The present paper reports the first record of non-native species Poecilia sphenops Valenciennes, 1846 in northeastern Brazil in rio Sergipe basin, a coastal drainage of the Sergipe state. This species was collected at seven sites in the Caatinga biome. The cause of the introduction is not known, but we believe it is a direct impact of the aquarium trade through the aquarium dumping performed by hobbyists. The presence of P. sphenops in natural waterbodies increases concerns for interference with native ecosystems, and the risk of eggs predation in native species with low fecundity and absence of parental care such as Astyanax lacustris and Serrapinnus heterodon, competition and hybridization with the native poeciliid Poecilia vivipara.

This study provides the first record of the exotic invasive bivalve Isognomon bicolor for the State of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil. It has been found to occur in at least twelve coastal reefs along the coast. We also present its first record for the State of Alagoas and new record localities for the States of Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco, including its occurrence in hypersaline estuaries. From these records the distribution range of I. bicolor has been expanded to the littoral region of Northeast Brazil, where this invasive species seems well established.

The genus Xenohyla is currently composed of two species, X. truncata (Izecksohn, 1959) and Xenohyla eugenioi Caramaschi, 1998. Both species are usually found inside bromeliads; X. truncata inhabits the restingas of the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil, and X. eugenioi transitional areas between the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga biomes in northeastern Brazil. We report the first record of X. eugenioi in the state of Sergipe, expanding the species geographic distribution by 423.4 km in a straight line in relation to its type locality, in the municipality of Maracás, south-central state of Bahia, Brazil.

Moringua edwardsi is recorded for the first time at Atol das Rocas, northeastern Brazil. Previous records of the species were located in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Florida to southeastern Brazil, but with many gaps between these regions. A single specimen was collected in Atol das Rocas in July 2007 and it is deposited in the Dias da Rocha Ichthyological Collection. The new record of M. edwardsi fills a geographic distribution gap of this species and complements the inventory of fish species inhabiting one of the most unique marine protected areas in the world.

A single male of Heraclides a. astyalus was collected in the Catimbau National Park, Buíque, Pernambuco, located in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. It is the first record for the species in the Caatinga domain and the first record for the subspecies in latitudes above the São Francisco river.

In July 2016, an important regional checklist entitled “Decapod crustaceans from the state of Ceará, northeastern Brazil: an updated checklist of marine and estuarine species, with 23 new records” was published in the journal Zootaxa (Pachelle et al. 2016). A few days after publication of this monograph, two of our colleagues specialised in the taxonomy of ghost and mud shrimps (Axiidea and Gebiidea), Dr Mônica Botter-Carvalho (UFRPE) and Dr Peter C. Dworschak (NHMW), informed us that the material reported under Neocallichirus maryae Karasawa, 2004 appeared to contain more than one species. Their comments were based on examination of colour photographs showing several specimens identified as N. maryae in Pachelle et al. (2016)’s figure 21. This prompted a re-examination of the material from Ceará identified as N. maryae, including all specimens reported by Pachelle et al. (2016). Despite the fact that most of them were correctly identified as N. maryae, two individuals (MZUSP 32610, 32615) were re-identified as Sergio guassutinga (Rodrigues, 1971) [as indeed suggested by M. Botter-Carvalho and P.C. Dworschak] and Neocallichirus cacahuate Felder & Manning, 1995, respectively. The former species is a new record for the state of Ceará, whilst the latter species represents a new record not only for Ceará, but also for Brazil and the southwestern Atlantic.

The first British Pleistocene record of Larix (Larch) is described from the Brays Pit near Mathon in the English West Midlands. This new record is the most westerly from the European Pleistocene and is also beyond the western limit of the distribution of any extant species of Larix within Europe. Today there are no native species of Larix in the British Isles. The fossil remains comprise of macrofossils and pollen, which are not, however, well enough preserved to allow determination to species level. The fluvial sediments which yielded the fossils were probably deposited in the early Anglian Stage or possibly during an earlier Pleistocene event.

We present the first record of Epicadus trituberculatus (Taczanowski, 1872) from the Northeast Region of Brazil. The new record is based on six specimens observed in two areas of montane semi-deciduous tropical forest located in two municipalities: Guaramiranga and Pacatuba, Ceará state, Brazil. Of the six specimens observed we collected manually only three to preserve as voucher material. In Brazil, E. trituberculatus has a wide distribution range, which extends from the Atlantic Forest, Amazon, and Cerrado biomes and the Pampa ecoregion. With the new record there are currently six known species of Epicadus in northeastern Brazil.

We provide the first record of Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther, 1866) in a river basin in the northeastern Brazil. Specimens were collected in the Jaguaribe River basin, João Pessoa, Paraíba state, Brazil. Two hundred eighty-one specimens, corresponding to 143 males and 138 females of X. maculatus, were collected at nine sites along the basin, from 2017 to 2019. Specimens total length ranged from 17.5 to 26.6 mm in males and from 11.7 to 32.7 mm in females. Introduction of non-native species greatly threatens the biological diversity worldwide. When introduced into a new habitat, X. maculatus usually decreases microcrustacean, macroinvertebrate and native fish populations.

The introduction of exotic species, although harmful to the natural environment, still occurs accidentally, intentionally or as a strategy of biological control. In this work, a specimen of Betta splendens was collected and recorded for Northeastern Brazil, a fish of the family Osphronemidae, originally from Asia. This species has the potential to compete with the native species, causing alterations in the natural community. The record of this species in Brazilian environments and the lack of diagnostic works on this region makes this work of special importance and as an incentive for future investigations.
