In this paper, we report a new phenomenon observed in the gamma-ray radiation-induced hydrophobic effects on an Invar surface: When the Invar alloy is subjected to different doses of gamma-ray irradiation, the contact angle increases with the radiation dose. Invar samples with exposed to a higher dose appear more hydrophobic, but this tendency disappears following post-irradiation etching. The contact angles of the irradiated and etched Invar samples can be restored back to a stable value with small deviation after 30 min of annealing at 150°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis found no crystalline structural changes. High resolution field emission scanning microscope (FE-SEM) analyses showed that irradiation might induce crack-like surfaces which could be removed at higher radiation dose in the following acid etchings. It is believed that the chemical bonds of Invar oxide on the surface were broken by the gamma-ray irradiation, thus raising the likelihood of binding with free ions in the air and resulting in the exclusion of the hydrophilic OH bonds, leaving a hydrophobic post-irradiation Invar surface.

In this study, the effect of film layer deposited on a metal surface by vacuum evaporation method on the RISA phenomenon was investigated from the view points of surface wettability and quenching velocity. Test rods were made of SUS304 with the outer diameter of 24mm and the length of 150mm. Four kinds of materials, i.e. titanium, zircaloy-II, germanium and silicon, were deposited separately on the half-circumference surface of a SUS304 rod with thickness of 200 nm. It was concluded that the RISA effect was observed on the film-coated surfaces after gamma-ray irradiation, which is similar to that on an oxide layer of SUS304 surface. It was also found that the quenching velocity on film-coated surfaces was much faster than that on an un-coated surface.

AbstractRadiation decomposition and aerosol formation of various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were examined to get information on a treatment of industrial off-gas. Model gases, air containing aromatic VOCs, chloroethenes and 1,2-dichloroethane, were sealed in batch reactors and irradiated with electron beam (EB) and gamma ray. For aromatic VOCs, G-values of decomposition in gamma ray irradiation were about 1.5 times larger than those in EB irradiation. The ratios of aerosol formation to decomposed aromatic VOCs were ranged from 30 to 66% on the basis of carbon. For chloroethenes except monochloroethylene, G-values of decomposition were 6 to 45 times larger than those of aromatic VOCs and the irradiated product was mainly gaseous compound. The G-values of decomposition in EB irradiation increased markedly with increase of chlorine atom in a molecule, while those in gamma ray irradiation were almost kept constant.

The objective of this study is to study the effect of gamma ray irradiation (15, 30, 45, and 60 gray (Gy) to determine Lethal Dose 50 (LD50) values, and to obtain new Coleus variances in a relatively short time. The study was conducted in a greenhouse at Cikabayan experimental field, Bogor Agricultural University, Darmaga, Bogor in May to July 2013. Gamma irradiation treatment significantly affected height, number of leaves, and number of nodes. Increasing the dose level of gamma irradiation tend to inhibit plant growth. LD50 for yellow/green, green/brown, variegated green/brown of Coleus blumei, and Coleus amboinicus Lour were 48.66, 65.2, 52.81, and 37.62 Gy respectively. C. amboinicus  irradiated at a dose level of 45 Gy had different leaf shapes compared to control. Keywords:  Coleus, gamma ray irradiation, LD50 values, ornamental plant, torbangun

In this paper, we report the characterization of springback degradation of an Invar sheet with a combination of gamma-ray irradiation and repeated hot-then-cold stresses. The springback factor value of fresh Invar without radiation shows a linear increase with the number of hot-then-cold stress cycles. Continuous springback degradations are observed as the number of hot-then-cold stress cycles reaches 100. When the Invar sheet is subjected to gamma-ray irradiation, the springback factor is greater than that of the repeated hot-then-cold stressed samples. After applying the repeated hot-then-cold stresses to the post-irradiated Invar sheets, the springback factors are first restored to the value of fresh Invar, and then revert to an increasing trend. Our previous X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis excluded the crystalline structural changes in the post-irradiated Invar. It is believed that the radiation-induced defects, which are closely related to the springback degradation, are possibly annealed during the first 20 hot-then-cold stress cycles. These cycles ultimately dominate the springback behavior of the stressed Invar sheets.

Lethality, food intake, clinical symptoms and terminal histological changes were followed after gamma-irradiation with doses of 10, 20, 30, 35 and 40 Gy in guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Clinical symptoms, food intake and longevity were also monitored in the progeny of fish irradiated with a dose of 10 Gy. In the first days after irradiation timidity and lethargy were observed. After doses of 30, 35 and 40 Gy, these symptoms were accompanied with anorexia. The most prominent clinical symptoms observed were emaciation, hampered breathing, exophthalmia and haemorrhages. Histological findings corresponded with these symptoms. In the fish irradiated with 10 or 20 Gy the progeny survived, after a dose of 30 Gy the progeny died within 24 hours after birth and after doses of 35 and 40 Gy dead progeny was born. The survival data provide an estimate of LD50/30 equal to 29 Gy. Higher relative mortality and more severe clinical symptoms were observed in females. The progeny of irradiated parent fish grew and survived for 3 months maximum.
