Abstract The geological structure of the Bełchatów area is very complicated as a result of tectonic and sedimentation processes. The long-term exploitation of the Bełchatów field influenced the development of horizontal displacements. The variety of factors that have impact on the Bełchatów western slope stability conditions, forced the necessity of complex geotechnical monitoring. The geotechnical monitoring of the western slope was carried out with the use of slope inclinometers. From 2005 to 2013 fourteen slope inclinometers were installed, however, currently seven of them are in operation. The present analysis depicts inclinometers situated in the north part of the western slope, for which the largest deformations were registered. The results revealed that the horizontal displacements and formation of slip surfaces are related to complicated geological structure and intensive tectonic deformations in the area. Therefore, the influence of exploitation marked by changes in slope geometry was also noticeable.

Abstract To develop the optimal strategy for developing a hydrocarbon field, one should know in fine detail its geological structure. More and more attention has been paid to cavernous-fractured reservoirs within the carbonate environment in the last decades. This article presents a technology for three-dimensional computing images of such reservoirs using scattered seismic waves. To verify it, we built a particular synthetic model, a digital twin of one of the licensed objects in the north of Eastern Siberia. One distinctive feature of this digital twin is the representation of faults not as some ideal slip surfaces but as three-dimensional geological bodies filled with tectonic breccias. To simulate such breccias and the geometry of these bodies, we performed a series of numerical experiments based on the discrete elements technique. The purpose of these experiments is the simulation of the geomechanical processes of fault formation. For the digital twin constructed, we performed full-scale 3D seismic modeling, which made it possible to conduct fully controlled numerical experiments on the construction of wave images and, on this basis, to propose an optimal seismic data processing graph.

The paper summarizes the geodetic contribution for the Slovak team within the joint Polish-Slovak archaeological mission at Tell el-Retaba in Egypt. Surveying work at archaeological excavations is usually influenced by somewhat specific subject of study and extreme conditions, especially at the missions in the developing countries. The case study describes spatial data development according to the archaeological conventions in order to document spatial relationships between the objects in excavated trenches. The long-term sustainability of surveying work at the site has been ensured by detailed metadata recording. Except the trench mapping, Digital Elevation Model has been calculated for the study area and for the north-eastern part of the site, with promising preliminary results for further detection and modelling of archaeological structures. In general, topographic mapping together with modern technologies like Photogrammetry, Satellite Imagery, and Remote Sensing provide valuable data sources for spatial and statistical modelling of the sites; and the results offer a different perspective for the archaeological research.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to define suitable tracers that are particularly significant in assessing the impact on the surrounding environment caused by a steel making plant. Design/methodology/approach – The authors focussed on the detection and quantification of inorganic pollutants such as heavy metals in the soil and in the air in the surrounding area of the steel making plant. The presented data, concerning a plant in the North part of Italy, come from an approach that took into account the advantages of different devices and sampling criteria: apart from conventional devices, two kinds of deposimeters have been used (for characterizing either total or wet/dry depositions). Their locations have been chosen taking into account the distance from the plant. Findings – The paper demonstrates that the presence of diffused emissions plays an important (negative) role still today; thus a modern plant should reduce this kind of emission in order to be accepted from the population living in the surroundings. In the analyzed case study, the benefits of adopting the best available technologies can be seen from the temporal variability of the incidence of the plant. Originality/value – The value of the paper is in the support that it can give to decision makers that must manage a steel making plant in an area.

The measureable magnetic field intensity variation is then interpreted in the form of the distribution of the magnetic material below the surface, then used as the basis for the prediction of possible geological conditions observed. The iron ore deposits in the survei area are generally interpreted as a form of sediment that fills the rock cavities, especially in limestone cavities. This occurs due to the geological structure that gives space for the placement of mineralization of ore deposits in the side rock zone. The value of this magnetic anomaly is located in the west, the eastern, and also in the north part.  Keywords: Geomagnet Method, Iron Ore, Magnetic Properties, Magnetic Value, Magnetic Anomaly Value.

The article demonstrates a method for quantitative-qualitative geodiversity assessment based on core elements of abiotic nature (geology and geomorphology) according to a proposed weight multiplied by the area of spread through the studied region. The territory of the Coromandel Peninsula was selected as a case study due to its diverse geology and geomorphology. The north part of the Peninsula (Port Jackson, Fletcher Bay and Port Charles districts) was chosen because of the variety of rock types (sedimentary and volcanic groups) covering the region, while historical stratovolcano remnants and old sediments provide a good variety of meadow hills and weathered coastal cliffs. Meanwhile, the method utilizes easily accessible data (topographical and geological map) to assess slope angle (morphometry) and rock groups, including their age (geology) to identify areas in the sample region with significant geodiversity values. Moreover, the aim of this research is to make the assessment of geodiversity simpler and more accessible for various parts of the world with minimal required information. In this paper, we provide access to improve and utilize this method in geologically diverse territories to select the best areas for geotourism, geoeducation and geconservation planning.

Abstract Objective: To understand the repercussions of coexisting with the drug use in a family based on the daughter's narrative of a woman who is a multiple drugs user. Method: A case study with a family accessed in 2014, through the records of a Poison Control Center in the North of Paraná. It was used a semi-structured interview and field journal, and resources of thematic oral history to apprehend the story, from the question "How is/was for you and your family to live with a mother who is a drug user?” Results: The daughter's memories emphasized repercussions in the family context: long-term of living with drug abuse; absence or transience of the motherly figure, with rupture processes for homeless situation; cycle of parental disruption/forgiveness and continued presence and fatherly support. Final considerations: The narrative indicated a family that could be added to the process of rehabilitation and social reintegration of the female drug user.

<p>The results of the magnetoteluric investigations carried out along the profiles are presented in the form of sections in which the variations of the different parameters, the 2-D modeling, as well as the inversions.</p><p>The results of the geophysical researches (magnetotellurics, gravity, geomagnetics) obtained were aimed at obtaining a unitary image on the deep geological structure in the investigated area. A number of information was obtained regarding such as:</p><ul><li>Determination of the thickness of the package of formations belonging to the post-tectogenetic sedimentary cover of the Transylvanian Depression; sedimentary sedimentary cover, conductive, with a maximum thickness of approximately 4000 m in the Pannonian Depression;</li> <li>Contouring of the Tethysian Major Suture (near the town of Alba Iulia in the Transylvanian Basin), represented by the Transylvanian nappes system (ofiolitic complex and sedimentary formations), with resistivities of about 500 Ohm*m, which separates two blocks with continental crust of different thicknesses (22- 27 km for Internal Dacids and 32-36 km for Median Dacids);</li> <li>Highlighting the change of nappes systems belonging to the Transylvanians, with a wide development both to the north (Căpâlnas-Techereu nappes and the nappes of Groşi and Criş), as well as to the east (the ophiolite complex and sedimentary cover), over the Biharia nappes system, respectively Central-Eastern Carpathian nappes; extension of the Codru and Biharia - Arieşeni nappes, the last with higher resistivities (200 Ohm*m);</li> <li>Highlighting the transcrustal fault that marks the contact between the Inner Dacides and the Median ones;</li> <li>Individualization at the level of the lower crust of a transition zone; significant decrease of resistivity, as a consequence of the presence of the fluids in the transition zone, from the pressure in the pores from lithostatic type to the hydrostatic type (occurs at depths of 22 - 30 km and at temperatures of 350º - 400º C).</li> </ul><p>The electromagnetic data reflect the anomalies of electrical conductivity in a sensitive way, but due to the many causes that can generate them, a careful analysis of the particularities existing for each case, especially the superficial ones, was necessary.</p><p>The correlation of the all the information provided in sections (resistivity, phases, density, magnetic susceptibility), inversions, modeling, lead to the validation of the model.</p>

AbstractThe catastrophic lahars triggered by the 13 November 1985 eruption of the ice-clad Nevado del Ruiz volcano, Colombia, demonstrate that the interaction of hot pyroclasts with snow and ice can release 30–50 millionm3 of meltwater in 30–90 minutes. The 1985 eruption caused a 16% loss in area and a 9% loss in volume of snow, firn and ice. Turbulent pyroclastic density currents mechanically mixed with snow and produced meltwater at a rate of 0.5–1.6mms–1. Laboratory experiments suggest that turbulent, fluidized pyroclastic density currents exert mechanical and thermal scour, thereby efficiently transferring heat from hot pyroclasts to snow. Ice cap loss at Nevado del Ruiz continued between 1985 and 2000, representing a ∽52% decline in area and a ∽30% fall in volume. Ice 60–190m thick caps the east and southeast summit plateau, whereas an ice field < 30m thick and devoid of snow is retreating on the north, northeast and west edges. This asymmetrical distribution of ice reflects combined long-term effects of the 1985 eruption and of the post-1985 ice cap retreat. Should volcanic activity resume, steep-sided glaciers can fail and pyroclastic flows and surges can sweep the snowpack and generate mixed avalanches and lahars. Although the potential source of meltwater has decreased since 1985, extensive debris at the ice cap margins can be incorporated to future lahars.

A twenty-four-year on-going project of acid gas sequestration in a deep geological structure was subject to detailed modelling based upon a large set of geological, geophysical, and petrophysical data. The model was calibrated against available operational and monitoring data and used to determine basic characteristics of the sequestration process, such as fluid saturations and compositions, their variation in time due to fluid migrations, and the gas transition between free and aqueous phases. The simulation results were analysed with respect to various gas leakage risks. The contribution of various trapping mechanisms to the total sequestrated amount of injected gas was estimated. The observation evidence of no acid gas leakage from the structure was confirmed and explained by the simulation results of the sequestration process. The constructed and calibrated model of the structure was also used to predict the capacity of the analysed structure for increased sequestration by finding the optimum scenario of the risk-free sequestration performance.

Since water shortage has been a serious challenge in Iran, long-term investigations of alternative water resources are vital. In this study, we performed long-term (1979–2018) model simulation at seven locations (costal, desert, mountain, and urban conditions) in Iran to investigate temporal and spatial variation of dew formation. The model was developed to simulate the dew formation (water and ice) based on the heat and mass balance equation with ECMWF-ERA-Interim (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts–Re-Analysis) meteorological data as input. According to the model simulation, the maximum mean yearly cumulative dew yield (~65 L/m2) was observed in the mountain region in the north part of Iran with a yearly mean cumulative dew yield was ~36 L/m2. The dew yield showed a clear seasonal variation at all selected locations with maximum yields in winter (mean monthly cumulative 3–8 L/m2 depending on the location). Here we showed that dew formation is frequent in northern Iran. In other areas, where there was suffering from water-stress (southern and central parts of Iran), dew can be a utilized as an alternative source of water. The dew yield during 2001–2014 was lower than the overall mean during the past 40 years a result of climate change in Iran.
