AbstractThree distinct paragenetic and compositional types of tourmaline were described from the Velence Granite and the surrounding contact slate. Rare, pitch-black, disseminated tourmaline I (intragranitic tourmaline) occurs in granite, pegmatite, and aplite; very rare, black to greenish-gray, euhedral tourmaline II (miarolitic tourmaline) occurs in miarolitic cavities of the pegmatites; abundant, black to gray, brown to yellow or even colorless, acicular tourmaline III (metasomatic tourmaline) occurs in the contact slate and its quartz-tourmaline veins. Tourmaline from a variety of environments exhibits considerable variation in composition, which is controlled by the nature of the host rock and the formation processes. However, in similar geologic situations, the composition of tourmaline can be rather uniform, even between relatively distant localities. Tourmaline I is represented by an Al-deficient, Fe3+-bearing schorl, which crystallized in a closed melt-aqueous fluid system. Tourmaline II is a schorl-elbaite mixed crystal, which precipitated from Li- and F-enriched solutions in the cavities of pegmatites. Tourmaline III shows an oscillatory zoning; its composition corresponds to schorl, dravite, and foitite species. It formed from metasomatizing fluids derived from the granite. This is the most abundant tourmaline type, which can be found in the contact slate around the granite.

AbstractThe mildy peralkaline Eikeren-Skrim granite belongs to the Permian magmatic province of the Oslo rift, south-east Norway. Euhedral quartz crystals from the abundant miarolitic cavities contain primary inclusions of partly crytallized silicate melts and coexisting primary, aqueous fluid inclusions. Micro-thermometric measurements give maximum estimates for the granite solidus of 685–705°C. Quenched silicate melt inclusions are not peralkaline, have normative Or/Ab weight ratios of 1.15–1.44 (compared to 0.49–0.80 in whole-rock samples) and F and Cl contents of 0.1 and 0.21–0.65 wt. %, respectively. Coexisting magmatic fluid inclusions are highly enriched in Na, Cl, S and to some extent K. These chemical characteristics are the results of late-magmatic melt-mineral-fluid interaction in the miarolitic cavities.

At the Cheever Mine, located in the eastern Adirondack Mountains of the Mesoproterozoic Grenville Province, iron oxide-apatite ore forms a narrow (<3 m) sheet cross-cutting metasomatically altered, magnetite-bearing, albite-rich leucogranitic host rocks of the Lyon Mountain Granite suite. Zircon from the ore and five samples of country rock were dated by Laser Ablation-Multi-Collector-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. The ore yielded a Concordia age of 1033.6 ± 2.9 Ma while three samples of host rock yielded ages of 1036.3 ± 2.9, 1040 ± 11, and 1043.9 ± 4.1 Ma. Two additional samples of host rock yielded older ages of 1059.6 ± 3.4 and 1066.0 ± 6.3 Ma and contain zircon xenocrystic cores with 207Pb/206Pb ages up to 1242 Ma. The zircons analyzed, including those separated from the ore, have characteristics typically associated with an igneous origin including size, shape, inclusions, oscillatory zoning, typical chondrite-normalized REE patterns, U contents, and U/Th ratios. This data establishes the age of the ore and alteration and a temporal, and likely genetic, connection between the ore and members of the Lyon Mountain Granite suite. A model invoking melting of Shawinigan country rocks, magmatic differentiation, and long-lived magmatic and metasomatic input along extensional fault conduits is proposed for the ore’s genesis. At the Cheever Mine, magmatic hydrothermal fluids and/or post-intrusion alteration appears not to have had a major impact on zircon, which preserves original U-Pb systematics.

Four fluid migration events were recorded during the Alpine metamorphism in the Sopron micaschist from the Grob gneiss series of the Lower Austroalpine Unit of the Eastern Alps near Sopron, using mineral chemistry data, geothermo-barometry and fluid inclusion studies.1. Tourmaline mineralisation in quartz veins and to some extent in the host rock. Similar mineral compositions in the quartz-tourmaline veins and in the host rock show equilibrium between fluid and the host rock. Geothermo-barometry gives 560-610oC temperature and 950-1230 MPa pressure for the formation of quartz-tourmaline veins which is the same as the determined P-T peak (T=560 and 600°C p= 840-1230 MPa).2. Fluids causing Mg-metasomatism in the shear zones. The result of this fluid invasion was the formation of leucophyllite in the shear zones and Mg-enrichment of some minerals (chlorite, muscovite, garnet) in the close vicinity of the shear zone. The effect of this fluid was confined to the shear zones and the neighbouring host rock.3. The rock was infiltrated along the shear zones and quartz veins with CO2-bearing hypersaline fluids during retrograde metamorphism. The presence of this fluid is evidenced by secondary CO2 inclusions and hypersaline aqueous fluid inclusions ± CO2. The aqueous fluid had high concentrations of Na, Ca, Fe, Al, Cl and contained moderate amounts of Mg, Zn, Ti, K, Mn, S and P. This fluid was the carrier of the REE and Th and locally precipitated florencite, monazite, allanite, apatite, thorite and thorianite in the shear zone. Traces of this mineralisation are found in quartz-tourmaline veins, postdating the tourmaline mineralisation.4. Late retrograde metamorphic fluid represented by two phase (liquid+vapor) aqueous inclusions of the NaCl-CaCl2-H2O system with total salinity between 25 and 28.5% and homogenisation temperatures between 229.6 and 322oC

Abstract. Two experiments tested the hypothesis that self-evaluation can serve as a source of interpersonal attitudes. In the first study, self-evaluation was manipulated by means of false feedback. A subsequent learning phase demonstrated that the co-occurrence of the self with another individual influenced the evaluation of this previously neutral target. Whereas evaluative self-target similarity increased under conditions of negative self-evaluation, an opposite effect emerged in the positive self-evaluation group. A second study replicated these findings and showed that the difference between positive and negative self-evaluation conditions disappeared when a load manipulation was applied. The implications of self-evaluation for attitude formation processes are discussed.

This paper explores beginning dietetic practitioners’ perspectives on the process of becoming dietetics professionals through the use of vignettes to illuminate the complex process of professional socialization.  Embedded in these vignettes are three themes related to the socialization process that occurs in the early years of dietetic practice: congruence, resilience, and relationships.  Our findings indicate that new dietitians struggle to develop their dietitian identity.  They feel unprepared for the relational and practice realities of the workplace and find the transition from dietetic intern to dietitian challenging.  They seek many ways to cope including seeking support from others and planning for the future but some consider leaving the profession.  It is important to understand the professional socialization and identity formation processes that occur during the early years of practice to ensure that dietitians feel prepared and supported as they begin their careers.

For many decades there has been a consensus among linguists of various schools that derivational suffixes function not only to determine the word-class of the complex expressions they form, but also convey semantic information. The aspect of suffix-inherent meaning is ignored by representatives of a relatively new theoretical direction – Neo-Construction Grammar – who consider derivational suffixes to be either purely functional elements of the grammar or meaningless phonological realizations of abstract grammatical morphemes. The latter view is maintained by adherents of Distributed Morphology, who at the same time emphasize the importance of conceptual knowledge for derivational processes without attempting to define this aspect. The purpose of this study is first of all to provide support for the long-standing assumption that suffixes are inherently meaningful. The focus of interest is on the suffixes -ship, -dom and -hood. Data from Old English and Modern English (including neologisms) will show that these suffixes have developed rich arrays of meaning which cannot be structurally derived. Moreover, since conceptual knowledge is indeed an important factor for word-formation processes, a concrete, theory-independent model for the representation of the synchronically observable meaning components associated with -ship, -dom and -hood will be proposed.

This report presents the results of the excavation of a stone ford laid across the base of a small stream valley near Rough Castle, Falkirk. It was discovered during an opencast coal mining project. Radiocarbon dates and pollen analysis of deposits overlying the ford combine to indicate a date for its construction no later than the early first millennium cal BC. Interpreting this evidence was not straightforward and the report raises significant issues about site formation processes and the interpretation of radiocarbon and pollen evidence. The importance of these issues extends beyond the rarely investigated features such as fords and deserve a larger place in the archaeological literature.
