AbstractThe oldest silver artefact from north of the Alps was found on the territory of Czech Republic is Stollhoff-type disc found in Kotouč hill near Štramberk. Similar silver disc was recently excavated at Vanovice (Czech Republic). This paper was complied to answer these particular questions: 1. what was the origin of earliest silver artefacts in Central Europe, 2. when these artefacts were emerged, and 3. what raw material was used and how it was processed. To answer these questions, typological analysis of vessels, thermoluminescence (TL) dating, compositional analysis (performed by ED-XRF) and scanning electron microscopy were employed. According to shape of ceramic vessels accompanying silver artefact, the Vanovice hoard can be dated to the Baalberge phase of the Funnel Beaker Culture during the later Eneolithic. Attempt to date pottery by TL method was not successful. The local origin of the pottery and the Carpathian/East-Balkan source of metal suggest that the Vanovice silver disc and the accompanying pottery were made in different periods, largely because precious metals endure longer than pottery.

The content of total anthocyanins was determined in grapes of nine grapevine (<i>Vitis vinifera</i> L.) varieties belonging to the traditional blue vine varieties grown in south Moravia (Czech Republic) within the period of 2002–2007. Factors of vintage and health condition of grapes were observed. The material balance of the colour substances in grapes was related to the dry matter of skins of berries and that of fresh grapes used as raw material for vinification. The highest content of pigments was found in the variety Neronet (2.15–4.49 g/kg of fresh grapes), which belongs to the so-called Teinturier varieties. Besides the variety Neronet (containing 30.6–73.4 mg/g of dry skin), high contents of total anthocyanins in dry skins were found in the varieties Dornfelder (24.7–59.0 mg/g of dry skin) and Cabernet Moravia (20.1–59.3 mg/g of dry skin). In the long run, the lowest concentrations of pigments were determined in grapes of the varieties Blauer Portugieser (0.51–1.02 g/kg of fresh grapes) and Pinot noir (0.27–0.60 g/kg of fresh grapes). The highest colour capacity was found in grapes harvested in the 2003 and 2006. Contents of anthocyanins were significantly lower (<i>P</i> = 0.001) in damaged grapes. Grapes containing more than 40% of rotten berries revealed in skins and whole grapes only 41% and 55%, respectively, of the colour capacity of the healthy raw material.

AbstractThe representatives of the genus Compsopogon Montagne in Bory et Durieaux (Rhodophyta) are basically tropical or subtropical algae. In central Europe they are only found in aquaria and in water bodies affected by thermal effluents, like the species C. aeruginosus (J. Agardh) Kützing in the Pulkau River (Austria), a tributary of the Dyje /Thaya River (Austria, Czech Republic). The first observation of this species was made in 2007 in the Pulkau River. In autumn 2010 the species was also observed at lower densities in an approximately 20 km section of the Dyje/Thaya River between the mouth of the Pulkau River (A) and the Nové Mlýny Reservoir (CR). Recently, the species was found also in Skryjský Brook, a tributary of the Jihlava River, below the cooling water effluent from the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant, South Moravia, Czech Republic. This is the second finding of representatives of the genus Compsopogon in rivers in central Europe.

AbstractThis paper reviews of some of the progress made in the development of ZnO-based light emitting diodes (LEDs). n-ZnO/p-AlGaN-based heterostructures have been successfully for the fabrication of UV emitting LEDs that have operated at temperatures up to 650K, suggesting an excitonic origin for the optical transitions. RF-plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy has been used to grow epitaxial CdxZn1-xO films on GaN/sapphire structure. These films have a single-crystal wurtzite structure as demonstrated by structural and compositional analysis. High quality CdxZn1-xO films were grown with up to x=0.78 mole fraction as determined by RBS and SIMS techniques. Optical emission ranging from purple (Cd0.05Zn0.95O) to yellow (Cd0.29Zn0.71O) was observed. Compositional fluctuations in a Cd0.16Zn0.84O films were not detected by spatially resolved CL measurements, although intensity fluctuation with features of ∼0.5 μm diameter were seen on the intensity maps. Time resolved photoluminescence shows multi-exponential decay with 21 psec. and 49±3 psec. lifetimes, suggesting that composition micro-fluctuations may be present in Cd0.16Zn0.84O film.

The Alps are an important hotspot of species diversity and endemism, as well as a presumed glacial refugium of several species’ groups including land snails. The recent ranges of Alpine endemics are well known, but their fluctuations during the postglacial period mirroring local climate changes are understudied. By analysing five Late Glacial and Holocene mollusc successions from two areas in the southernmost part of the Bohemian Massif (Czech Republic) situated about 100 km north of the Alps, we reveal details of these fluctuations. The Alpine endemic rocky dweller Chilostoma achates had reached the southern part of the Bohemian Massif already in the Late Glacial and disappeared in the Mid-Holocene canopy forest optimum. On the contrary, the northern boundaries of Alpine canopy forest epigeic snails extended further north than today at the turn of the Middle and Late-Holocene, pointing to a more favourable forest microclimate. The earliest known occurrences of several temperate canopy forest central European species, especially Causa holosericea and Discus perspectivus, imply the role of different areas in the Alps as their glacial refugia.

The processing of phosphorites into elemental phosphorus is accom-panied by the formation of waste - cotrile "milk", in which indium, gallium, and silver are present. This waste can be considered as a cheap raw material for the production of rare and precious metals. In the scientific literature there are data on the sorption capacity of hexacyano-ferrates of iron, which has a crystal lattice with a channel diameter from 3.0 to 3.5Å. Investigation of the sorption process in the model system "Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3·10H2O - Ag+- In3+- Ga3+ - H2O" depending on the norm of iron hexacyanoferrate (sorbent). The initial concentration of silver, indium and gallium ions and their residual content in solutions were determined using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer "PerkinElmer Analyst 400" (USA). The microstructure of the initial iron hexacyanoferrate and iron hexacyano-ferrate, after sorption, was studied on the CarlZeissFESEM and JEOL brand "JXA-8230" (Japan). With a ratio to T:W equal to 1.75-2.5:100, the degree of sorption of Ag+ with iron hexacyanoferrate is 99.5 and 99.8 %. The highest degree of sorption (96.75%) of In3+ ions can be obtained with a sorbent weighing 3 g per 100 g of solution at 60oC. A high degree of sorption of Ga3+ cations is achieved at low (0.5:100 wt. h.) and high (3:100 wt. h.) consumption of iron hexacyanoferrate. It was revealed that iron hexacyanoferrate exhibits sorption properties simultaneously with respect to mono- and trivalent metals, and the basic laws of their sorption were established.

Abstract It is known that nowadays one of the main problems of mining is the depletion of reserves. The researchers consider mining waste as a source of replenishment of the resource base. Disputes on the prospects for technogenic raw material processing are becoming especially relevant. The object of research chosen by the authors in this article is the technogenic neoplasms resulting from dredging and hydraulic processing of placer gold. The paper presents the results of assessing the prospects and application of the information technologies, in particular, the analysis of data from remote sensing of the Earth in the design and organization of work to involve technogenic placers in operation. It is shown that these technologies are able to increase the efficiency of work and reduce labor costs at the stage of preliminary study of potential development targets. Technogenic complexes of depleted fields are a significant reserve of the mineral resource base of gold and other precious metals. This paper presents the results of the creation of a method for expert assessment of spatial and volumetric indicators of technogenic complexes of alluvial fields and other landscape objects using remote sensing of the territory and analysis of geological information. The Kerbinsky gold-bearing region of the Khabarovsk Region was chosen as the object of research.

The results of studies of the qualitative composition and quantitative content of amino acids (AAs) in the leaves of three plant species of the genus Artemisia, widespread in the Elton region, were presented. Protein AAs were determined on an AAA T-339 amino acid analyzer (Czech Republic) after hydrolysis of a sample in 6N HCl at 105 °C for 24 h, free AAs – on an AAA-400 amino acid analyzer (Czech Republic) in a lithium buffer system. The protein AAs amount varied from 66 mg / g in A. lerchiana to 113 mg / g dry weight in A. santonica. 17 AAs were found in composition of these species, aspartic and glutamic acids were dominant. The content of free AAs varied from 4.4 mg / g in A. santonica to 8.3 mg / g dry weight in A. pauciflora. 14 AAs have been identified, among them proline was the predominant free AA. The share of proline was 75-81% of the total free AAs. Among the minor components, 3-4 compounds with a content above 2% dominated. The free AAs contain 3 non-proteinogenic ones (ornithine, citruline, and γ-aminobutyric acid). A. lerchiana and A. pauciflora species were similar in protein and free amino acids, probably due to the same growing conditions. A high level of free proline, together with a complex of biologically active substances in Artemisia species, which grow abundantly in the Elton region, allow to consider the possibility of their use as a medicinal raw material.

Herb-mate is a raw material of great importance to Southern Brazil, considering its annual production of approximately 650,000 tons of leaves. The hot mate, known as chimarrão, is the most appreciated beverage and its consumption is linked to the traditions and cultural habits predominantly in the south of the country. Considering its huge importance, the objective of the work was to evaluate the production of laboratory herbmate for chimarrão in order to establish a comparison with the products available on the market. Therefore, it was considered the current legislation and the analysis of its organoleptic and granulometric properties, humidity level and concentration of some toxic metals quantified by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The manufacturing of the final product was made in three steps: first of all, the leaves were submitted to direct fire, then they were dried at a temperature of 40 Cº for 24 hours and, finally, they were ground in a knife mill for 10 minutes. The obtained results showed, in most of the analyzed characteristics, a great similarity between the laboratorial and commercial herb, obtaining approval from 90% of chimarrão consumers who participated in the organoleptic tests. However, the coloration was considered darker and can be explained by logistic problems between the plantation and the laboratory. There was also a divergence in the metals analysis, which showed a higher lead and cadmium concentration when compared to the herbs found on the supermarket shelves. Alarming numbers for consumers were found, since the commercial herbs pointed levels above the recommended for all analyzed metals, which indicate the urgent need for better inspection, as well as improved manufacturing practices of the final product and a better raw material cultivation.
