Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the influence of sealer and light-curing unit on regional bond strength of resin composite to the weakened roots. Ninety roots of incisors were experimentally weakened, subjected to biomechanical preparation and filled with either Endofill, AH Plus or MTA Fillapex The roots were desobturated e reinforced with resin composite and fiber post light-activated with one of the light sources: halogen at 600 mW/ cm2 (QTH-600), LED at 800 mW/ cm2 (LED-800) and LED at 1500 mW/ cm2 (LED-1500). The roots were sectioned in slices from cervical, middle and apical root-reinforcement regions and analyzed by push out test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Bond strength data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey´s test (α=0.05). Specimens filled with AH Plus had higher bond strength, followed by MTA Fillapex and Endofill (p<0.05). For light-curing unit, LED-1500 presented superior bond strength than LED-800, which was higher than QTH-600 (p<0.05). The cervical region had the greatest mean values (p<0.05) while apical part showed the lowest bond strength (p<0.05). CLMS revealed remaining filling material in the dentinal tubules for all groups. The eugenol-containing sealer (Endofill) compromised the push-out bond strength of composite resin to the root dentin. Bond strength was favored in the cervical region, and when LED-1500 was used.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different instruments and mechanisms of agitation of the irrigating solution on the penetration by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and the bond strength (BS) of the filling material to the dentin by push-out test. Human premolars were distributed in two experimental groups (n=30), according to the instrumentation system: ProTaper Next (PN) or XP-endo Shaper (XS) and three irrigation protocol (n=10): NaviTip (Nv), XP-endo Finisher (XF), passive ultrasonic irrigation/ XP-endo Finisher (PUIXF). The 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA were the irrigating solutions used. The filling was performed using a lateral condensation technique, with AH Plus added to 0.1% rodhamine B. The roots were sectioned, obtaining 2 slices for each third of the root. The first slice was submitted to the sealer penetration analysis and the push-out test. The second slice was submitted to qualitative analysis (SEM) of the union interface. For the penetration (%) Tukey showed that PNXF (82.38±13.48), PNPUIXF (82.48± 12.02), XSXF (82.24±11.28) and XSPUIXP (86.23±10.45) presented the highest values, different (p<0.05) from PNNv (68.29±15.12) and XSNv (71.41±16.50). The BS (MPa) test evidenced that in the cervical third, PNPF (4.92±1.04) and XPSPF (5.03±0.70) obtained the highest values differing from the others groups (p<0.05). CSLM and SEM showed greater penetration of the sealer on the entire length of the root canal when the irrigation solution was stirred. In conclusion that the association PUI and XP-endo Finisher favored the penetration and bond strength of the filling material to the root dentin.

Abstract This study correlated the bond strength (BS) and dentin penetration of different sealers by push-out test and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) analysis. Forty-five root canals were prepared according to the crown-down technique and filled with gutta-percha associated to the following sealers (n=15): Endofill, AH Plus and MTA Fillapex. Five canals of each group were filled with the sealers added with 0.1% Rhodamine B dye. Next, the specimens were transversely sectioned and submitted to the push-out test (n=10) and CLSM analysis (n=5). The BS data showed the following means (MPa) and standard deviation: AH Plus (4.17±1.86); MTA Fillapex (3.13±1.96) and Endofill (2.10±1.03). Statistical analysis (two-way ANOVA, α=0.05) showed significant difference among sealers (p<0.001) and root canal thirds (p<0.001). The BS results of Endofill and MTA Fillapex were statistically similar (p>0.05), however, they were statistically different from AH Plus (p<0.001). The regional analysis of BS showed similarity between middle and apical thirds (p>0.05), and both were different from coronal portion (p<0.001). CLSM analysis verified tags formation in all groups and higher penetration of the specimens filled with AH Plus (p<0.05). The Kendall test (correlation between BS to dentin and sealer penetration into dentinal tubules) and the Pearson test (between failures pattern and sealer penetration into dentinal tubules) did not show correlation between the variables evaluated for all the tested sealers (p>0.05). AH Plus group had higher BS to dentin, and deeper tags formation than the other sealers. There was no significant correlation between BS and intratubular penetration of the tested sealers.

Abstract The influence of root canal filling techniques on the penetration of AH Plus into dentinal tubules was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and the impact on the bond strength of the filling material on the root dentin was evaluated using the push-out test. Roots of the maxillary central incisors (n=40) were prepared with ProTaper Universal and assigned to four groups: lateral condensation, vertical compaction, modified Tagger hybrid and single cone. After root canal filling with gutta-percha and AH Plus, along with the addition of 0.01% fluorescein, the roots were cut into 2-mm slices. CLSM was performed on the first slice of each root third, followed by the push-out test. The second slice was analyzed under SEM. ANOVA demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the root canal filling techniques and the root thirds (p<0.05). For percent penetration, Tukey’s test showed that the vertical compaction (91.77±13.51), lateral condensation (89.18±10.91) and modified Tagger hybrid (87.53±15.42) presented the highest values, which significantly differed (p<0.05) from those of the single cone (78.19±22.46). For bond strength (MPa), lateral condensation (3.42±0.54) and vertical compaction (3.47±0.53) had the highest values (p<0.05), while the modified Tagger hybrid (2.19±0.41) and single cone (0.54±0.21) had the lowest. In conclusion, the lateral condensation, vertical compaction and Modified Tagger’s hybrid techniques resulted in greater penetration and bond strength to the intra-radicular dentin.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength (BS) of different self-etching adhesive systems to bovine dentin.METHODS: For this purpose, 50 teeth were flattened with silicon carbide abrasive papers and randomly divided into 5 groups: SB – Single Bond Plus; Group AEO – Adper Easy One; Group ADH – AdheSE; Group ASE – Adper SE Plus and Group Clear – Clear Fill. After adhesive system application, 5 Tygon cylinders (1.8 mm×2 mm) were placed on the vestibular surface of each tooth, filled with resin composite (Filtek Z350) and light activated. Three composite resin cylinders were fabricated for each bovine crown, one being located in the incisal region, one in the middle third and one in the cervical region, totaling 30 composite resin test specimens (TS) for each group. The TS were submitted to the microshear bond strength test in a Universal Test Machine  Kratos), at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min.RESULTS: The BS was calculated and analyzed by ANOVA (one-way) and Tukey’s test (p<0.05). The highest BS values were obtained in Group SB and there were no significant differences between the adhesive systems tested in the middle and cervical thirds. In the fracture type analysis it was found that adhesive failure was dominant for all groups.CONCLUSION: The conventional two-step adhesive system SB presented the highest bond strength mean to bovine dentin for all the regions.

SUMMARY Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of fiber post customization on the bond strength (24 hours and 6 months), resin cement thickness, and dentinal penetrability of Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose – RelyX ARC (AS-RA), RelyX U200 (R2), and Scotchbond Universal – RelyX Ultimate (SU-RU) cementation systems to root dentin from the cervical-, middle-, and apical-thirds of the post space. Methods: One hundred twenty bovine incisors were endodontically treated. After post space preparation, the roots were divided into six groups, according to the luting protocols (AS–RA, R2, SU– RU) and the type of fiber post [noncustomized post (NC) and customized post (C)]. Customization procedures were peformed using a resin composite (Z350 XT). 24 hours (n=60) or 6 months later (n=60), specimens from the cervical-, middle-, and apical-thirds of the post space were submitted to cementation system thickness measurement, bond strength evaluation, and dentinal penetrability analysis with Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). Failure mode was classified as adhesive, cohesive, or mixed. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05). Results: Cementation protocols with customized fiber posts presented the lowest cementation system thickness, regardless of the cementation system or post space-third (p&lt;0.05), and the highest bond strength values (p&lt;0.05), regardless of the third space (p&gt;0.05), for both periods (24 hours or 6 months). The comparison of push-out bond strength values between 24 hours and 6 months showed a reduction in all groups for the cervical-third (p&lt;0.05). For the middle-third, only noncustomized groups showed reduction (p&lt;0.05). For the apical-third, no reduction was observed (p&gt;0.05). Conclusions: Anatomical customization favored both the bond strength of cements to dentin and the dentinal penetrability, but with lower cementation system thickness, regardless of cement composition and adhesive strategy.

The study assessed the bonding performance of three universal adhesives on desensitized dentin with etch-and-rinse mode or self-etch mode after nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp)-based desensitizers application. Simulated sensitive dentin specimens were prepared and separated into four groups: no treatment as the negative control, groups desensitized by Biorepair toothpaste, Dontodent toothpaste, or nHAp paste. Three universal adhesives of All-Bond Universal, Single Bond Universal, and Clearfil Universal Bond with etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode were bonded to the desensitized dentin specimens separately, followed by resin composite build-ups. Micro-tensile bond strength was measured using a micro-tensile tester. The wettability of desensitized dentin was evaluated by the contact angle of the adhesives. Resin infiltration was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Dentin tubular occlusion and nanoleakage were observed by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode of each adhesive showed similar bond strength when bonding to nHAp-based desensitized dentin. The dentin surface was partially covered by desensitizers after desensitization. Compared with the self-etch mode, stronger demineralization and more reopened dentin tubules were observed in the etch-and-rinse mode after acid etching; longer resin tags and more nanoleakage in the resin–dentin interface were observed when using the etch-and-rinse mode. When bonding to nHAp-based desensitized dentin with universal adhesives, no significant difference in bond strength was found between self-etch mode or etch-and-rinse mode; while the latter produced more nanoleakage in the resin–dentin interfaces.

Introduction: Endodontic treatment includes different phases like controlling the growth of microorganism, thorough cleaning and shaping and fluid-tight seal. Sealer plays an important role in Root Canal Treatment (RCT). Sealer fills the space between filling material and dentin. Sealer also acts as a lubricant. Sealer has ability to fill the spaces and prevent microleakege from the root canal. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is a calcium silicate based sealer which has high radiopacity, low solubility and good antibacterial activity. Aim: To evaluate push-out bond strength of MTA as a root canal sealer. Materials and Methods: Studies which were published in English, studies with different years of publication were included. Studies which includes bond strength of MTA as Endodontic Sealer to dentinal wall were also included. Studies used in this review were in-vitro studies and clinical trials. Studies showing tissue toxicity, biocompatibility of MTA were excluded. Also, case reports and in-vivo studies were excluded. All abstracts as well as full texts were studied. PubMed/Medline, Web of Science and Scopus were used for this study. Keywords used were “root canal sealer”, “push-out bond strength”, “MTA”. Total 18 articles were collected. But only five articles fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. So only five articles were included in this study and discussed in detail. Results: According to the results, of articles which were chosen for this study stated that MTA can be used as an endodontic sealer though it shows lesser push-out bond strength when compared with different newer sealers. Conclusion: In this systematic review, only one in-vitro study showed that Proroot MTA used as root canal sealer exhibits high push-out bond strength than other sealers like MTA Fillapex sealer and AH plus sealer. While MTA Fillapex show lesser push-out bond strength in comparison with other sealers like Proroot MTA sealer, AH plus, Endo CPM sealer. So this systematic review partially fulfills the hypothesis as it gives a utility of Proroot MTA as a root canal sealer.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the filling effectiveness and dentinal penetration of the sealers AH Plus, Pulp Canal Sealer EWT, Sealapex and MTA Fillapex applied according to the vertical condensation technique using thermoplastic gutta-percha. Forty single-rooted teeth were selected. After chemical-mechanical preparation and root-canal filling, sections of the root (2, 4 and 6 mm from the apex) were obtained and analyzed by stereo microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed. With regard to the assessment of void spaces in the filling material at 2 mm from the apex, the sealers showed similar results, but at 4 and 6 mm from the apex, MTA Fillapex had inferior performance compared to AH Plus (at 4 mm), Pulp Canal Sealer EWT (at 4 and 6 mm) and Sealapex (at 6 mm) (p<0.05). With regard to the penetration into dentinal tubules at 2 mm from the apex, the sealers also showed similar results, but at 4 and 6 mm Pulp Canal Sealer EWT had an inferior performance compared to MTA Fillapex and AH Plus, respectively (p<0.05). All four sealers were found to be similar regarding adaptation of the filling material to the root canal walls, except the MTA Fillapex, which showed failures at 4 and 6 mm from the root apex. With regard to the ability to penetrate into the dentinal tubules, the sealers were found to be equivalent, except for the Pulp Canal Sealer EWT as it had poorer results at 4 and 6 mm compared to MTA Fillapex and AH Plus, respectively.

The aim of this study was to investigate the suitability of rhodamine B dye staining of an epoxy resin sealer (AH Plus) and calcium-silicate-based sealers (Total Fill BC Sealer, BioRoot RCS) to represent the penetration depth of the sealers into dentinal tubules after root canal obturation. In a three-step process, (1) leaching of rhodamine B from sealers into a buffer solution, (2) passive penetration of leached rhodamine B into dentinal tubules, and (3) conformity of rhodamine B penetration assessed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and sealer penetration assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in root-canal-filled teeth, were evaluated. Rhodamine B dye massively leached out of Total Fill BC Sealer and BioRoot RCS into the phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). A pinkish coloration of AH Plus was found after contact with PBS. Leached rhodamine B dye passively penetrated dentinal tubules from all three sealers when placed on root dentin. No correlation was observed between sealer penetration in SEM and rhodamine B penetration in CLSM. Staining of sealers using rhodamine B is an inadequate method with which to evaluate sealer penetration depth into dentinal tubules, as it overestimates the penetration of sealers into root dentin tubules.

To evaluate the bond strength of different universal adhesives on deciduous tooth dentineand their relationship with the composition and potential of hydrogen (pH). Methods: An in vitromicro push-out test on 150 samples (n = 50) per group per adhesive, namely, Adhese Universal(ADH; Ivoclar Vivadent), Futurabond U (FUT; Voco GmbH) (Test), and Scotchbond Universal withpre-conditioning (SCO; 3M) (Control), to record bond strength (BS) and type of adhesive failure.Results: The results of the different adhesives (megapascals (MPa)) varied, showing no statisticalsignificance. The corresponding averages are in MPa: ADH, 13.66 2.81; FUT, 14.48 2.88; SCO,14.98 3.96. Additionally, the frequency of type of failure was as follows: mixed (60.7%), adhesive(27.3%), and cohesive (12%). Conclusions: SCO, with a pH of 2.7, showed greater resistance tofracture, while FUT, with a pH of 2.3 and no pre-conditioning, approached the same values, being aone-step adhesive. No relationship was found between failure and type of adhesive.
