The extraction of valuable phytochemicals from natural sources is an important and constantly evolving research area. Zingiber officinale Roscoe (ginger) contains high amounts of bioactive phytochemicals, which are desirable due to their significant properties. In this work, the ability of different natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDESs) to serve as green solvents for the preparation of high added value extracts from ginger is explored, in combination with ultrasound assisted extraction. The method was optimized by applying a response surface methodology using the NaDES Bet/La/W (1:2:2.5). Three independent variables, namely the extraction time, ultrasound power and NaDES-to-dry-ginger ratio, were investigated by employing a 17-run three-level Box–Behnken Design (BBD) in order to study the correlation between the extraction conditions and the quality of the obtained extracts. The optimum conditions (in order to achieve simultaneously maximum total phenolic content and antioxidant activity), were found to be 23.8 min extraction time, 60 Watt and NaDES/ginger 25:1 w/w. In the optimum conditions the DPPH radical scavenging ability of the extracts was found to reach IC50 = 18.16 mg/mL after 120 min, whereas the TPC was 20.10 ± 0.26 mg GAE/g of dry ginger. The green methodology was also compared with the extraction using conventional solvents. All the obtained extracts were evaluated for their antioxidant activity and their total phenolic content, while the extract derived by the optimum extraction conditions was further investigated for its ability to bind to calf thymus DNA (ctDNA).

Indonesia traditional beverages such as minuman jahe, kunyit asam, beras kencur, and minuman temulawak are usually made with the addition of spices. They can be served in the form of  liquid or powder. This research was aimed to study the effect of  the beverage type, addition of spices, and the form of product on their antioxidant activity. The type of sugar used in this study was palm sugar juice. Total phenolic contents were measured to  indicate the level of antioxidants. Measurement of antioxidant  activity was conducted by analyzing malonaldehyde from linoleic  acid and capturing capacity of DPPH radical. The results showed  that Indonesian traditional beverage could inhibit the oxidation of linoleic acid and capture free radicals. Free radical capturing  capacity of curcuma beverage greater than other beverages, but  the malonaldehyde (MDA) inhibitor effect was not different. Total phenolic content of curcuma tended to be higher than the other traditional beverages. The addition of spices could raise the level  of total phenolic content in beverages and increase free radical  trapping capacity. Drying the beverages into powder could reduce the levels of total phenolic content and but did not reduce the  antioxidant activity. ABSTRAKMinuman tradisional Indonesia seperti minuman jahe, kunyit  asam, beras kencur, dan minuman temulawak biasanya dibuat  dengan tambahan berbagai rempah. Minuman tersebut dapat  disajikan dalam bentuk cair maupun serbuk. Penelitian ini  bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh jenis minuman,  penambahan rempah tambahan, dan bentuk minuman terhadap aktivitas antioksidan minuman. Jenis gula yang ditambahkan  adalah gula nira. Jenis antioksidan yang diuji adalah total fenolik. Pengukuran aktivitas antioksidan dilakukan dengan uji  penghambatan malonaldehid dan kapasitas penangkapan radikal  DPPH. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa minuman  tradisional Indonesia dapat menghambat oksidasi asam linoleat dan menangkap radikal bebas. Kapasitas penangkapan radikal  bebas oleh minuman temulawak lebih besar dibandingkan  minuman yang lain tetapi kemampuan penghambatan  malonaldehid (MDA) oleh minumaan tradisional tidak berbeda.  Total fenolik minuman temulawak cenderung lebih besar  dibandingkan minuman tradisional yang lain. Penambahan  rempah-rempah dapat meningkatkan kadar total fenolik  minuman dan meningkatkan kapasitas penangkapan radikal  bebas. Pembuatan minuman serbuk pada penelitian ini dapat  menurunkan kadar total fenolik tetapi tidak menurunkan aktivitas antioksidan.

A limited number of mosses have ever been studied in regard to antioxidant activity; with only few belonging to the European species. As part of our on-going screening of bryophytes as natural antioxidant resources, a relevant biological activity investigation was conducted on the three moss species, namely Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) Schimp. (Brachytheciaceae), Calliergonella cuspidata (Hedw.) Loeske (Hypnaceae) and Hypnum mammillatum (Brid.) Loeske (Hypnaceae), collected in Germany. The antioxidant activity of corresponding lyophilised aqueous extracts (teas) was evaluated on the basis of their ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)] cation scavenging activities. The total phenolic contents were determined as well. This study led to the detection of a moderate total phenolic content of the moss B. rutabulum, indicating for the first time its potential in searching for novel antioxidant agents.

Antioxidant fractions from Ophioglossum thermale were extracted with five different polar solvents using a Soxhlet type extractor. The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The ethyl acetate fraction of O. thermale was found to contain maximum phenolics. The dried fractions were screened for their antioxidant activity potential using in vitro model systems such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) and lipid-peroxidation reduction at different concentrations. Results revealed that the EtOAc fraction exhibited the best performance in the DPPH assay, NBT assay and lipid peroxidation. All fractions showed more potent antioxidant capacity than green tea extract, a well-known antioxidant. Furthermore, the EtOAc fraction has the highest total phenolic content (475.65 mg of EGCG/g). In addition, the EtOAc fraction at 0.005% and 0.01% (g/100 ml) also significantly inhibited UVB irradiation-induced ROS generation in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). In a carrageenan-induced edema model, the EtOAc fraction showed an inhibitory effect (21.5%, p < 0.05) at 200 mg/kg (p.o.) after 300 min administration. Consequently, 3-O-methylquercetin (3MQ) was also isolated from the antioxidative EtOAc fraction. The data obtained using the above in vitro and in vivo tests suggest that the antioxidant activity of O. thermale and its anti-inflammatory effect on carrageenan-induced acute inflammation can be attributed to its ameliorating effect on oxidative damage, and thus it has great potential as a source for natural health products. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the antioxidant activity of different polar extracts from O. thermale.

Aim: The current study was undertaken to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and to assess the antioxidant activity of two different extracts (flour and oil) of two Algerian Quercus species, Quercus ilex L. and Quercus suber L. Methods and Material: The oil extraction of the two species was achieved using the Soxhlet method. The obtained extracts were estimated for the chemical and physical constants (acidity, peroxide value, iodine value, and ultraviolet absorption indices). Total phenolic content was measured by spectrophotometry according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure and calculated as gallic acid equivalents (GAE). The studied extracts were submitted to an estimation of their flavonoid contents too, using aluminum chloride methods. Antioxidant ability was assessed by means of two distinct methods (DPPH• and ABTS•+). Results: The obtained results revealed that antioxidant properties, total phenolic, and total flavonoid contents differed significantly among selected species and extracts. The flour samples possessed the highest level of total phenolic contents (1101–1464 mg GAE/kg dry weight) and exhibited the highest antioxidant capacities with average values of 52.62–40.78 μmol TE g−1 dry weight and 36.19–44.50 μmol TE g−1 dry weight for DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively. Acorn oil extracts showed also remarkable antioxidant activity, up to 2.69 and 3.23 μmol TE g−1 oil (DPPH and ABTS test, respectively), even though the total phenolic contents were low (195.64–322.06 mg GAE /kg of oil). Total phenolic amounts were positively correlated with the antioxidant properties of Quercus flour and oil. Conclusions: Our study provides basic information on the presence of bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity in acorn fruits, in order to consider their extracts as functional food ingredients and potential source of natural antioxidants. <strong><em>Flavanoid, steroid, and terpenoid contents of 20 Manokwari medicinal plants were analyzed.  The antioxidant activity, total phenolic contents and antitumor activity of 20 Manokwari medicinal plants were also evaluated. The result shows that 83% positif to flavanoid test, 59% positif to terpenoid test and only 25% positif steroid. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents evaluated using Ferric Thiocianate (FTC) and Folin-Ciocalteu methods respectively. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents of medicinal plants were extracted by the traditional method, boiling in water and also in 80% methanol. Twenty plants evaluated in both exstracts have significantly varies of antioxidant activities and phenolic contents,  A significant and linier correlation coefficient between the antioxidant activity and the total phenolic content was found in both aqueous (R<sup>2</sup>= 0,77) and methanol (R<sup>2</sup> = 0,85). Antitumor activity was tested using cell maurine P-388 and only 2 of medicinal plants are active to inhibit cell maurine P-388. Comparing extraction efficiency of the two methods, the methanol extracted phenolic compounds more efficiently, and antioxidant activity of the extract was higher.</em></strong>
