Abstract A chitosan (CS)–HgS nanocomposite was synthesized by a simulating biomineralization method. The effect of HgS nanoparticles on the physical properties of the composite was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composite was 22°C higher than that of CS. The thermal stability of the composite was higher than that of CS, which was evidenced by the shift of onset temperature of degradation by 22°C as measured by DSC. The SEM image of the HgS/CS nanocomposite film shows that the nanoparticle size was 100 nm. The fluorescence emission of nanocomposite films was found to be very sensitive to the presence of triethylamine; even a small amount of triethylamine dramatically increased emissions. By contrast, emission was hardly affected by other common ions in water. The films are predicted to have the potential to be developed into excellent sensing films for triethylamine.

The thermal stability of constituent particles in both as-rolled and solution treated in AA7A55 has been investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Three types of solution treatments were used to dissolve particles constituents. Whereas the degree of recrystallization aggravates which deteriorates the properties with increasing the solution temperature, a significant amount of recrystallization exists after utilizing 480°C solution treatment whereas a much smaller extent from 480°C to 490°C. And electrochemical and exfoliation corrosion matched with the degree of recrystallization. With increasing the recrystallization the corrosion become worse.

The super-tough bio-based nylon was prepared by melt extrusion. In order to improve the compatibility between bio-based nylon and elastomer, the elastomer POE was grafted with maleic anhydride. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were used to study the compatibility and micro-distribution between super-tough bio-based nylon and toughened elastomers. The results of mechanical strength experiments show that the 20% content of POE-g-MAH has the best toughening effect. After toughening, the toughness of the super-tough nylon was significantly improved. The notched impact strength was 88 kJ/m2 increasing by 1700%, which was in line with the industrial super-tough nylon. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to study the crystallization behavior of bio-based PA56, and the effect of bio-based PA56 with high crystallinity on mechanical properties was analyzed from the microstructure.

AbstractA new polyethylene-compatible terthiophene chromophore, 5”-thio-(3- butyl)nonyl-2,2’:5’,2”-terthiophene, with melting point lower than 0°C was prepared and used for linear polarizers based on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy indicate that the new chromophore is dispersed uniformly in films of UHMWPE obtained by casting from solution. The films show excellent dichroic properties (dichroic ratio 30) at rather low drawing ratio (≈ 20) . Moreover, qualitative agreement is observed with the Ward pseudo-affine deformation scheme.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of cementitious capillary crystalline waterproofing (CCCW) material on the water impermeability and microstructure of concrete. The water impermeability of concrete covered with or without CCCW material was tested according to the Chinese standard GB 18445-2012. The results indicate that concretes coated with CCCW material showed much higher water impermeability than blank ones, and the ratio of water impermeability pressure between them reached 275. The samples obtained in various depths of hardened cement paste specimens with or without CCCW coating were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), to study the differences in microstructure and hydration products. The results present that after a 28-day standard curing, there were lots of ettringite crystals and CaCO3 formed in the paste in 1 cm from the coating, but the action depth of the CCCW coating could not reach 3 cm. The ettringite and CaCO3 is precipitated in the pore structure of cement matrix and filling the voids, which leads to the significant enhancement in water impermeability.

Based on analyzing of chemical composition, mineral composition and thermal stability of red mud, preparation of ceramisite, using anthracite added as foaming agent, was investigated. Internal structure was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed the bulk density of ceramisite was obviously reduced by anthracite added. The ceramisite with bulk density of 1.30g/cm3, water absorption rate£ ̈WAR£©of 2.98% and cylinder compressive strength £ ̈CCS£©of 9.48 MPa was obtained when weight ratio of red mud/waste glass/bentonites/anthracite was at 73:15:11:1. Majority of porosity in ceramisite was closed based on SEM. The porosity of ceramisite was much higher when anthracite was added as foaming agent than only calcite in red mud was used as foaming agent. The bulk density of the former was lower than that of the latter.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber is a very versatile fiber that can be produced with different properties, such as antimicrobial activity. This study aims to synthesize antimicrobial PET filaments incorporated with silver nanoparticles immobilized in silica (NPAg-Si) by bulk additive method. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) characterized the obtained filaments at concentrations (w/w) of 0.008%, 0.016%, 0.032%, 0.047% and 0.063% NPAg-Si, in order to identify the nanoparticles and analyze their dispersion in the polymeric matrix. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was carry out to confirm the presence and concentration of the silver nanoparticles in the filaments as well as the thermal stability of the nanocomposites. The bulk addition method was efficient to produce PET-Silver filaments with silver nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed in the PET matrix.

Scandia, yttria doped zirconia ((ZrO2)0.96(REO1.5)0.04(RE=Sc3+, Y3+)) nanoparticles were prepared by the modified sol-gel method. The microstructure of the products was characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. Thermal stabillity of SYSZ nanocrystals were also investigated. The SYSZ nanocrystals synthesized with EGM:Zr+4mole ratio 4:1, calcined at 700°C, have average diameter of ~20 nm.

An energetic co-crystal consisting of the most promising military explosive 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) and the most well-known oxidant applied in propellants ammonium perchlorate has been prepared with a simple solvent evaporation method. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the morphology of co-crystal differs greatly from each component. The X-ray diffraction spectrum, FTIR, Raman spectra, and differential scanning calorimetry characterisation further prove the formation of the co-crystal. The result of determination of hygroscopic rate indicated the hygroscopicity was effectively reduced. At last, the crystallisation mechanism has been discussed.
