Oral health is recognized as equally important in relation to general health. Proper oral hygiene is the fundamental basis of the common risk factor approach to prevent the oral diseases. Dental caries is the common oral pathology that remain widely prevalent among all populations throughout the lifespan. The school years cover a period that runs from childhood to adolescence. These are influential and receptive stages in people’s lives when lifelong sustainable oral health related behaviors, as well as beliefs and attitudes, are being developed. Children may also be equipped with personal skills that enable them to make healthy decisions. So school may be considered as an ideal setting for conducing successful health programs. This study provides important information to identify the oral hygiene practices and aims to implement the oral health education package among school students. The objective of the study is to identify the status of oral hygiene practices, its associated factors, and evaluate the effectiveness of oral health education package in improving the practices on oral hygiene among the students of 6-8 grade of Bajrabarahi Municipility of Lalitpur District. The school based action research was conducted among the students of grade 6-8 of Bajrabarahi Municipality. The study was completed in three phases. The phase I was Baseline study Phase, this phase was conducted to identify the status and gaps on oral hygiene practices. Phase II was the package development phase, from the findings of the baseline study the intervention package on oral hygiene was developed. Phase III was implementation phase, in this phase the implementation and evaluation of health education package on oral hygiene practices was done. Baseline study was conducted in total 5 secondary private school of Bajrabarahi Municipality which was selected randomly and all the students of class 6-8 were selected as a study population. Quantitative technique was used for the data collection the self-administered questionnaire was employed to collect the information from the students. Cross sectional study design was applied for the baseline study. Data entry and analysis was done on SPSS 21 version Study reveals that 100% of the respondents brush their teeth daily. Only 37.6% of the student brush their teeth twice a day. Majority of the student use toothpaste and toothbrush to clean their teeth. 54% of the respondent change their toothbrush more than 6 month. Among the participants 23.9% followed the appropriate technique of brushing. 55% of the participant used to rinse their mouth after major meal and 45% rinse their mouth only after major meal. Only 20.2% of the participant used to visit dentist every 6 month. Regarding the status of oral hygiene practice more than fifty percent of the participant have below average practice on oral hygiene (55.8%). Regarding knowledge only 36.1% participants have knowledge on proper techniques of brushing. 85.2% have above or equal average knowledge on oral hygiene. The education level of the mother and perceived barrier was found significantly associated with oral hygiene practice. The second phase of the study was package development phase. In this phase package on oral hygiene was developed according to the information obtained from the baseline study. From the baseline findings the package was developed on proper technique of brushing. Package was developed by analyzing the methods media and content. The third phase of the study was to implement and evaluate of the oral health education package. Package was implemented in 2 school among those 5 school where the baseline was conducted and remain 3 school were considered as control school. From the analysis of comparison between intervention and control group the oral health education package was found to be effective in changing knowledge, belief and practice among the student in the intervention group.

Background: Dental and oral health is one part that can not be separated from overall body health. Dental and oral care as a whole begins with dental and oral hygiene for each individual. Teaching methods of brushing teeth for children need to be given examples of a good model and with the simplest technique possible.Objectives: The research aims to increase the knowledge of SDN 33 Banda Aceh City students in maintaining dental and oral health and improve the dental and oral hygiene status of SDN 33 Banda Aceh City students.Method:  The research using a quantitative method with a descriptive approach, with the target of Class V students of SDN 33 Banda Aceh City Banda Aceh City totaling 30 children. Data analysis uses univariate analysis. The interventions provided were in the form of Dental Health Education (DHE).Results: The results of these community service activities show there is an increase in students' knowledge in the maintenance of dental and oral hygiene in SDN 33 Banda Aceh City students, with an increase before the intervention (pre-test) is in the sufficient category (56.7%) and after the intervention (post test) in the good category (96.7%). There was an increase in the status of dental and oral hygiene of students, with an increase before the intervention (pre-test) was in the bad category (100%) and after the intervention (post test) was in the good category (100%).Conclusion: It is recommended that schools provide regular counseling to students about the importance of maintaining oral health and holding joint toothbrushes to improve oral and dental hygiene.

The WHO 2010 reported connection between oral wellbeing and general wellbeing, with common risk factors including poor diet, tobacco use and alcohol consumption. People who suffer from general health problems (diabetes, HIV) are more likelihood to have oral diseases (periodontal diseases) that, in turn, further complicate their overall health.Thus, oral health is an integral part of general wellbeing . One of the many barriers to quality oral healthcare includes a lack of attention to oral health by non-dental health care professionals (e.g., nurses, pharmacists). Nurses, being the primary health care provider to the patients, play an important role in health sector. Aside from dental professional, nurses are an integral part in health promotion and preventive information dissemination, therefore it is important that oral health knowledge should be good to decrease poor oral health outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess oral health knowledge, attitude and oral hygiene practices among nursing student of Apollo School of Nursing , Mizoram.A Questionnaire study was conducted among 150 students of Apollo School of Nursing Mizoram. A self administered structured questionnaire containing oral hygiene knowledge and awareness, attitude and oral hygiene practices questions was distributed . Their response were analyzed and their knowledge and awareness, attitude and oral hygiene practice level(KAP) were evaluated. Statistical Analysis was done by calculating the mean of the KAP level (%) . The present study showed good oral hygiene practices and fair knowledge of oral health among nursing students of Apollo School of Nursing Mizoram

Oral health in the nation’s evolution, especially in this globalization, an absence of illness in the population plays a key role for a fecund and well established society. Purpose: To see the impact of oral health education intervention to improve oral health practices along-with formation of new carious lesions after oral health education after 3 months of intervention. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Methodology: Children (n=383) were included in present study through non-probability, convenient sampling technique. Children who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were examined with the examination tools on the dental unit office in the RHC for caries risk using a pre-validated caries risk assessment checklist and dental caries detection form. Statistical analysis: Data analyzed by SPSS 21.0v. Results: Majority of respondents (383) 100% didn’t have access to fluoridated water supply. Only 23.5% of the respondents have literate parent’s majority of them (76.5%) have illiterate parents. All the respondents 100% were at moderate risk. In comparison of risk associated with teeth missing due to caries in past 36 months, the respondents at low risk were 63.2%, High risk were 25.3% and moderate risk were 11.5%. Conclusion: This study concluded that intervention of oral hygiene instruction has produced significant results in motivating people for cleaning teeth regularly and avoiding the use of sugary foods and beverages to maintain their oral and general health. The study has interventions of tooth brush with paste and oral hygiene instruction for motivating and treating people. Introduction: Good oral hygiene provides a basis for good oral health and is important for prevention and treatment of oral conditions in children. Hence, it is essential to provide knowledge and treatment at regular intervals to the visually impaired individuals. Objective: To evaluate the oral hygiene practices of visually impaired students attending a blind school with the help of a questionnaire. Methods: The oral hygiene practices were evaluated in visually impaired students between the ages of 6 years to 22 years. A total of 92 students were enrolled from a blind school in Udaipur. The oral hygiene practice was assessed by a questionnaire survey. Results: About 96.7% of the students brushed their teeth daily out of which 94.3% brushed their teeth with the help of a toothbrush and toothpaste. Majority of them brushed once a day in the morning. A total of 39.1% of the students cleaned their tongue also. All the students brushed alone without any guidance or supervision. Conclusion: Although the blind students cannot see, they still practice good oral hygiene.

Background: Young children with special needs greatly rely on their parents to support their daily living activities; parental compliance may have great impact on the implementation of health promotion activities among those children. This study aimed to investigate the parental compliance towards oral health education (OHE) among children with special healthcare needs (SHCN). Method: The participants were 306 parents whose children had participated in a 24-month OHE program for preschool children with SHCN. The primary outcome of this cross-sectional study was parental compliance towards the OHE program. Parents’ oral health literacy (OHL) was assessed by a validated tool. Parents’ socioeconomic status, attitudes towards OHE topics, perceptions of children’s oral hygiene status, and usefulness of OHE materials were collected via questionnaires. Results: A higher dropout rate was observed among parents who perceived that their children had unfavorable oral hygiene status (p = 0.038), or parents who had poor OHL skills (p = 0.015). Parental noncompliance was more likely to be observed among parents who perceived that the OHE materials were not useful for their children (OR = 3.63, 95% CI 1.56 to 8.47, p = 0.003), or parents whose children had been diagnosed with developmental delays (OR = 5.45, 95% CI 1.59 to18.74, p = 0.007). Conclusion: Non-compliance existed among parents whose children had received OHE intervention. Parental compliance towards OHE intervention might be associated with parents’ OHL skills, usefulness of OHE materials, and children’s developmental conditions. OHE programs should be individually tailored to support children whose parents are at a higher risk of noncompliant behaviors.

Objective. This paper aims to assess the effectiveness of reinforcement of oral health education message through short messaging service (SMS) in mobile phones.Material and Methods. 400 subjects from two colleges (200 from each college) belonging to 18–20 years age group possessing mobile phones were randomly selected and baseline examination of oral hygiene and gingival status was carried out using Oral Hygiene Index (OHI) and Gingival Index (GI). Oral health education was provided to all the subjects. Oral health education message was reinforced through short messaging service (SMS) in mobile phones for the subjects belonging to the intervention group. There was no such reinforcement for the control group. Follow-up examinations were done at the end of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th month. After the 3rd month, subjects of the intervention group did not receive oral health education message through short messaging service (SMS) and were followed up after next three months. Compiled data was analyzed using SPSS version 16 statistical software.Result. Mean OHI and GI scores in intervention group were significantly (p<0.01) less than those of control group after the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th month.Conclusion. Reinforcement of oral health education message through short messaging service (SMS) is effective media to improve oral health.

Introduction. A poor oral hygiene is associated with dental caries, gingivitis, periodontal diseases, bad breath, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney diseases. Moreover, a poor oral health has psychosocial impacts that diminish a quality of life and restrict activities in school, at work, and home. African regions carry a major burden of oral health problems. However, very few studies highlighted about oral hygiene practices and there is also paucity of information in Ethiopia. This study was, therefore, designed to identify an oral hygiene practice on patients/clients visiting dental clinics in Hawassa City, Southern Ethiopia. Objective. To assess oral hygiene practices and associated factors among patients/clients visiting private dental clinics, Hawassa City, Southern Ethiopia. Methods. Institution-based cross-sectional study was employed among patients/clients attending private clinics in Hawassa City from January 27 to February 8, 2018. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select 403 study participants. Data were entered into EpiData 3.1, cleaned, and analyzed by SPSS 20. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between independent and outcome variables. Crude and adjusted OR with 95% confidence level was estimated, and variables having P value ≤0.05 in multivariable analysis were considered as significant. Results. 393 study participants participated making a response rate of 97.52%. A median age of respondents was 27 ± 10.9. About 153 (39.9%) of the study participants had poor oral hygienic practice. Male (AOR: 1.63, 95% CI: (1.053, 2.523)), rural residence (AOR: 3.79, 95% CI: (1.724, 8.317)), and poor knowledge about oral hygiene (AOR: 2.38, 95% CI: (1.402, 4.024)) were independently associated to poor oral hygienic practice. Conclusion. More than one-third of the study participants had poor oral hygienic practice. Providing health information regarding oral hygiene for the patients/clients in the facilities with a special focus from rural areas is recommended.

Pendahuluan: Tunanetra merupakan istilah yang digunakan untuk kondisi seseorang yang mengalami gangguan dalam indera penglihatannya. Keterbatasan fisik yang dialami oleh tunanetra menyebabkan pengetahuan tentang kesehatan gigi dan mulut sulit didapatkan dan cenderung memiliki tingkat kebersihan gigi dan mulut yang rendah. Oleh karena itu diperlukan pendekatan khusus agar pengetahuan dan kebersihan gigi dan mulut dapat meningkat. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalisis pengaruh edukasi kesehatan gigi dan mulut berbasis Braille terhadap tingkat kebersihan gigi dan mulut penyandang tunanetra. Metode: Jenis penelitian ini merupakan pre-eksperimental dengan desain penelitian one-group pretest-posttest design. Subjek penelitian berjumlah 18 siswa penyandang tunanetra SLB-A TPA dan SLB Negeri Jember yang diberikan edukasi berupa buku panduan kesehatan gigi dan mulut berbasis buku Braille. Subjek diminta untuk menjaga kebersihan gigi dan mulut salah satunya dengan menyikat gigi dua kali sehari selama 21 hari. Pengukuran tingkat kebersihan gigi dan mulut dilakukan menggunakan indeks OHI-S Green dan Vermillion. Pengukuran dilakukan pada hari ke-1 (evaluasi 1) sebelum diberi perlakuan dan pelatihan sikat gigi, hari ke-10 (evaluasi 2), dan hari ke-21 (evaluasi 3). Data dianalisis dengan uji komparatif parametrik paired sample t-test. Hasil: Distribusi data adalah normal dengan p-value (p>0,05) sebesar 0,200 (evaluasi 1), 0,126 (evaluasi 2), dan 0,118 (evaluasi 3). Edukasi yang diberikan selama 10 hari tidak menurunkan indeks OHI-S dengan p-value 0,317 (p>0,05). Edukasi selama 21 hari dapat menurunkan indeks OHI-S dengan p-value sebesar 0,000 (p<0,05). Simpulan: Pemberian edukasi kesehatan gigi dan mulut berbasis buku Braille pada penyandang tunanetra di SLB-A-TPA dan SLB Negeri   Jember berpengaruh terhadap peningkatan kebersihan gigi dan mulut.Kata kunci: Tunanetra, edukasi, Braille, kebersihan gigi dan mulut, OHI-S. ABSTRACTIntroduction: Visual impairment is a term used for the condition of a person who has a disturbance in the sense of sight. Physical limitations experienced by visually impaired individual make the knowledge regarding oral health difficult to obtain and tends to have a low level of oral hygiene. Therefore, a personal approach is needed so that the oral health knowledge and oral hygiene can be improved. This study was conducted to analyse the effect of Braille-based oral health education on the level of the visually impaired students’ oral hygiene. Methods: This research was pre-experimental research with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Research subjects were 18 students with a visual impairment from Special School-A TPA and Public Special School of Jember who were given education in the form of oral health manuals in the form of Braille books. Subjects were asked to maintain their oral hygiene by brushing their teeth twice a day for 21 days. Measurement of the oral hygiene level was carried out using the Green and Vermillion OHI-S index. Measurements were made on day 1 (evaluation 1) before being treated and trained in toothbrushes; day 10 (evaluation 2); and day 21 (evaluation 3). The data were analysed by the paired sample t-test parametric comparative analysis. Results: Data distribution was normal with p-value > 0.05 of (p = 0.200) (evaluation 1), 0.126 (evaluation 2), and 0.118 (evaluation 3). The counselling was conducted for ten days and had not reduced the OHI-S index, with a p-value of 0.317 (p > 0.05). Counselling then continued for 21 days and was able to reduce the OHI-S index with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Providing Braille books-based oral health education to visually impaired students in Special School-A TPA and Public Special School of Jember improving their oral hygiene.Keywords: Visual impairment, education, Braille, oral hygiene, OHI-S.

BACKGROUND New technologies create possible new ways of action, interaction, and learning which is extremely relevant in the field of oral health education. There is a lack of protocol in using an immersive interactive ludic-educational interface to motivate oral hygiene practice in children by means of augmented reality. OBJECTIVE This study aims to present a protocol on the development of a serious game to motivate oral hygiene practice in children. METHODS A serious game will be designed by augmented reality techniques to improve toothbrushing effectiveness of children aged 6 to 10 years. The functional structure of this interface is activated by means of movements recognized by Kinect (Microsoft Corp). The toothbrushing technique will be available in the game, enabling the children to execute the movement in the virtual environment. By identifying errors, this game will be tailored to improve the oral health of children by correcting the technique and teaching the user the adequate toothbrushing method. A template analysis will be performed to identify barriers and facilitators in each scenario. RESULTS After the implementation of the virtual interactive and immersive panels, enrollment will begin and evaluations will be made by means of questionnaires distributed to participants who interact with the game. Thus, an analysis of the product efficacy will be conducted. The expected outcome will be to obtain a digital instrument to motivate oral hygiene practice and enhance health awareness in children. CONCLUSIONS The serious game will support the prevention of oral diseases by sharing scientific research in the school environment and community. INTERNATIONAL REGISTERED REPORT PRR1-10.2196/10987
