Abstract The current study was carried out to estimate the prevalence and diversity of ectoparasites in rock pigeons in different regions of Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 120 birds were captured from March 2017 to February 2019. The ectoparasites were collected by standard procedures and preserved in 70% ethanol containing one drop of glycerin. Data related to age, health status, sex, type of area, sampling location and season were collected using a standardized form. Ectoparasites were identified based on morphological characteristics by using identification keys. Ninety-six (80%) birds were infested with ectoparasites. A total of seven families and thirteen species of different ectoparasites were observed. Mainly, seven species of lice, two species of flies, one species of tick and three species of mites were recovered from infested birds. The female pigeons were more often infested (89.02%) than male pigeons (60.52%). The prevalence was found higher during summer (100%) as compared to other seasons. The infestation rate was higher in Industrial area (97.50%) as compared to other regions. The highest prevalence of ectoparasites (100%) was recorded from Sargodha district. There was significant (P < 0.05) variation among number of ectoparasites on wing, chest, tail and neck within age groups, seasons and ecological zones. The occurrence of parasites in relation to area, age, health status, sex and season were significant. The infestation rate of parasites in rock pigeon is high in different districts of Punjab. It is recommended that these wild birds infested with multiple species of ectoparasites could be the potential source of infestations in domesticated birds if they come in contact with them. The contact of domesticated birds should be prevented from wild birds to minimize the chance of cross species transmission of ectoparasites.

This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in goats in central Algeria. A total of 605 samples of goat faeces were collected from several mixed farms (sheep and goats) in the regions of Médéa, Djelfa, and Ain Defla. Cryptosporidium spp. was detected using the Ziehl-Nelseen technique modified by Henriksen and Polhenz. Cryptosporidium spp. was detected in 103 samples (17.02%). Females accounted for 69.90% of positive samples while males accounted for 30.09% of positive samples (P&lt;0.05). The most infested animals were those aged between 2 months and 7 years (69.99%). Animals under 15 days of age were also very vulnerable to infection (59.25%) (P&lt;0.05); Young goats with diarrhoea infested with Cryptosporidium were noticed in 25% of samples. The infestation rate during autumn was 56.31%, and 43.68% in spring (P&lt;0.05). Post-weaned goats are potential carriers and shedders of the parasite and young are vulnerable to the infection. To conclude, further studies are needed on a larger sample and in other areas to improve our epidemiology knowledge of cryptosporidiosis in goats.

Invasive pests pose a great threat to forest, woodland and urban tree ecosystems. The oak processionary moth (OPM) is a destructive pest of oak trees, first reported in the UK in 2006. Despite great efforts to contain the outbreak within the original infested area of South-East England, OPM continues to spread. Here we analyse data of the numbers of OPM nests removed each year from two parks in London between 2013 and 2020. Using a state-of-the-art Bayesian inference scheme we estimate the parameters for a stochastic compartmental SIR (susceptible, infested, removed) model with a time varying infestation rate to describe the spread of OPM. We find that the infestation rate and subsequent basic reproduction number have remained constant since 2013 (with R_0 between one and two). This shows further controls must be taken to reduce R_0 below one and stop the advance of OPM into other areas of England. Our findings demonstrate the applicability of the SIR model to describing OPM spread and show that further controls are needed to reduce the infestation rate. The proposed statistical methodology is a powerful tool to explore the nature of a time varying infestation rate, applicable to other partially observed time series epidemic data.spread and show that further controls are needed to reduce the infestation rate. The white-backed planthopper (WBPH) is a serious pest of rice crop and causes sever yield loss each year, especially in Asian countries. In this study, we used chorismate mutase (CM) transgenic line to examine the defense mechanism of rice plants against WBPH. The survival rate of WBPHs, infestation rate of plants, lignin biosynthesis, transcriptional regulation of related genes, salicylic acid (SA) accumulation and signaling and antioxidants regulation were investigated. The WBPH population decreased by 67% in OxCM-t, and the plant infestation rate was 3.5-fold higher in wild-type plants compared with transgenic plants. A substantial increase in lignin was found in the transgenic line (742%) and wild-type (417%) plants. Additionally, CM, phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS), and chalcone isomerase (CHI) showed significant increases in their relative expression level in the transgenic line. Salicylic acid was significantly enhanced in the transgenic line compared with WBPH infestation. SA can activate pathogenesis related proteins-1 (PR1), PR2, antioxidants, and the expression of their related genes: superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). WBPH infestation reduced the chlorophyll contents of both transgenic and wild-type plants, but the reduction was great in wild-type than transgenic plants. The sugar content was only significantly increased in the transgenic line, indicating that sugars are not heavily involved in WBPH stress. Phenylalanine, proline, aspartic acid, and total amino acids were increased in the transgenic line and reduced in the wild-type plants. Taken together, all the results suggest that overexpression of CM gene regulates the defense mechanisms and enhances the rice toward WBPH stress.

This study aimed to identify gastrointestinal parasites in camels (Camelus dromaderius) in the Laghouat region (southern Algeria). The study was carried out over a 5-month period on a total of 100 dromedaries. Dung samples were analysed using different methods such as flotation, sedimentation, and Ziehel-Neelsen staining for research of the cryptosporidiosis. Data showed an overall infestation rate of 78%, with the presence of the following parasites: Cryptosporidium sp. (60%), Nematodes: Nematodirussp (23%), Strongyloides sp. (4%), Marshallagia sp. (2%), and Cooperiasp (3%), different protozoaires: Eimeria sp. (20%), Neobalantidium sp. (2%), and Balantidium coli, cestodes (6%), Moniezia sp. (3%), Multicips sp. (2%), Diphillobothrium sp. (1%), and trematodes: Fasciola hépatica (4%) and Paramphistomum sp (1%). The results showed a significant influence of study site on the parasitic infestation rate (P=0.039). Other factors (sex, age and clinical aspect) had no significant influence. To conclude, gastrointestinal parasites are a major problem of indigenous camels under traditional husbandry. Therefore, parasite control programmes are recommended to increase the productivity of this useful animal.

We evaluated here the effects of the epibiotic diatom Tabularia sp. on the productivity of the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa (Dana) for assessing their risk on copepod intensive aquaculture industry for the provision of live feed. In the first experiment, uninfested and intensively infested females were cultivated individually for the assessment of egg production. Intensively infested females appeared to have a significantly lower egg production (5.0–9.0 eggs/female/d) than uninfested females (22.0–26.0 eggs/female/d) during 5 consecutive days. In the second experiment, effects of culture densities on diatom epibiosis were investigated in 9 L cultures at three different densities (200, 400, and 600 ind. L–1). Another culture at higher volume (250 L) and lowest density (200 ind. L–1) was also carried out to test the effect of culture volume on diatom epibiosis. The infestation rate (%), infestation intensity (ratio of surface diatom coverage levels, classified as levels 0–3) and daily egg harvest rate (number of harvested eggs per day per liter) were evaluated among the four culture populations. The copepods had higher infestation rate (53.69–60.14%) and intensity rate (high ratios at level 2 and 3) when the densities were increased from 200 ind./L to 400 and 600 ind./L. Although egg harvest increased with increasing culture density, it seemed that the diatom-infested A. tonsa population reach a saturated egg production when the density was higher than 400 ind./L. Nevertheless, the differences of culture volumes (250 and 9 L) appeared to be not to have any effect when the copepods were cultivated at the same density (200 ind./L). This study reveals for the first time that the epibiosis of the diatom Tabularia sp. reduces the individual egg production, and egg harvest rate in high-density culture of the copepod A. tonsa. Our findings implicate that diatom epibiosis should be avoid in copepod intensive culture systems.

Background and Aim: Cuscuses are one of the endemic Indonesian marsupials, which needs to be protected and revived in terms of the numbers and range of species. Ectoparasites of ticks (Ixodidae) are one potential obstacle to cuscus conservation. Tick infestation can cause blood loss in the host, even being a predisposing factor for infection with pathogenic organisms. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, infestation intensity, and species of ticks present on cuscuses in Maluku Province, Indonesia. Materials and Methods: Ticks were collected from cuscuses origin of the four regions in Maluku Province, namely the island of Ambon, Seram Island, Romang Island, and Wetar Island . Cuscuses were captured at night, with ticks being collected from them from the head to the tip of the tail. The tick samples obtained from the cuscuses were preserved, identified, and counted. Cuscuses were released back into their habitat after collecting the ticks. The obtained ticks were observed using an Olympus BX51 microscope with an Olympus DP12 digital camera and prepared for examination under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Infestation rate, infestation intensity, and morphology of the species were described. Results: The cuscuses were found to be infested with Ixodes cordifer ticks. Cuscuses in Maluku Province had a low tick infestation rate. The range of infestation prevalence of island origin cuscuses in Maluku was between 14.28% and 16.67%. Simultaneously, I. cordifer infestation level was mildly infested based on the intensity of thick infestation ranged from 1 to 1.2 ticks per cuscus. From observation of the tick surface structure under SEM, sexual dimorphism and various specific characteristics of the ticks were identified. Conclusion: The low infestation rate of I. cordifer ticks in cuscus was influenced by the up and down movement of the conscious activity in the tree, which allowed minimal contact with the ticks. The infestation prevalence rates on each island studied were similar. Such similarities of infestation are related to the similarity of cuscus species among Ambon, Lakor, Seram, and Romang islands, which are all included in the Phalangeridae family, and their similar habitats, behaviors, climatic conditions, and geographical areas.
