ABSTRACTInkjet printing is a highly material-efficient solution deposition technique that enables the preparation of thin-film libraries using little amounts of materials. As a reproducible and precise patterning technique inkjet printing can be integrated into a combinatorial screening workflow that allowed the systematic characterization of thin-film properties of newly developed materials as well as the methodical investigation of preparation parameter that influence the performance of the inkjet printed layers. This contribution provides a demonstration of a combinatorial screening workflow that utilizes inkjet printing to evaluate structure-property relationships of polymer/fullerene blends for the application in organic photovoltaics. Using this approach it is shown that optimized blend compositions as well as printing conditions lead to improved performances of organic solar cell devices.

ABSTRACTAlthough Much has been published on giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) in co-deposited thin films [1–4], only little [5] has been published on the structure-property relationships limiting the effect. Here, we report the results of microstructural characterization of NiFeAg thin films that exhibit a GMR effect. The as-deposited films show a sizeable GMR effect. The Maximum GMR effect observed was 6.4% with -4k0e FWHM of the 6P/P peak. Upon annealing these films, the GMR at first increases, and then decreases. We present microstructural evidence from TEM and XRD, amongst other techniques, which shows that this is a consequence of the initial NiFeAg thin film agglomerating into NiFe grains in a predominantly Ag segregant Matrix. Upon extended annealing, excessive grain growth leads to a decrease in the GMR as predicted by the model of Berkowitz, et al. [1].

Enhancement of photon absorption on barium strontium titanate (BaxSr1-xTiO3) thin-film semiconductor for mole fractionx=0.25, 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55 using one-dimensional photonic crystal with defect was investigated experimentally. The thin film was grown on transparent conductive oxide (TCO) substrate using chemical solution deposition method and annealed at 500°C for 15 hours with increasing rate of 1.6°C/min. From optical characterization in visible spectrum it was found that the average absorption percentages are 92.04%, 83.55%, 91.16%, and 80.12%, respectively. The BST thin film with embedded photonic crystal exhibited a relatively significant enhancement on photon absorption, with increasing value of 3.96%, 7.07%, 3.04%, and 13.33% for the respective mole fraction and demonstrating absorbance characteristic with flat feature. In addition, we also discuss the thin-film properties of attenuation constant and electrical conductivity.

In this study, thin films of CaBi4Ti4O15with preferential crystal orientation were prepared by the chemical solution deposition (CSD) technique on a SiO2/Si substrate. The films consisted of a crystalline phase of bismuth-layer-structured dielectric. The as-deposited CaBi4Ti4O15thin films were crystallized in a conventional furnace annealing (RTA) under the temperature of 700 to 800°C for 1min. Structural and morphological characterization of the CBT thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The impedance analyzer HP4294A and HP4156C semiconductor parameters analyzer were used to measurement capacitance voltage (C-V) characteristics and leakage current density of electric field (J-E) characteristics by metal-ferroelectric-insulator- semiconductor (MFIS) structure. By the experimental result the CBT thin film in electrical field 20V, annealing temperature in 750°C the CBT thin film leaks the electric current is 1.88x10-7A/cm2and the memory window is 1.2V. In addition, we found the strongest (119) peak of as-deposited thin films as the annealed temperature of 750°C

ABSTRACTThe structure-property relationships of several conducting transition metal oxides, as well as their preparative methods, are presented in this paper. The importance of preparing homogeneous phases with precisely known stoichiometry is emphasized. A comparison is also made of the various techniques used to prepare both polycrystalline and single crystal samples. For transition metal oxides, the metallic properties are discussed either in terms of metal-metal distances which are short enough to result in metallic behavior, or in terms of the formation of a П* conduction band resulting from covalent metal-oxygen interactions. Metallic behavior is observed when the conduction bands are populated with either electrons or holes. The concentration of these carriers can be affected by either cation or anion substitutions. The discussion in this presentation will be limited to the elements Re, Ti, V, Cr, Mo, and Cu.

ABSTRACTImidazoles present a tunable, versatile and economical platform for the development of novel liquid solvents and polymer membranes for CO2 capture. An overview of our studies in this area is presented, with emphasis on characterization of structure-property relationships in imidazole-based materials through both experimental and computational studies. To this end, a growing library of systematically varied imidazole compounds has been synthesized using only commercial available starting materials and straightforward reactions. Using this library of compounds, we have sought to understand and develop predictive models for thermophysical properties relating to process design, including: density, viscosity, vapor pressure, pKa and CO2 absorption capacity. Furthermore, we have discovered that imidazoles are stable in the presence of SO2 and can form reversible 1:1 adducts, which can be beneficial as SO2 is typically present at ppm levels alongside CO2 in flue gas from coal-fired power plants.

Abstract Structure-property relationships were investigated in hyperbranched polyisobutylenes, in comparison with commercial linear butyl rubber. The gel-free, soluble hyperbranched polyisobutylenes, synthesized by living carbocationic polymerization, had molecular weights, Mw≈400,000 to 1,000,000 g/mol, molecular weight distributions, MWD ≈1.2 to 2.6, and branching frequencies, BR ≈ 4 to 60. The mechanical and viscoelastic characterization of these polymers revealed interesting properties, including the characteristics of crosslinked rubbers.

ABSTRACTZinc oxide thin films doped with zirconium were prepared from solutions with doping material dispersed at several concentrations and using the spray pyrolysis technique. The films were deposited over sodocalcic glasses at different substrate temperatures. Effects of doping material concentration and substrate temperatures on electrical, optical, structural and morphological film properties are presented. Results show an evolution in morphology and grains size as the doping concentration is increased. Preferential growth in the (002) orientation was detected for each thin film from X ray diffractograms.
