The Division of Graduate Medicine, Tulane University School of Medicine, will sponsor a postgraduate course in immunology and allergy in pediatrics on February 12-16, 1962. In response to repeated requests by previous registrants, this "subspecialty course" for pediatricians has been planned to provide comprehensive instruction in the fundamentals of immunology, with their application to practical clinical diagnosis and management of the "common" allergic disorders as well as various other diseases with conspicuous immunologic relationships. As usual, instruction will consist of lectures, amphitheatre clinics, ward rounds and round table conferences, with participation of many faculty members from all related and pertinent disciplines.

The Leader in Medicine (LIM) Program of the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, hosted its 7th Annual LIM Research Symposium on October 30, 2015 and participation grew once again, with a total of six oral and 99 posters presentations! Over 45 of our Faculty members also participated in the symposium. This year’s LIM Symposium theme was “Innovations in Medicine” and the invited guest speaker was our own Dr. Breanne Everett (MD/MBA). She completed her residency in plastic surgery at University of Calgary and holds both a medical degree and an MBA from the University of Calgary. In her inspiring talk, entitled “Marrying Business and Medicine: Toe-ing a Fine Line”, she described how she dealt with a clinical problem (diabetic foot ulcers), came up with an innovation that optimized patient care, started her own company and delivered her product to market to enhance the health of the community. She clearly illustrated how to complete the full circle, from identifying a clinical problem to developing and providing a solution that both enhances clinical care and patient health as well as reduces health care costs and hospital admissions. The research symposium was an outstanding success and the abstracts are included in companion article in CIM.

Intraosseous ganglion cyst of the lunate is an uncommon lesion and cause of wrist pain. Histopathologically it is identical to the common dorsal wrist ganglion and treatment by arthrotomy, curettage of the ganglion and bone graft resulted in clinical improvement in nine patients, six of whom became symptom-free.

Heart failure is a clinical syndrome, resulting in increased intracardiac pressure and/or decreased cardiac output under rest or stress. In acute decompensated heart failure, volume assessment is essential for clinical diagnosis and management. More and more evidence shows the advantages of bioimpedance vector analysis in this issue. Here, we critically present a brief review of bioimpedance vector analysis in the prediction and management of heart failure to give a reference to clinical physicians and guideline makers.

The first edition of the ECA European Crystallography School (ECS1), to be held in Pavia (Italy) during the course of IYCr2014, has found good balance between two apparently diverging goals: (i) to help students and young researchers to find their way in modern science, while keeping a special focus on the molecular and crystalline structure to interpret properties and functionality of materials; (ii) to raise the social and academic awareness of the great advances that crystallography has allowed and will allow to many branches of sciences. Students may choose between two formulae, i.e. a 6-day course with lectures and hands-on sessions held by renowned scientists, covering the state-of-the-art of crystallographic methods, theories and applications, at the same time indicating their future perspectives and cutting-edge aspects, or a 10-day Erasmus Intensive Programme, including a 3-day preparatory course and granting 3 ECTS credits. IYCr2014 is a unique opportunity to stimulate and ignite widespread interest in crystallography; therefore, some frontier seminars will be open to University faculty members, students, and to the general public. Efforts will be made to create a nice and friendly environment, with the goal to provide chances for future collaborations. Students will be invited to bring a poster showing their research results, projects or scientific interests. This will allow students to discuss their ideas with experienced crystallographers and favour aggregation. The programme received good support from scientific institutions and vendors, and a great response from the students: more than 110 pre-registrations from 33 countries were already received at the time this abstract was prepared, showing that there is a real need for both fundamental and advanced teaching in crystallography. We hope that this format will be continued and improved so as to provide a stable, periodic rendezvous for students and researchers under the common theme of crystallography.

The plan for the Round table session was to focus on organizational and social/cultural differences between librarians and faculty with the aim to increase our awareness of the differences when we try to find ways to cooperate within the academy or school. This may help us to sort things out, experience acceptance and take adequate actions, saving energy and perhaps be less frustrated.  The questions that the workshop addressed were: What is in the gap between librarians and faculty when dealing with information literacy? How can we fill the gap? Participants discussed this in detail with the aim of together finding ways to understand it better and make it possible to find ways to fill this gap. By defining it and thereby making it easier to work out a strategy for future action to improve the teaching of information literacy, including listing possible, impossible or nearly impossible ways. The springboard to the discussion was extracted from some projects that the workshop leader has been engaged in since 2009. The first example is a research circle where Uppsala University Library used action research to observe and understand the process when we had the opportunity to implement information literacy classes with progression in an undergraduate program. What worked well? What did not? Why? This work was described together with other examples from Uppsala University to an international panel working with quality issues. What did they think of our work? May this change the ways we are working? How? Another example is an ongoing joint project where librarians and faculty members are trying to define ways to increase the cooperation between the library and faculty and make this cooperation sustainable. Recent experience from this was brought to the discussion.   There are an overwhelming number of papers written in this field. A few papers have inspired these ideas. One article in particular: Christiansen, L., Stombler, M. & Thaxton, L. (2004). A report on librarian-faculty relations from a sociological perspective. The journal of academic librarianship, 30(2), 116-121.   The method that was used was to: 1. Present these broad areas/challenges for the group to agree on or add another area 2. Discuss these challenges one at a time, and for each one identify specific aspects to pursue farther, using post-it notes 3. Make a summary of the different aspects to help and inspire further action.

MEDICAL SCIENCE COURSE: University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine announces a correlated basic medical science course for the fall of 1970. The program, of one semester duration designed to provide a background in the basic sciences, lasts 15 weeks and includes 3 hours per day of formal teaching by senior faculty members and 4 hours per day of clinical teaching by discipline (medicmne, surgery, physical medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, gastroenterology, and dermatology.) This course affords a unique opportunity to participate in an informative and stimulating full time, full semester program directed to the clinical correlation of the basic sciences in a medical practice setting.
