AbstractAdvanced diagnostic instruments and analyses applied to failure surfaces and cross sections of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) can provide insight into the deformation and failure of these materials and assist in prototyping new materials with improved failure resistance. Confocal- optics scanning laser microscopic analysis of conjugate fracture surface topographs suggests that the formation and stretching of ligaments are likely keys to the high impact toughness of Vitreloy.

Abstract.This work measured $ \mathrm{d}\sigma/\mathrm{d}\Omega$dσ/dΩ for neutral kaon photoproduction reactions from threshold up to a c.m. energy of 1855MeV, focussing specifically on the $ \gamma p\rightarrow K^0\Sigma^+$γp→K0Σ+, $ \gamma n\rightarrow K^0\Lambda$γn→K0Λ, and $ \gamma n\rightarrow K^0 \Sigma^0$γn→K0Σ0 reactions. Our results for $ \gamma n\rightarrow K^0 \Sigma^0$γn→K0Σ0 are the first-ever measurements for that reaction. These data will provide insight into the properties of $ N^{\ast}$N* resonances and, in particular, will lead to an improved knowledge about those states that couple only weakly to the $ \pi N$πN channel. Integrated cross sections were extracted by fitting the differential cross sections for each reaction as a series of Legendre polynomials and our results are compared with prior experimental results and theoretical predictions.

Abstract A brief feasibility study was performed to produce thermal spray coatings using gas atomized powders of Cu47Ti34-xZr11Ni8Six, where x=0 and 1. These alloys have previously been shown to be capable of forming metallic glasses having thick (1-2 cm) cross sections because they can be cooled from the melt at relatively low cooling rates (e.g., 100-102Ks-1). The properties of these metallic glasses include high strength, high elasticity and high fracture toughness. Amorphous plasma arc sprayed coatings were produced which were close in composition to the starting powders, and exhibited comparable glass transition and crystallization behavior. The amorphous structure of the as-sprayed coatings was used as a source for forming a range of partially devitrified and fully crystallized structures. The average hardness of the coatings increased from around 6 GPa to near 10 GPa as the degree of crystallization increased.

A microscopic analysis of the optical potentials (OPs) and cross sections of elastic scattering of 8B on 12C, 58Ni, and 208Pb targets at energies 20 < E < 170 MeV and 12,14Be on 12C at 56 MeV/nucleon is carried out. The real part of the OP is calculated by a folding procedure and the imaginary part is obtained on the base of the high-energy approximation (HEA). The density distributions of 8B evaluated within the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) model and the three-cluster model (3CM) are used to construct the potentials. The 14Be densities obtained in the framework of the the generator coordinate method (GCM) are used to calculate the optical potentials, while for the same purpose both the VMC model and GCM densities of 12Be are used. In the hybrid model developed and explored in our previous works, the only free parameters are the depths of the real and imaginary parts of OP obtained by fitting the experimental data. The use of HEA to estimate the imaginary OP at energies just above the Coulomb barrier is discussed. In addition, cluster model, in which 8B consists of a p-halo and the 7Be core, is applied to calculate the breakup cross sections of 8B nucleus on 9Be, 12C, and 197Au targets, as well as momentum distributions of 7Be fragments. A good agreement of the theoretical results with the available experimental data is obtained. It is concluded that the reaction studies performed in this work may provide supplemental information on the internal spatial structure of the proton- and neutron-halo nuclei.

The paper presents the results of measurement of the total cross sections for reactions 4,6He + Si and 6,7,9Li + Si in the beam energy range 5−50 A⋅MeV. The enhancements of the total cross sections for reaction 6He + Si compared with reaction 4He + Si, and 9Li + Si compared with reactions 6,7Li + Si have been observed. The performed microscopic analysis of total cross sections for reactions 6He + Si and 9Li + Si based on numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for external neutrons of projectile nuclei 6He and 9Li yielded good agreement with experimental data.

&lt;p&gt;Mass movements play an important role in landscape evolution of high mountain areas such as the Himalayas. Yet, establishing numerical age control and reconstructing transport dynamics of past events is challenging. To fill this research gap, we investigated the potential of Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating and tracing methods. OSL dating analyses of Himalayan sediments is extremely challenging due to two main reasons: i) the OSL sensitivity of quartz, typically the mineral of choice for dating sediments younger than 100 ka, is poor, and ii) highly turbid conditions during mass movement transport hamper sufficient OSL signal resetting prior to deposition which eventually results in age overestimation. In this study, we aim to bring OSL dating to the test in an extremely challenging environment. First, we assess the applicability of single-grain feldspar dating of mass movement deposits in the Pokhara valley, Nepal. Second, we exploit the poor bleaching mechanisms to get insight into the sediment dynamics of this paleo-mass movement through bleaching proxies. The Pokhara valley is a unique setting for our case-study, considering the availability of an extensive independent radiocarbon dataset (Schwanghart et al., 2016) as a geochronological benchmark.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Single-grain infrared stimulated luminescence signals were measured at 50&amp;#176;C (IRSL50) and post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence signals at 150&amp;#176;C (pIRIR-150). As expected, results show that the IRSL50 signal is better bleached than the pIRIR150 signal. A bootstrapped Minimum Age Model (bMAM) is applied to retrieve the youngest subpopulation to estimate the palaeodose. However, burial ages calculated based on this palaeodose overestimate the radiocarbon ages by an average factor of ~8 (IRSL50) and ~35 (pIRIR150). This shows that dating of the Pokhara Formation with our single-grain approach was not successful. Large inheritances in combination with the scatter in the single-grain dose distributions show that the sediments have been transported prior to deposition under extreme limited light exposure which corresponds well with the highly turbid nature of the sediment laden flood and debris flows that emplaced the Pokhara Formation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To investigate the sediment transport dynamics in more detail we studied three bleaching proxies: the percentage of grains in saturation (2D0 criteria), percentage of well-bleached grains (2&amp;#963; range of bMAM-De) and the overdispersion (OD). Neither of the three bleaching proxies indicate a spatial relationship with run-out distances of the mass movement deposits. We interpret this as virtual absence of bleaching during transport, which reflects the catastrophic nature of the event. While single-grain feldspar dating did not provide reliable burial ages of the Pokhara mass movement deposits, our approach has great potential to provide insight in sediment transport dynamics of high-impact low-frequency mass movement events in mountainous region.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;References&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Schwanghart, W., Bernhardt, A., Stolle, A., Hoelzmann, P., Adhikari, B.
