A limited number of mosses have ever been studied in regard to antioxidant activity; with only few belonging to the European species. As part of our on-going screening of bryophytes as natural antioxidant resources, a relevant biological activity investigation was conducted on the three moss species, namely Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) Schimp. (Brachytheciaceae), Calliergonella cuspidata (Hedw.) Loeske (Hypnaceae) and Hypnum mammillatum (Brid.) Loeske (Hypnaceae), collected in Germany. The antioxidant activity of corresponding lyophilised aqueous extracts (teas) was evaluated on the basis of their ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)] cation scavenging activities. The total phenolic contents were determined as well. This study led to the detection of a moderate total phenolic content of the moss B. rutabulum, indicating for the first time its potential in searching for novel antioxidant agents.

Indonesia traditional beverages such as minuman jahe, kunyit asam, beras kencur, and minuman temulawak are usually made with the addition of spices. They can be served in the form of  liquid or powder. This research was aimed to study the effect of  the beverage type, addition of spices, and the form of product on their antioxidant activity. The type of sugar used in this study was palm sugar juice. Total phenolic contents were measured to  indicate the level of antioxidants. Measurement of antioxidant  activity was conducted by analyzing malonaldehyde from linoleic  acid and capturing capacity of DPPH radical. The results showed  that Indonesian traditional beverage could inhibit the oxidation of linoleic acid and capture free radicals. Free radical capturing  capacity of curcuma beverage greater than other beverages, but  the malonaldehyde (MDA) inhibitor effect was not different. Total phenolic content of curcuma tended to be higher than the other traditional beverages. The addition of spices could raise the level  of total phenolic content in beverages and increase free radical  trapping capacity. Drying the beverages into powder could reduce the levels of total phenolic content and but did not reduce the  antioxidant activity.

Dried Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms stored in polythene and polypropylene packs were exposed to gamma radiation from a cobalt-60 source at doses of 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 kGy at a dose rate of 1.7 kGy/hr and stored for a period of 1 month. Total phenolic contents, flavonoids, and free radical scavenging activity DPPH (2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) were determined using aqueous, ethanol, and methanol extracts by Folin-Ciocaultaeu method as a source of potential natural antioxidants. Total phenol content ranged 0.56 ± 0.01–10.96 ± 1.7 mg/GAE, flavonoids ranged 1.64 ± 0.05–8.92 ± 0.6 mg/QE, DPPH radical scavenging activity also ranged 7.02 ± 0.10–13.03 ± 0.04%, and IC50 values also ranged 0.08–0.16 mg/mL. Statistical differences (P < 0.05) were recorded for the extracts and the treatment doses of mushrooms stored in polythene and polypropylene packs. A significant linear correlation was confirmed between values for the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of mushroom extracts. The high contents of phenolic compounds indicated that these compounds contribute to high antioxidant activity. Pleurotus ostreatus can be regarded as a promising candidate for natural mushroom sources of antioxidants with high value. The use of low dose gamma radiation by the local food industry could improve the hygienic quality, extend shelf-life, and preserve nutrients and antinutrients.

AbstractObjective: Mint (Mentha spp.) genotypes used as spices are cultivated in Turkey and used for different purposes including herbal tea, spices, the cosmetics industry, and are used in folk medicine. While mint species have been used in traditional practices during humanity’s long history, there is limited research on the comparison of their antioxidant capacity and phenolic contents. This aim of the research is to compare antioxidant capacity and phenolic contents in mint clones to determine superior genotypes for herbal and spice usage and cultivation. Methods: Antioxidant capacity was evaluated by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). Total phenolic content in clones were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method. Results: Maximum total phenolic content [28.27±3.95 μg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight (DW)] and FRAP activity 577.09±46.02 μmol Trolox equiv/g DW were obtained from Clone 13 (M. spicata), while M. piperita clones were higher for TEAC activity (800.02±1.10 μmol Trolox equiv/g DW). The results were first records for M. villoso nervata. FRAP and TEAC activities selected clones were correlated with total phenolic content (r=0.77; 0.73 respectively). Conclusion: According to the results, it can be suggested that Clone 13, Clone 5, (M. spicata) Clone 3 and Clone 8 (M. piperita) are more suitable for use as spice, herbal tea, and antioxidant agents. The clones must be selected for commercial cultivation by the grower and they can be used as spices and herbal teas.

Abstract Dried slightly sticky mango sheets is healthy sweet snack, having slightly chewy texture. The objective of this work was to study the effect of drying temperatures (60, 70 and 80 °C) on the drying characteristics, total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (assessed by DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity assays) and specific energy consumption of the dried slightly sticky mango sheets. The experimental results showed that the times required to reach the desired final moisture content were 230, 150 and 120 min when drying was performed at the temperatures of 60, 70 and 80 °C, respectively. The total specific energy consumption (SECtotal) values of the drying at 70 and 80 °C were lower than that at 60 °C. However, the TPC and the antioxidant activities assessed by DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity assays were not significantly different amongst the samples dried at different temperatures.

Abstract. Prihantini AI, Rizqiani K. 2019. Various antioxidant assays of agarwood extracts (Gyrinops versteegii) from West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Asian J Agric 3: 1-5. However, the species have not been widely explored as a source of natural products in particular antioxidant agents, which protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. The present study was aimed to evaluate antioxidant activities of agarwood extracts from West Nusa Tenggara using various antioxidant assays. The antioxidant activity of leaf, fruit and fruit bark extracts were investigated based on DPPH radicals scavenging activity, reducing power, and β-carotene bleaching assays. The total phenolic content was also investigated. The result showed that leaf extract revealed the strongest antioxidant activity on all assays performed such as DPPH radicals scavenging activity (IC50 22.13±0.71 μg/mL); reducing power (251.85±0.03 mg QE/g dry extract); and β-carotene bleaching activity (IC50 24.23±2.60 μg/mL). The total phenolic content (TPC) in the leaf was higher (184.90±0.76 mg GAE/g dry extract) than fruit bark and bark extracts. The high content of phenolic compounds in G. versteegii leaves indicated that these compounds might contribute to the antioxidant activities. In conclusion, these findings showed that G. versteegii leaves are potential for development as an antioxidant source.

In this study we investigate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activities of ethanolic leaves extracts of three selected varieties of Phoenyx dactylifera L. namely: “Ghars”, “Deglet Nour” and “Hamraya”. The assessment of the antioxidant potential of crude leaves extracts, using superoxide anions inhibition, DPPH and total antioxidant activity essays, was carried out. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory properties of the extracts were determined by measuring the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production. Moreover, the antidiabetic effect was evaluated by inhibition of α-amylase enzymes. The total phenolic content measured by Folin-Ciocalteu method was as well conducted. The raw leaves extracts of the selected varieties was found to contain a high content of total phenolic content (342.45 mg GAE/gDW for GE) and therefore exhibited a higher antioxidant activity and inhibitory effect of radicals scavenging activity against DPPH and superoxide anion (IC50 = 7.44 μg/mL and 39.11 μg/mL respectively). The three varieties exhibited significant inhibition nitric oxide using In Vitro assay (IC50 = 240.28 μg/mL for GE). The extracts also displayed high inhibition actions against α-amylase enzymes. The results suggest that the leaves of the three selected varieties of Phoenyx dactylifera can be considered as a good source of natural antioxidant and anti-inflammation drugs as well as potent antidiabetic medicine.

This research aimed to determine the antioxidant activity of coconut sap added by different concentration of lysine during the heating process by means of regression analysis. This regression can be utilized to predict the antioxidant activity of coconut sap. A number of antioxidant parameters, i.e. total phenolic content, browning intensity, DPPH scavenging activity, and chelating activity, were measured using standard methods. The results showed that the changes in the total phenolic content of coconut sap against temperature during heating process followed a logarithmic regression function. The correlation between total phenolic content and heating temperature was quite strong until the temperature reached 100oC. Moreover, the changes in both browning intensity and DPPH scavenging activity of coconut sap against heating temperature followed an exponential regression. A quadratic regression function can represent the relationship between the chelating activity of coconut sap and heating temperature since the correlation of those parameters was relatively strong in the temperature range of 28-100oC. This study showed that the changes in total phenolic content, browning intensity, DPPH scavenging activity, and chelating activity of coconut sap during heating can be determined using regression analysis.

Background: Phenolic compounds are distributed throughout the plant kingdom. Numerous investigations have proved that Pistacia species have secondary metabolites, and these contain different classes of bioactive phenolic compounds. Objective: The objective of the present work was to optimize the extraction conditions of phenolic compounds from Pistacia palaestina leaves cultivated in Syria and find out the effects of the solvent type, extraction time, and temperature on total phenolic content (TPC) and in vitro antioxidant activity% (AA%). Two different growth stages were studied. Methods: Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content values were estimated using 2,2’-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl and Folin-Ciocalteu methods, respectively. Results: The highest TPC and AA% were found in fresh leaves (14.32g/100g and 92.69%, respectively). The optimum extraction solvent for phenolic recovery and antioxidant capacity was acetone 40%. Changes both in temperature (25, 40, 60 and 80°C) and time (15, 30, 45 and 60 min) had no significant influence on TPC and AA% of Pistacia extracts. Conclusion: Phenolic compounds could be extracted in a short time at a low temperature and could be used as natural antioxidant agents.
