A series of new hydrophobic and protic alkylammonium ionic liquids with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide or bis(perfluoroethylsulfonyl)imide as conjugated anions was synthesized in a one-pot reaction with a high yield. In essence our synthesis method involves the combination of neutralization and metathesis reactions. Some of these hydrophobic and protic ionic liquids were liquids at room temperature and therefore investigated as new extraction media for separation of Sr2+ and Cs+ from aqueous solutions. An excellent extraction efficiency was found for some of these ionic liquids using dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 and calix[4]arene-bis(tert-octylbenzo-crown-6) as extractants. The observed enhancement in the extraction efficiency can be attributed to the greater hydrophilicity of the cations of the protic ionic liquids. The application of the protic ionic liquids as new solvent systems for solvent extraction opens up a new avenue in searching for simple and efficient ionic liquids for tailored separation processes.

An effective approach to monobromination reactions utilizing room temperature ball-milling is introduced for the synthesis of aryl bromides and bromoketones with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) and MCM-41-SO3H. Advantages of this technique are short reaction times and high regioselectivity. In contrast to other techniques using microwaves, ultrasound, or ionic liquids, handling of sensitive materials is possible and furthermore, this method has advantages over other solvent-free techniques that require a higher reaction temperature for high yield of products.

AbstractStarting from readily available 2-naphthol, aldehydes, aryl and alkylamines, a variety of Betti bases were efficiently synthesized utilizing a catalytic amount of cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) at room temperature. This protocol has advantages of high yield, mild reaction conditions, no environmental pollution, diversity of reactants and simple work up procedure.

Abstract This review article gives a comprehensive account of the extraction of actinide ions using room temperature ionic liquid-based solvent systems containing diglycolamide (DGA) or functionalized DGA extractants. These extractants include multiple DGA-functionalized ligands such as tripodal DGA (T-DGA) and DGA-functionalized calix [4]arenes (C4DGA). Apart from metal ion extraction behaviour, other important features of the ionic liquid-based solvent systems such as separation behaviour, luminescence spectroscopic results, thermodynamics of extraction and radiolytic stability of the ionic liquid-based solvents are also reviewed. Results from studies on DGA-functionalized task-specific ionic liquids (TSIL) are also included in this review article.

High throughput methods were used to investigate ionic liquid containing solutions to provide systematic data of a broad compositional space. We have principally focused on the surface tension, apparent pH and liquid nanostructure to identify potential self-assembly and protein stabilizing ability of solvent systems.
