Use of growth analysis to describe the N fertiliser responses of maize ( Zea mays L.) hybrids

Using the classical and functional methods of growth analysis, the effect of mineral N fertiliser (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha −1 ) on the dynamics of growth and growth parameters was studied in 2001 and 2002 in a two-factorial, long-term experiment set up in a split-plot design on three maize hybrids with different genotypes, Mv 272 (FAO 280), Mv 355 (FAO 390) and Maraton (FAO 450). The following growth parameters were calculated to characterise the effect of N fertiliser: the absolute growth rate (AGR, ALGR), the relative growth rate (RGR), the leaf area index (LAI), the net assimilation rate (NAR) and the harvest index (HI).Similar tendencies were found for the yield response of maize and the values of the growth parameters as a function of N fertilisation. Based on the results of principal component analysis, multiple regression analysis and discriminant analysis, the parameters AGR, LAI max , ALGR and HI were found to have a decisive influence on the grain yield of maize. It could be concluded from the results that growth parameters can be used to predict the N fertiliser responses of maize in early growth stages.

A field study was conducted during the Rabi season of 2009-2010 in the research field of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Dhaka. Six levels of GA3, viz. 0, 30, 50, 70, 90 and 110 ppm were sprayed at 18 days after sowing (DAS). GA3 treatments significantly increased plant height than the control plants. GA3 with 30 to 90 ppm significantly increased number of branches and leaves, leaf area, leaf area index (LAI), leaf dry matter and total dry matter at different growth stages. GA3 at 30 to 70 ppm gradually increased crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) and declined advanced growth stages. Number of dry pods /plant, number of seeds /pod, 1000 seed weight, fresh fodder, fresh pod, dry seed yield and harvest index also significantly increased. One of the major objective of growth analysis data is to provide a basic understanding of some of the mechanisms that affect plant growth. This study was initiated to evaluate the effects on several growth parameters when plants are grown in an NFT system. Vine cuttings (15 cm length) of the sweetpotato cultivar ``Georgia Jet” was grown in a closed NFT system for a period of 120 days. Nutrient was supplied in a modified half-strength Hoagland's solution with a N:K ratio of 1:2.4. Destructive harvesting of plants occurred at 14 day intervals at which time plants were separated into their various component parts and analyzed for dry weight accumulation, leaf area index, crop growth rate, relative growth rate and net assimilation rate. Results showed dry weight distribution within the plant had a linear response for all component part evaluated. Greatest contributors to total plant dry weight was stem followed by leaves, fibrous roots, buds and flowers. However, once storage root production occurred it contributed the largest percentage to total plant dry weight. LAI was optimum at 80 days after planting (DAP) while CGR and RGR fluctuated throughout the growing season. Initially NAR was higher in foliage than storage roots but declined once storage root enlargement began, suggesting a translocation of assimilates to storage root.

AbstractThe growth of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L) is affected by genetic and environmental factors.  One of the environmental factors involved is growing space. Growing space related to each plant of areas occupied is stated by the distance between plants. A Research has been conducted as long three months in dry season with average daily temperature of 25 to 31OC on altitude of 25 to 500 meter, to determine the timing of the application of cutback technology based on an analysis of growth of jack bean plants (Canavalia ensiformis L) in different growth spaces.  The research was conducted in the trial form using a randomized block design. Variables of plants growth analysis observed is leaf area index (LAI), leaf area is computed by gravimetric method; net assimilation rate (NAR), and relative growth rate (RGR) is determined based on the dry weight of plants; in all three rooms grew, namely 75 cm x 100 cm (control), 75 cm × 75 cm and 75 cm × 50 cm, each repeated three times. The result shows that the trend of leaf area index increased at net assimilation rate (g-1.cm-2.week-1) and relative growth rate (g-1.g-1.minggu-1) decreasing at the time the plant to the age 8 weeks after planting.  The best time for the application of reduction technology to jack bean plants (Canavalia ensiformis L) in all tested growing spaces, is recommended when plants are between 7 and 8 weeks after planting

Summary Growth analysis helps explain the differences in yield and growth potential between cultivars in response to management practices and environmental conditions. The aim of the research was: (i) to investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the growth and growth parameters of different wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars and (ii) to study the relationship between yield and growth parameters at the individual plant and plant stand level. In the two-factorial, split-plot experiment, the main plot was the nitrogen (N) treatment and the sub-plot was the cultivar. In response to N fertilization, the values of growth rate parameters increased up to the N160 treatment. The mean values of crop growth rate (g m-2 day-1) in the treatments were as follows: N0: 10.4, N80: 15.4, N160: 17.2 and N240: 16.3. The leaf area index, leaf area duration and especially the duration of the flag-leaf gave a good reflection of the effect of N fertilization. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated the significant effect of growth rates, size and duration of leaf area, biomass distribution and yield components on the yield. The results showed that understanding the growth of plants is important for optimizing management decisions.

Growth parameters such as leaf area (LA), total dry mass (TDM) production, crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), and net assimilation rate (NAR) were compared in six varieties of mungbean under subtropical condition (24°8′ N 90°0′ E) to identify limiting growth characters for the efficient application of physiology breeding for higher yields. Results revealed that a relatively smaller portion of TDM was produced before flower initiation and the bulk of it after anthesis. The maximum CGR was observed during pod filling stage in all the varieties due to maximum leaf area (LA) development at this stage. Two plant characters such as LA and CGR contributed to the higher TDM production. Results indicated that high yielding mungbean varieties should possess larger LA, higher TDM production ability, superior CGR at all growth stages, and high relative growth rate and net assimilation rate at vegetative stage which would result in superior yield components.

Growth analysis is an appropriate method for plant response to various environmental and cultural conditions during plant life. A 2-year experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of soil tillage and fertilization on the growth and growth parameters of quinoa crop and to determine the association between yield and growth characteristics at both the single plant and crop stand level. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with two replicates, two main plots [conventional (CT) and minimum tillage (MT)] and four sub-plots [fertilization treatments: untreated, inorganic fertilization of 100 (N1) and 200 kg N ha-1 (N2) and sheep manure]. The highest absolute growth rate (AGR) and crop growth rate (CGR) values were recorded between the middle of vegetative growth stage and the beginning of anthesis (50-75 DAS) under conventional tillage coupled with manure (AGR: 0.4577 g day-1, CGR: 11.44 g m-2 day-1) and with N2 treatment (AGR: 0.4521 g day-1, CGR: 11.31 g m-2 day-1). Concerning specific leaf area (SLA), the highest value (150.58 cm2 g-1) was found at 75 DAS in N2 treatment. Leaf area index (LAI) were positively affected by soil tillage and fertilization with greatest values found under conventional tillage coupled with N2 treatment (5.110 m2 m-2). The highest seed yield was observed in N2 treatment (2488 and 2388 kg ha-1 under CT and MT, respectively). As a conclusion, the cultivation under conventional tillage and the increasing levels of applied nitrogen up to 200 kg N ha-1 increases crop growth and yield.   ********* In press - Online First. The assumed comparative losses of horse purslane’s (vern. It sit) losses relative to other weeds are higher. The study was conducted during summer season 2018 at Research Farm Muhammad Nawa Sharif University of Agriculture, Multan, Pakistan on a field having high infestation history of horse purslane. Study was carried out in a RCBD with three replications. Experiment consisted of ten treatments viz: weeds free (whole season), horse purslane free till 20 Days after emergence (DAE), horse purslane free till 40 DAE, horse purslane free till 60 DAE, all weeds free 20 DAE, all weeds free 40 DAE, all weeds free 60 DAE, weedy check (all weeds), weedy check except horse purslane and weedy check containing only horse purslane. The data showed the maximum yield and yield related parameters like plant height (178.49 cm), cob weight (27.88 g), cob length (28.72 cm), stover yield (10.20 t ha-1), kernel yield (6.86 t ha-1) and growth parameters like crop growth rate, leaf area index, leaf area duration and net assimilation rate in weeds free (whole season). In treatment (horse purslane free 40 DAE) kernel yield was higher as compared to treatments such as horse purslane free 20 DAE and 40 DAE. As the interference duration increased over 45 days after emergence, significant reduction in yield and growth of maize was observed. It can be concluded that farmers should control horse purslane within first 45 days in maize field.

Leaf area index (LAI), leaf area duration (LAD), crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and above ground dry matter accumulation (AGDM) of a cultivar of chickpea (Cicer arietenum) were studied with the application of potassium naphthenate (KNap) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) as foliar spray in 2001-2002. The growth regulators had greater influence on plants which showed comparable values of LAI, LAD, CGR, NAR and TDM over control plants. Out of the growth regulator treatment, 1500 ppm KNap produced 26.7 to 37.5% more TDM at different stages of growth than those of control, and it was superior to other treatments with NAA. Other growth parameters also increased following 1500 ppm KNap treatment. LAI, CGR, NAR and AGDM had a significant linear relationship with seed yield. In sugar cane, investigations made earlier (Singh & Gururaja Rao, 1985) have shown that high-yielding varieties have higher net assimilation rate than low-yielding types. Similarly, differences in progeny means for relative growth rate and net assimilation rate have been reported by George (1965). In other crops also, varietal differences in leaf area index and net assimilation rate have been reported (Watson, 1947). It appears that in this crop, limited attempts have been made to study all the growth characteristics. This paper describes the differences in most of the growth characteristics in six sugar-cane varieties.

The Study was conducted to evaluate the effect of solid and liquid organic fertilizer on growth and yield of rosselle in 2016 cropping season at Institute of Agricultural Reserve Zaria, Samaru (11011’N 07038E and 686m) and Institute of Horticultural Research Farm Bagauda (12000’N 8031”Em 488m) in Northern Guinea Savannah and Sudan Savannah Ecological Zones of above sea level Nigeria. Treatments consisted of four levels of solid poultry manure (0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0) tons/ha and five levels of liquid organic manure from Grand Total Organic Fertilizer Limited (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.9) litres/ha, which were factorially combined in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated three times. Data on growth parameter were collected on plant height (cm), plant dry weight (g), leaf Area index crop growth rate (CGR) Relative Growth Rate (RGR) and Net assimilation rate (NAR) while data on yield parameters like number of calyx per pant, 100 seed weight (g) and  calyx yield per hectare kg/ha were collected. Results showed that plant height, plant dry weight(g), 100 seed weight(g) and calyx dry yield kg/ha had a significant increase with application of 2.0 litres/ha of liquid fertilizer than other rates. While application of solid poultry manure at 3.0ton/ha significantly increases plant height, net assimilation rate, leaf area index and calyx dry weight when compared with other rates. From the results obtained, the combination of 2.0 litres/ha liquid organic fertilizer and 3.0 ton/ha solid poultry manure produce the highest calyx yield at both location.
