predicting aw, calculating the heat of sorption, and estimating the corresponding energy requirements for drying of fresh feces. This is the first time this work has been done with fresh feces. The total heat of evaporation was significant up to a moisture content of about 0.2 kg water per kg dry solids. In addition to informing drying process design, the sorption isotherm can be used to predict microbial activity, which could improve the management of feces and fecal sludge from a public health perspective. These data in turn will be used to promote access to dignified, safe, and sustainable sanitation.
