Leaf area index (LAI), leaf area duration (LAD), crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and above ground dry matter accumulation (AGDM) of a cultivar of chickpea (Cicer arietenum) were studied with the application of potassium naphthenate (KNap) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) as foliar spray in 2001-2002. The growth regulators had greater influence on plants which showed comparable values of LAI, LAD, CGR, NAR and TDM over control plants. Out of the growth regulator treatment, 1500 ppm KNap produced 26.7 to 37.5% more TDM at different stages of growth than those of control, and it was superior to other treatments with NAA. Other growth parameters also increased following 1500 ppm KNap treatment. LAI, CGR, NAR and AGDM had a significant linear relationship with seed yield. The combination treatments of KNap and NAA concentrations did not show any cumulative influence on any of the parameters.   Key words: Growth analysis, Chickpea, Foliar spray, Growth regulators DOI = 10.3329/bjb.v36i2.1497 Bangladesh J. Leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and leaf area duration (LAD) of a variety of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were studied with three concentrations (0, 25 and 50 ppm) of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and four levels (0, 50, 75 and 100 %) of Nfertilizer in a field experiment during 2014 - 2015. Results showed that LAI and LAD at all stages of growth increased from control and their peak values were recorded mostly from 25 ppm NAA in combination with 75 % N-fertilizer and 50 ppm NAA in combination with 50% N-fertilizer. RGR was affected both positively and negatively depending on the concentration of NAA and nitrogen levels and was higher at earlier age (15 to 45 DAS) as opposed to later stage irrespective of treatments. CGR and NAR were also affected positively and negatively and tended to increase sharply reaching maximum at 30 - 45 DAS with a few exceptions and then decreased for most of the treatments with the progression of age. At 30 - 45 DAS, peak value of CGR was recorded from 25 ppm NAA in combination with 75% N-fertilizer. Of all the treatments, 25 ppm NAA in combination with 75% N-fertilizer produced better stimulation. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. Sci. 25(2): 131-138, 2016 (July)

A field experiment was carried out during rabi season of 2018-2019, at college farm, College of Horticulture, Dr. Y.S.R. Horticultural University, Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. The experiment was laidout in a Randomised Block Design with eleven treatments (viz., T1- NAA @ 50 ppm, T2-NAA @ 100 ppm, T3-GA3 @ 50 ppm,  T4-GA3 @ 100 ppm, T5-Thiourea @ 250 ppm, T6-Thiourea @ 500 ppm, T7-28-Homobrassinolide @ 0.1 ppm, T8-28-Homobrassinolide @ 0.2 ppm, T9-Triacontinol @ 2.5 ppm, T10-Triacontinol @ 5 ppm, T11-(Control) Water spray) and three replications. The treatments were imposed at 30 and 45 DAT in the form of foliar spray. Foliar application of GA3@ 100 ppm (T4) had recorded the maximum plant height (108.20 cm), leaf area (9.53 cm2) and leaf area index (0.74). Foliar application of thiourea @ 250 ppm (T5) had recorded the maximum values with respect to number of primary branches (15.03 plant-1), number of secondary branches (83.40 plant-1), plant spread (1793 cm2 plant-1), fresh weight (376.29 g plant-1), dry weight (103.54 g plant-1) and number of leaves plant-1((298.8). The same treatment (T5) had recorded the highest values with respect to crop growth rate (1.44 gm-2d-1), chlorophyll-a (1.40 mg g-1), chlorophyll-b (0.076 mg g-1) and total chlorophyll contents (1.48 mg g-1) in the leaves.

A field study was conducted during the Rabi season of 2009-2010 in the research field of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Dhaka. Six levels of GA3, viz. 0, 30, 50, 70, 90 and 110 ppm were sprayed at 18 days after sowing (DAS). GA3 treatments significantly increased plant height than the control plants. GA3 with 30 to 90 ppm significantly increased number of branches and leaves, leaf area, leaf area index (LAI), leaf dry matter and total dry matter at different growth stages. GA3 at 30 to 70 ppm gradually increased crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) and declined advanced growth stages. Number of dry pods /plant, number of seeds /pod, 1000 seed weight, fresh fodder, fresh pod, dry seed yield and harvest index also significantly increased. AbstractThe growth of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L) is affected by genetic and environmental factors.  One of the environmental factors involved is growing space. Growing space related to each plant of areas occupied is stated by the distance between plants. A Research has been conducted as long three months in dry season with average daily temperature of 25 to 31OC on altitude of 25 to 500 meter, to determine the timing of the application of cutback technology based on an analysis of growth of jack bean plants (Canavalia ensiformis L) in different growth spaces.  The research was conducted in the trial form using a randomized block design. Variables of plants growth analysis observed is leaf area index (LAI), leaf area is computed by gravimetric method; net assimilation rate (NAR), and relative growth rate (RGR) is determined based on the dry weight of plants; in all three rooms grew, namely 75 cm x 100 cm (control), 75 cm × 75 cm and 75 cm × 50 cm, each repeated three times. The result shows that the trend of leaf area index increased at net assimilation rate (g-1.cm-2.week-1) and relative growth rate (g-1.g-1.minggu-1) decreasing at the time the plant to the age 8 weeks after planting.  The best time for the application of reduction technology to jack bean plants (Canavalia ensiformis L) in all tested growing spaces, is recommended when plants are between 7 and 8 weeks after planting

Summary Growth analysis helps explain the differences in yield and growth potential between cultivars in response to management practices and environmental conditions. The aim of the research was: (i) to investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the growth and growth parameters of different wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars and (ii) to study the relationship between yield and growth parameters at the individual plant and plant stand level. In the two-factorial, split-plot experiment, the main plot was the nitrogen (N) treatment and the sub-plot was the cultivar. In response to N fertilization, the values of growth rate parameters increased up to the N160 treatment. The mean values of crop growth rate (g m-2 day-1) in the treatments were as follows: N0: 10.4, N80: 15.4, N160: 17.2 and N240: 16.3. The leaf area index, leaf area duration and especially the duration of the flag-leaf gave a good reflection of the effect of N fertilization. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated the significant effect of growth rates, size and duration of leaf area, biomass distribution and yield components on the yield. The results showed that understanding the growth of plants is important for optimizing management decisions.

Impact of plant growth regulators viz., benzyl amino purine (BAP - 50 ppm), brassinolide (BL - 0.5 ppm), and nutrient like KCl (1%) alone and with combination on growth and growth analytical parameters, and yield of finger millet by foliar spray at panicle initiation stage under rainfed condition was studied in field experiment. The treatments including control, KCl, BAP, BL, KCl + BAP, KCl + BL, BAP + BL and KCl + BAP + BL and different growth and growth analytical parameters were estimated. Combination of KCl, BAP and BL registered highest root length (17.2 cm), leaf area (425.3 cm2), leaf area index (1.82) and leaf area duration (55.7 days) compared to other treatments. Higher specific leaf weight and crop growth rate were recorded by KCl + BAP, and BAP + BL, respectively. The highest grain yield of 22.5 Q/ha was recorded by KCl + BAP + BL.

A field experiment was conducted at the Main Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Hebbal, Bangalore, to know the effect of site specific nutrient management (SSNM) on growth and yield of groundnut. The fertilizers were applied to the crop based on uptake pattern, target yield and soil fertility status. The study indicated that application of fertilizers based on SSNM for target yield of 2.5 t ha-1 + S (10 kg ha-1) + B (10 kg ha-1) + Zn (12.50 kg ha-1) recorded significantly higher growth parameters viz., plant height (45.3 cm), number of branches (8.10), leaf area (814.95 cm-2), leaf area index (2.72) and total dry matter accumulation (31.82 g plant-1). The yield parameters viz., total number of pods per plant (19.57), pod weight per plant (12.05 g), 100 kernel weight (34.74 g) and shelling per cent (75.32) were significantly higher with the application of fertilizers based on SSNM for target yield of 2.5 t ha-1 + S + B + Zn compared to recommended dose of fertilizer. The Maximum gross returns were obtained in T4 (application of SSNM for target yield of 2.5 t ha-1 + S + B + Zn) (Rs. 79219), where as, higher net returns and B:C ratio were obtained with T3 (SSNM for target yield of 2.5 t ha-1) (Rs. 46771 and 2.47 respectively) and lower net returns and B:C ratio were with application of Rec. NPK + FYM (T1) (Rs. 33852 and 2.13 respectively).

Growth analysis of field-grown rape (Brassica napus L.) was carried out during 1975 and 1976 at Saskatoon. Plant morphology was altered by the use of four planting densities under three water regimes. High seeding rates and non-irrigated conditions caused a greater proportion of dry matter production to occur before flowering than after flowering, while the reverse occurred at low seeding rates and under irrigated conditions. Leaf area index reached a maximum near the start of flowering, and then declined rapidly. Pod surface area was increased by irrigation and was higher at the high seeding rates than at the low seeding rates. Maximum leaf area index was correlated with seed yield. Correlations between pod area and seed yield were poor, particularly in 1976. The growth functions mean net assimilation rate [Formula: see text] and mean crop growth rate [Formula: see text] were influenced by both seeding rates and irrigation. There was an increase in [Formula: see text] during the ripening phase, suggesting increased photosynthetic efficiency. No evidence of a distinct optimum leaf area index was found.

Field experiments were conducted at the Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from November to February in 2004-05 and 2005-06 to evaluate the effect of different levels of sulphur (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 kg/ha) on rapeseed variety BARI Sarisha-15. Results showed that the most of the growth parameters and yield attributes were significantly influenced by different doses of sulphur. The growth parameters, yield and yield contributing characters were increased with the increasing levels of sulphur fertilizer up to 60 kg S/ha and with the doses beyond that were found to decrease. All growth parameters like plant height, leaf area, dry matter accumulation, leaf area index, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate, and relative growth rate and all yield components, such as number of siliquae per plant, seeds per siliqua, 1000-seed weight and seed yield per plant were found maximum from the treatment with 60 kg S/ha, which was at par with 80 kg S/ha. The highest seed yield (1990 and 1896 kg/ha) were found when S was used @ 60 kg/ha. The same treatment gave 24.71 % and 24.32 % higher seed yield than the control treatment, which were statistically identical with dose at 80 kg /ha of sulphur in both the years. Growth analysis is an appropriate method for plant response to various environmental and cultural conditions during plant life. A 2-year experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of soil tillage and fertilization on the growth and growth parameters of quinoa crop and to determine the association between yield and growth characteristics at both the single plant and crop stand level. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with two replicates, two main plots [conventional (CT) and minimum tillage (MT)] and four sub-plots [fertilization treatments: untreated, inorganic fertilization of 100 (N1) and 200 kg N ha-1 (N2) and sheep manure]. The highest absolute growth rate (AGR) and crop growth rate (CGR) values were recorded between the middle of vegetative growth stage and the beginning of anthesis (50-75 DAS) under conventional tillage coupled with manure (AGR: 0.4577 g day-1, CGR: 11.44 g m-2 day-1) and with N2 treatment (AGR: 0.4521 g day-1, CGR: 11.31 g m-2 day-1). Concerning specific leaf area (SLA), the highest value (150.58 cm2 g-1) was found at 75 DAS in N2 treatment. Leaf area index (LAI) were positively affected by soil tillage and fertilization with greatest values found under conventional tillage coupled with N2 treatment (5.110 m2 m-2). The highest seed yield was observed in N2 treatment (2488 and 2388 kg ha-1 under CT and MT, respectively). As a conclusion, the cultivation under conventional tillage and the increasing levels of applied nitrogen up to 200 kg N ha-1 increases crop growth and yield.   ********* In press - Online First.
