The article presents the analysis of the Associations of Gardeners of Lithuania, the undergoing changes in their territories. Since the establishment of the amateur gardening comprising 56 associations, there has been a tendency of privatizing a great number of agricultural land parcels owned by the amateur gardeners; the traditional gardening tends to be substituted for a single family housing. The objective of the article is to discuss the current situation in the territories allocated for the amateur gardens, to point out the tendencies of their future development taking into consideration different regions of the country and to assess the problems concerning land usage and management. The associations of gardeners comprise 216932 individual gardeners; they manage 228673 land parcels owned by them, which totally occupy 20714 ha. The major part of the land allocated for the associations of gardeners is the privatized land by the members of the associations, i.e. the territory makes 70.4 %. The survey of the experts of the municipalities on the current state of the territories of the amateur gardens and the assessment of the particular locations of gardens, presented the results, which confirm that the majority of the associations of gardeners failed their main purpose and new development tendencies appeared depending on their geographical location. The associations of gardeners has come across with a great number of problems on territorial planning, engineering communication services, and services maintaining the needs of the associations, the expansion as well as development of these areas.

This study confirmed the general belief of urban planners that mixed land use promotes walking in Seoul, a metropolis in East Asia, by analyzing the effect of mixed land use on the travel mode choice of housewives and unemployed people who make non-commuting trips on weekdays. Using binomial logistic regression of commuting data, it was found that the more mixed a neighborhood environment’s uses are, the more the pedestrians prefer to walk rather than drive. The nonlinear relationship between the land use mix index and the choice to walk was also confirmed. Although mixed land use in neighborhoods increased the probability of residents choosing walking over using cars, when the degree of complexity increased above a certain level, the opposite effect was observed. As the density of commercial areas increased, the probability of selecting walking increased. In addition to locational characteristics, income and housing type were also major factors affecting the choice to walk; i.e., when the residents’ neighborhood environment was controlled for higher income and living in an apartment rather than multi-family or single-family housing, they were more likely to choose driving over walking.

AbstractDespite harsh climate, agriculture on the northern margins of Russia still remains the backbone of food security. Historically, in both regions studied in this article – the Republic of Karelia and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) – agricultural activities as dairy farming and even cropping were well adapted to local conditions including traditional activities such as horse breeding typical for Yakutia. Using three different sources of information – official statistics, expert interviews, and field observations – allowed us to draw a conclusion that there are both similarities and differences in agricultural development and land use of these two studied regions. The differences arise from agro-climate conditions, settlement history, specialization, and spatial pattern of economy. In both regions, farming is concentrated within the areas with most suitable natural conditions. Yet, even there, agricultural land use is shrinking, especially in Karelia. Both regions are prone to being affected by seasonality, but vary in the degree of its influence. Geographical location plays special role, and weaknesses caused by remoteness to some extent become advantage as in Yakutia. Proximity effect is controversial. In Karelia, impact of neighboring Finland is insignificant compared with the nearby second Russian city – Saint Petersburg.

In this paper, we perform a literature review on the current state of knowledge about homeowners in the context of the adoption of renewable heating systems. Despite a considerable number of studies about homeowners, homeowner–installer interactions, and ways to improve the effectiveness of renewable heating programs, based on homeowner knowledge, have not yet been studied in much detail. To address these knowledge gaps, we conduct a qualitative study on single-family house owners who installed heat pumps and took part in a renewable heating program in Geneva, Switzerland. We cover homeowner practices in choosing installers and heating system types, homeowners’ feedback about heat pump installation and use, as well as their experience in participation in the renewable heating program. Based on the literature review and the findings from the interviews, we provide the following recommendations on how to increase the effectiveness of renewable heating programs: (a) support for homeowners should not be limited to financial incentives; (b) partnership programs with installers could help to increase the quality of installation services and enable homeowners to choose qualified installers; and (c) assisting homeowners in pre-qualification and ex-post analysis, in learning how to operate their renewable heating systems and in solving problems during the post-installation period, can contribute to improved technology reputation, which can, in turn, increase technology uptake by other homeowners.

One of the most urgent tasks of economic geography in the article is to ensure the sustainable development of the Jabrayil region on new foundations, whose economic and social facilities, which have been under occupation for many years, have been completely destroyed. The initial data collected on the objects destroyed in the area as a result of the analysis and their geographical location can be used as substantive information in the reconstruction activities of the district. As a result of the analysis, the existing potential in the region: favorable transport, new Zangilan and Fizuli centers in the neighborhood, sand, cement raw materials, fertile lands, canals, rivers, hydropower and solar resources will have a significant impact on the rehabilitation and development of farms. As a result of the research, the optimal centers for the location of "smart villages" in the region were identified. The article will focus on the development of local and global transport routes through the region, the use of local mineral deposits and the effective organization of internal and external relations. The information obtained as a result of the research will allow to build the perspective territorial planning of the regional economy on the basis of existing standards. Key words: consequences of occupation, advantages of reconstructed forms of economy, substantiation of centers, features of distribution in the area
