Mikania glomerata (Asteraceae) hosts eight gall midge species (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), each one responsible for a different gall morphotype. In a survey conducted in Recanto das Cigarras, Viçosa, Minas Gerais state (Brazil), we found three of these eight gall midges: Liodiplosis cylindrica, L. spherica, and Asphondylia glomeratae, each exhibiting a low infestation rate. This study offers an updated geographic distribution of these three gall midge species, recorded for the first time in Minas Gerais state.

We present for the first time the geographic distribution of mirids in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, taking into account the vegetation areas, climate features, and species richness. All the information about species distribution in Minas Gerais was obtained using references on Neotropical Miridae and data labels of specimens deposited in National collections. Minas Gerais represents the largest diversity of mirids in Brazil, 311 species. The mirids were collected in 42 counties in Minas Gerais. They are present in all the 4 major biomes of the State. The Atlantic Forest has the greatest richness, with 214 species, followed by Cerrado with 128 species. We suggest that the diversity of Minas Gerais mirids began in the Atlantic Forest. Fisher's PLSD test among mirid subfamilies at different elevations, temperatures, and precipitations showed a significant effect of elevation only.

The objectives of this study were to identify anthophilous butterflies on psychophilous flowers of four Asteraceae species in an Atlantic Forest fragment in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Southeastern Brazil, and to determine whether there are species in common with other lepidopteran inventories of the Southeastern and Midwestern regions of Brazil. It is the first inventory of anthophilous butterflies of a semideciduous forest fragment in Zona da Mata, State of Minas Gerais. A total of 108 species were recorded, representing the fourth largest lepidopteran survey in this State. The results demonstrated that Asteraceae species may be important tools for monitoring anthophilous butterflies. The similarity with other inventories ranged from 1 to 92.55%. Fifteen species were reported for the first time in the State of Minas Gerais, and among them, Melanis alena and Thisbe irenea were observed in this study only.

Abstract Senna comprises about 350 species worldwide, of which 80 species occur in Brazil. This work brings an update taxonomic treatment of Senna species in the state of Minas Gerais, the second most diverse state for the genus, through the morphological analysis of about 2,348 specimens from herbaria and fieldwork. Thirty-six species and 29 varieties were recognized, including 34 native species and 2 cultivated species. Of the 39 species reported in literature for the state, but 4 species were excluded from the list produced. The occurrence of Senna acuruensis was confirmed; S. macranthera var. striata and S. pilifera var. tubata are new records, and S. hirsuta var. acuminata is endemic to Minas Gerais. There are 28 species in the Cerrado, 26 species in the Atlantic Forest and 20 species in the Caatinga. The distribution of Senna pentagonia var. pentagonia is extended to include the Atlantic Forest. Identification keys, descriptions, illustrations, taxonomic comments and geographic distribution are provided for the species and varities.

ABSTRACT The objective was to present the floristic survey of the bryophytes of the Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro. It included an evaluation of the species richness, as well as information about the substrate preference of each species and its geographic distributions in Brazil. We found 208 taxa of bryophytes: one hornwort, 88 liverworts and 119 mosses. This richness represents ca. 26% of the bryoflora of Minas Gerais State and ca. 13% of that known for Brazil. Eighteen of the bryophytes species are endemic to Brazil, whereas 19 species are recorded for the first time in Minas Gerais. The bryoflora showed preference for tree bark (30%) and rock (23%) as substrates. Our data show that the Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro is an important area for the diversity conservation of Brazilian bryophytes and maintenance of endemic species of the country.

The freshwater crab Trichodactylus fluviatilis Latreille, 1828 is recorded here for the first time, at an altitude above 1000 m a.s.l. Sampling was performed in the Grota stream in Campos das Vertentes, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. This new record extends the known altitudinal distribution to 1115 m a.s.l., which significantly contributes to understanding the conditioning limits and factors for this species’ distribution. Moreover, the occurrence of an ectosymbiont platyhelminth of the genus Temnocephala is also reported on the crabs collected.

Five gall midges species (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) are recorded for the first time in Pirenópolis (Goiás, Brazil, Cerrado biome): Contarinia gemmae, Lopesia caulinaris, L. conspicua, and L. elliptica, as well as an unidentified species of Cecidomyiidae, causative agent of marginal leaf galls. All of these species are associated with Calophyllum brasiliense (Calophyllaceae). Previous records included only Southern Brazil and now, the geographic distribution of these species is widened to the Midwest Region.

We present here the first record of Amphisbaena mertensi in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. Through analysis of scientific collections, we found specimens of A. mertensi from municipalities of Patos de Minas, Uberaba, Indianópolis, Uberlândia and Araguari, in Triângulo Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba regions. These localities are inserted in the Cerrado biome, with Atlantic Forest enclaves, and represent an expansion of the previously known geographic distribution for the species.

Dinoponera lucida é uma formiga endêmica da Mata Atlântica e desde 2003 está na lista de espécies ameaçadas de extinção. O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi relatar a ocorrência desta formiga em uma área sob ação antrópica no Vale do Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, Brasil, fora da sua área de distribuição geográfica conhecida Cinquenta exemplares dessa formiga foram coletadas em uma área próxima a cidade de Ponto dos Volantes e levadas para o laboratório de Controle Biológico de Insetos em Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brasil, colocadas com álcool a 70% e enviadas ao Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo, Brasil, para identificação. Mapas foram elaborados para ilustrar a distância do ponto de coleta dos exemplares de D. lucida a sua distribuição geográfica e o levantamento da vegetação predominante do município de Ponto dos Volantes. Este é o primeiro relato de D. lucida no nordeste de Minas Gerais, Brasil. A maioria dos indivíduos de D. lucida estava morta ou quebrada, mas as possíveis causas como a destruição de seu habitat ou competição não foram determinadas. A presença desta formiga fora de sua área endêmica inicial indica a possível presença de populações isoladas de D. lucida. Palavras-chave: Adaptação. Formiga. Mata Atlântica. Fragmentação. Insetos.   Abstract   Dinoponera lucida is an endemic ant to the Atlantic Forest and since 2003 has been on the list of endangered species. The objective of this research was to report the occurrence of this ant in area under anthropic action in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil, outside its known geographic distribution area. Fifty ants were collected and taken to the Biological Control Laboratory of Insects in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, placed in70% alcohol and sent to the Federal Institute of Espirito Santo, Brazil to be identified. Maps were elaborated to illustrate the distance from the collection point of the D. lucida specimens to their geographic distribution and the survey of the predominant vegetation of the municipality of Ponto dos Volantes. This is the first report of D. lucida in the north of Minas Gerais State, Brazil.Most individuals of D. lucida were dead or broken, but possible causes such as the destruction of their habitat or competition were not determined. The presence of this ant outside its original endemic area indicates the possible presence of isolated populations of D. lucida. Keyword: Adaptation. Ant. Atlantic Forest. Fragmentation. Abstract: Most Neotropical species of Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) have been described from Brazil, but a list of species with occurrence in the country has never been published. Little is known about their distribution and richness in the Brazilian phytogeographic domains. Additionally, a list of host plant species has never been gathered. The present study aims to fill these knowledge gaps and provides an overview of this family in Brazil. For this, data were obtained mainly from the literature, but also from the Cecidomyiidae collection of Museu Nacional and two herbaria (RB and R). Based on the site "Flora do Brasil 2020", botanical names were updated and plant species origin and distribution were verified. A total of 265 gall midge species have been recorded in Brazil, most from the Atlantic Forest (183), followed by Cerrado (60), and Amazon Forest (29). The other phytogeographic domains shelter from five to ten species. Phytophagous gall midges occur on 128 plant species of 52 families, almost all native, being 43 endemic to Brazil (21 endemic to Atlantic Forest, five to Cerrado, and one to Amazon). Although, the taxonomical knowledge is focused on the Atlantic Forest, each domain has its own fauna composition and these informations can be useful for environmental conservational purposes. About 58% of the Brazilian fauna are known only from the type-locality. In order to fill these gaps, it is necessary and important to collect in uninvestigated areas.

We present a new record of the Crested Eagle, Morphnus guianensis (Daudin, 1800), a rare forest eagle of the Neotropics on 22 May 2012 at a Cerrado area in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. The species has only two historical records in the state, both at areas formerly covered by Atlantic Forest. The finding raises the expectations for the maintenance of the species in the state, stressing the fact that this is the first species record in a Cerrado area in Eastern Brazilian states.
