ntroduction: Skin appearance plays as an important moderator in human daily social interactions so everyday we see new and innovative solutions to fight the signs of aging. One of the important parameters of skin appearance is skin complexion radiance as it could Reflect the general health, emotional State, hormonal status, nutrition, fatigue, age or environmental factors such as smoking, drinking, seasons, etc. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of the daily application of a bi-phasic serum during 8 weeks on the skin radiance and skin aging parameters of healthy women with dull complexion. Subjects and method: 30 healthy female volunteers of 35 to 60 years old were enrolled in the study. The activated product (aquaserum and liposerum) were applied to the face, twice a day for 8 weeks. The evaluation was performed on T0 and T8 weeks by measuring the skin radiance using clinical scoring C.L.B.T.TM and Glossymeter® GL200, Crow’s feet wrinkles by Bazin visual perioral scale, skin elasticity by Cutometer® SM575, and also the subject’s self-assessment. Results: All 30 subjects finished the study without any serious adverse events. The results revealed a significant improvement in all C.L.B.T.TM indicators presenting skin radiance through an increase of Luminosity (29%), Transparency (28%), Brightness (27%) (p=0.001) while a decrease of Pink Red (38%), Olive (31%), Beige (30%), Light Pink (21%) parameters (p<0.001).For skin relief, statistical analyses revealed a significant decrease of wrinkles’ depth evaluated by clinical scoring (9%, p=0.003). For the elasticity, an improvement which tends to be significant (0.462±0.098 at T0 and 0.506±0.111 at T8 weeks; p=0.06) for the Ur/Ue parameter, was observed.After 8 weeks of topical application of Perfectil® Twin-Serum, the subjects significantly found that their skin is less dull (p=0.002), less red (p=0.002), with less spots (p=0.044), less sagging (p=0.002) and less wrinkles (p=0.002). Conclusion: The results observed in this trial show that 8 weeks of Perfectil® Twin Serum use provide beneficial effect on skin radiance and skin surface relief (wrinkle depth). The action of the bi-phasic product may have a positive effect on the immediate penetration of the product which should be evaluated through the further studies. Furthermore, the ingredients seem to restore the skin lipidic layer, which explains its protective effect during winter time.

Abstract Objectives The aim of the study intended to correlate the effects of the dietary supplement, BioCell Collagen, with any changes associated with skin aging, since dietary supplements claim cutaneous anti-aging properties for their products; however, research supporting these claims remains sparse. Methods A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 128 female subjects, aged 39–59 (50.57 ± 5.55) randomly assigned to treatment or placebo. Intervention: Twice daily oral administration of a supplement containing 500 mg of a naturally occurring matrix of collagen type-II peptides, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate, derived from chicken sternal cartilage, or placebo. Primary outcome measures: trans-epidermal water loss, viscoelasticity, hydration, collagen content, chromophore (melanin) content and hemoglobin level, and photographic analysis. Expert visual grading for facial lines/wrinkles, crow's feet lines/wrinkles, skin texture/smoothness, and skin tone. Secondary outcomes: Tolerance and incidence of adverse events. Presence of erythema and/or dryness determined tolerance. Participant's perception of the product's value. Results Dietary supplementation significantly reduced facial lines and wrinkles (p = 0.019), crow's feet lines/wrinkles (p = 0.05), increased skin elasticity (p = 0.05), cutaneous collagen content (p = 0.001), and improved indicators of youthful skin appearance and wrinkle width (p = 0.046), and decreased skin dryness and erythema, compared to placebo. There was no difference between supplement and placebo for skin surface water content or retention. Supplement was well tolerated with no reported adverse reactions. Conclusions Dietary supplementation of this chicken sternal cartilage extract supports the accumulation of types-I/III collagen in skin to promote increased elasticity and reduced skin wrinkling in women 39 to 59 years of age. Thirteen students in a graduate-level course on Historical and Policy Perspectives in Higher Education held face-to-face and online discussions on five controversial topics: Diversity, Academic Freedom, Political Tolerance, Affirmative Action, and Gender. Students read materials on each topic and generated questions for discussion that were categorized by Bloom’s taxonomy so that the level of questions in the two discussion settings would be closely parallel. Upon completion of each discussion, they answered questions that addressed depth and length of the discussion, ability to remember, and a self-assessment of how the student learned. Students’ assessments show a consistent preference for the face-to-face discussion but a small number of students preferred the online setting. However, what is perhaps more interesting is a minority of approximately one-third of the students who perceived no difference between the settings, or that the two settings were perhaps complementary.

Abstract Background Our understanding of the functional anatomy of the face is constantly improving. To date, it is unclear whether the anatomic location of the line of ligaments has any functional importance during normal facial movements such as smiling. Objectives It is the objective of the present study to identify differences in facial movements between the medial and lateral midface by means of skin vector displacement analyses derived from 3D imaging and to further ascertain whether the line of ligaments has both a structural and functional significance in these movements. Methods The study sample consisted of 21 healthy volunteers (9 females & 12 males) of Caucasian ethnic background with a mean age of 30.6 (8.3) years and a mean BMI of 22.57 (2.5) kg/m 2. 3D images of the volunteers’ faces in repose and during smiling (Duchenne type) were taken. 3D imaging-based skin vector displacement analyses were conducted. Results The mean horizontal skin displacement was 0.08 (2.0) mm in the medial midface (lateral movement) and was -0.08 (1.96) mm in the lateral midface (medial movement) (p = 0.711). The mean vertical skin displacement (cranial movement of skin toward the forehead/temple) was 6.68 (2.4) mm in the medial midface whereas it was 5.20 (2.07) mm in the lateral midface (p = 0.003). Conclusions The results of this study provide objective evidence for an antagonistic skin movement between the medial and the lateral midface. The functional boundary identified by 3D imaging corresponds to the anatomic location of the line of ligaments.

To investigate the clinical effects of EH0202, a Japanese herbal supplement, on the menopausal symptoms and physical status of peri- and post-menopausal women. Thirty-two post-menopausal women (53.0±5.1 years) presented with menopausal complaints were enrolled in the clinical study. Patients were administered an herbal supplement, EH0202 (6 g/day for 6 months), and were assessed for improvement of their overall symptoms using the Greene Climacteric Scale and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Blood pressure, skin surface blood flow and plasma lipid profiles were measured before and 1, 3 and 6 months after EH0202 administration. There was a significant decrease in the climacteric scale score (P<0.001) and VAS (P<0.0001) after 6 months of EH0202 treatment. There was a significant decrease in systolic (P<0.001) and diastolic (P<0.05) blood pressure, and a significant decrease in facial skin surface blood flow (P<0.05) after 3 months of EH0202 administration. We observed a significant decrease in plasma TG and LDL-cholesterol concentrations after 3 months of EH0202 administration (P<0.05). EH0202 (MACH) reduced blood pressure, excess facial skin blood flow (flushing) and abnormal lipid levels, as well as clinically improved menopausal symptoms in post-menopausal women. In post-menopausal women, this product appears to help maintain normal biological function and improves quality of life.

Digoxin has a narrow therapeutic index, such as complicated pharmacokinetics and dynamics.  Many drug interactions may occur when the administration of one drug alters the clinical effects of another. As a result, digoxin toxicity can be a common condition within clinical settings that might lead to the development of many morbidities and even mortality. Many studies were published to investigate the efficacy and safety of different management modalities to enhance the outcomes that follow digoxin administration. The aim of the study was to discuss the approaches to systematically treat and prevent the development of cardiac digoxin toxicity. The findings are based on evidence from previous studies in the literature. To be specific, Fab fragments are the most effective modalities that can be used to treat severe cases within ideal periods. However, evidence regarding their administration for asymptomatic or mild cases is still poor regarding the cost-efficacy and the development of serious adverse events. Physicians should primarily care for a better intervention as it is usually associated with a significantly more enhanced prognosis and clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, adequate monitoring of the patients and evaluation of their personal and medical history are important steps in the process, and further approaches are still needed. Also, detailed information about our intended outcomes is furtherly discussed within the manuscript.

A call for the integration of research experiences into all biology curricula has been a major goal for educational reform efforts nationally. Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) have been the predominant method of accomplishing this, but their associated costs and complex design can limit their wide adoption. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced programs to identify unique ways to still provide authentic research experiences while students were virtual. We report here a full guide for the successful implementation of a semester-long virtual CURE that uses Drosophila behavioral assays to explore the connection between pain and addiction with the use of a "lab-in-a-box" sent home to students. Individual components were piloted across three semesters and launched as a 100-level introductory course with 19 students. We found that this course increased science identity and successfully improved key research competencies as per the Undergraduate Research Student Self-Assessment (URSSA) survey. This course is ideal for flipped classrooms ranging from introductory biology to upper-level neuroscience courses and can be integrated directly into the lecture period without the need for building a new course. Given the low cost, recent comfort with virtual learning environments, and the current proliferation of flipped biology classrooms following the 2020 pandemic, this curriculum could serve as an ideal project-based active-learning tool for equitably increasing access to authentic research experiences.

Over the past two and a half decades, techniques for midfacial rejuvenation have evolved. Midfacial rejuvenation has gained significant popularity among many aesthetic surgeons, including the ophthalmic plastic surgeon. Yet rejuvenation of the midface remains a challenge for the aesthetic surgeon who seeks facial harmony. A variety of techniques and approaches are available, yet no single approach is ideal for all patients. It is clear that the age-related anatomic alterations that cause patients to seek rejuvenation vary from patient to patient, and that many patients have more than one anatomic alteration that must be addressed to rejuvenate the lower lid. The surgeon must address the individual needs of each patient for optimal results. It has also become clear that the lower eyelid and midface form a continuum that needs to be addressed in its entirety for optimal rejuvenation. To achieve this, the surgeon must understand the basic concepts important to lower eyelid and midface rejuvenation, which include an understanding of eyelid and midfacial anatomy, an understanding of aging changes of the lower eyelid and midface, and surgical approaches and nonincisional options. A full understanding of aging changes in the lower eyelid and midface is essential to successfully address midfacial rejuvenation. A harmonious facial appearance consists of a balanced relationship among all tissues of the face. With age, disturbance of this harmony among midfacial tissues occurs. The aging process of the midface encompasses the lower eyelid, malar fat pad and associated structures, melolabial fold, and lateral perioral region. Hester describes four important features of midfacial aging: (1) baring of the inferior orbital rim with creation of a hollow valley at the junction of the lower eyelid and cheek; (2) descent of the malar fat pad, with loss of malar prominence; (3) deepening of the tear trough; and (4) exaggeration of the nasolabial fold. The midface represents a crucial aesthetic unit of the face. It is bordered by structures that play major roles in the overall appearances of the face. The lower eyelid and tear trough toward the nose and the lateral canthus and crow’s feet at the superior lateral aspect frame the midface superiorly.

BACKGROUND: The use of nutraceuticals has become frequent in the cutaneous approach to photoaging. OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical efficacy of a nutraceutical product composed of lycopene, acerola extract, grape seed extract and Biomarine ComplexT in photoaged human skin. METHODS: 50 women, from 35 to 60 years of age, phototypes I to III, were assessed. For 120 days, they associated the nutraceutical product with the use of a sunscreen FPS15. On days 0 (D0), 30 (D30), 60 (D60), 90 (D90) and 120 (D120) they were evaluated and underwent Medical Assessments and Self-Assessment and cutaneous biometric analyses (corneometry, sebumetry and pH-metry) in the skin of the left zygomatic region and the upper medial side region of the left arm; on days 0 (D0), 30 (D30) and 120 (D120) the skin of the same regions was analyzed by ultrasound. On days 0 (D0) and 120 (D120) skin biopsies were performed in the areas where instrumental evaluation was performed (to evaluate collagen and elastic fibers). RESULTS: There was an improvement of the general status of the skin of all volunteers by the Medical and Volunteer Self- Assessments; increased parameters of cutaneous hydration, reduction of pH, increasing of ultrasound density and a histological increment of collagen and elastic fibers (both on the face and arm); there was a reduction of seborrhea (only on the face) CONCLUSIONS: The daily use of a nutraceutical product containing lycopene, acerola extract, grape seed extract and Biomarine ComplexT showed an important adjuvant effect to counteract skin photoaging.

Moxibustion therapy has been used in East Asian medicine for more than a thousand years. However, there are some problems associated with this therapy in clinical practice. These problems include lack of control over the treatment temperature, emission of smoke, and uneven temperature distribution over the treatment region. In order to resolve these problems, we developed a precise temperature-control device for use as an alternate for conventional moxibustion therapy. In this paper, we describe the treatment of a single patient with paralytic ileus that was treated with moxibustion. We also describe an evaluation of temperature distribution on the skin surface after moxibustion therapy, the development of a heat-transfer control device (HTCD), an evaluation of the HTCD, and the clinical effects of treatment using the HTCD. The HTCD we developed can heat the skin of the treatment region uniformly, and its effect may be equivalent to conventional moxibustion, without the emission of smoke and smell. This device can be used to treat ileus, abdominal pain, and coldness of abdomen in place of conventional moxibustion in modern hospitals.

Today’s climate crisis provokes dystopian and utopian narratives of the future faced by humanity. To navigate the theological terrain between the present and an uncertain future, this article explores passages pertaining to the journey of Moses and the Israelites to the Promised Land. The guiding point of orientation for this exploration comes from a verse that captures the seeming powerlessness of the Israelites in the face of the giants inhabiting the Promised Land. Numbers 13:33 reads, “To ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” Of crucial importance in coming to terms with such honest self-assessment is the period of discernment and growth that comes from being in the wilderness with the presence of a God who loves and empowers grasshoppers in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Because the future of the Body of Christ is inseparable from how the climate crisis is confronted, the journey through the wilderness becomes not merely a story for self-coping but rather a story about churches finding a way forward, even as some dystopian narratives place churches on the road to irrelevance and ultimately extinction. This article explores how the story of exodus provides a sacred ground for imagining a different, even if difficult, future.
