ABSTRACT The aims of this research was to estimate genetic parameters of Eucalyptus macarthurii progenies and to predict genetic gain for different selection methods. In order to evaluate the gains, eleven progenies tests were studied. These tests were installed in 1997, in randomized blocks design, in two sites, with 5 replicates of five plants per plot. The progenies were evaluated, from the first to the eighth year, regarding the variable diameter at breast height (DBH). The genetic parameters were estimated using the mixed model procedure (REML/BLUP). The selection of the progenies for establishing a Clonal Seed Orchard was based on the analysis by location, joint analysis and on the harmonic mean of the relative performance of genotypic values (HMRPGV) with different selection intensities among and within families: three, four, five and six individuals per progeny with the selection of the top 30 individuals, taking into consideration the effective population size (N e ). The best age to carry out the selection was seven years old, however, early selection can be made from age two onwards. Each environment characteristics influenced progenies phenotypic expression, so the higher gains in balance with N e , were estimated with the selection of individuals for each site, and the selection of five or six individuals per progeny.

The genotype x environment interaction represents one of the major selection challenges due to the difficulty in identifying effectively superior genotypes. The present study aimed at estimating genetic parameters and selecting genotypes of early Carioca beans by analyzing simultaneous attributes, including yield, adaptability, and stability. In the agricultural year of 2015 and 2016, three trials were conducted, using a randomized block design, with three repetitions each, in the Agreste and Sertao regions of Pernambuco State. The genetic parameters were estimated using the mixed model procedure, and the selection was based on the harmonic mean of the relative performance of genetic values (MHPRVG, abbreviation in Portuguese) method. The environments influenced the phenotypic expression of the bean genotypes during both years, setting a specific adaptation. The mean heritability of the genotypes regarding yield exhibited low magnitude values  in the trials of 2015 (5.78%) and 2016 (13.77%), indicating costly conditions for the selection of the improved genotypes. Genotype CNFC 15856 was selected, considering the genetic gain predicted for yield, by the average and specific performance in the three environments, and by the simultaneous attributes of yield, adaptability, and stability. The MHPRVG method enables the optimized selection of genotypes considering yield, stability, and adaptability; therefore, it should be included in the recommended selective criteria for agronomically superior genotypes in commercial plantations.

A paternity analysis using five microsatellite markers was conducted in a Danish clonal seed orchard with 13 Abies nordmanniana (Stev.) Spach clones. The purpose was to investigate potential seed-orchard dysfunctions, with special emphasis on nonequal pollen contributions and selfing. Male paternity was found for 232 seedlings germinated from seeds collected on three ramets, each of eight clones, and the relative contribution of each clone to the gene pool of male gametes was calculated. Furthermore, 49 ramets were genotyped to check for erroneous grafting. The effect of an unbalanced male contribution was quantified by means of two measures: (1) the status number (NS), which reflects buildup of coancestry in the seed-orchard crop as a result of a low number of clones and an unequal male contribution, and (2) the asymptotic variance effective population number (Ne(v)). The contributions by pollen donors from the 13 clones were highly skewed. Three clones were fathers to more than 75% of the progenies, while making up only 24% of the ramets in the seed orchard. Four clones sired no progenies at all. The unequal contribution on the male side corresponded to NS = 4.2 and Ne(v) = 5.8. Some selfing was observed, which may give rise to concern if clonal seed orchards with few clones are established. The estimated maximum pollen contamination from outside the seed orchard was 4.3%. No grafting–labelling errors were identified.

The objective of this work was to assess the genetic parameters and to estimate genetic gains in young rubber tree progenies. The experiments were carried out during three years, in a randomized block design, with six replicates and ten plants per plot, in three representative Hevea crop regions of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Twenty-two progenies were evaluated, from three to five years old, for rubber yield and annual girth growth. Genetic gain was estimated with the multi-effect index (MEI). Selection by progenies means provided greater estimated genetic gain than selection based on individuals, since heritability values of progeny means were greater than the ones of individual heritability, for both evaluated variables, in all the assessment years. The selection of the three best progenies for rubber yield provided a selection gain of 1.28 g per plant. The genetic gains estimated with MEI using data from early assessments (from 3 to 5-year-old) were generally high for annual girth growth and rubber yield. The high genetic gains for annual girth growth in the first year of assessment indicate that progenies can be selected at the beginning of the breeding program. Population effective size was consistent with the three progenies selected, showing that they were not related and that the population genetic variability is ensured. Early selection with the genetic gains estimated by MEI can be made on rubber tree progenies.

The objective of this paper was to estimate the genetic parameters and additive genetic values in segregating populations of papaya using the mixed model methodology. Two F2 populations from Tainung and Calimosa hybrids were evaluated. The experimental design was an augmented block with four replicates, and Golden and Calimosa cultivars were the common treatment. Estimates of individual heritability were high for fruit length (FL) and weight (FW), moderate for fruit diameter (FD), and low for total soluble solids (TSS) and fruit firmness (FF). Considering FF and TSS as main traits for selection, genotypes of Calimosa-F2 population showed better performance to FF, but worse concerning TSS. It was selected 18.3% and 24.6% of plants from Tainung-F2 and Calimosa-F2 populations, respectively. Negative correlation between TSS and FF was not able to reduce the genetic gains. The segregating populations from Calimosa hybrid are more promising for the selection of papaya lines.

The genetic gain and gene diversity of seed crops from a 1.5-generation clonal seed orchard of Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc. were estimated under consideration of parental genetic values and fecundity variation. Fecundity variation among clones was estimated for 5 consecutive years (2010–2014) as the sibling coefficient, which was drawn from clonal contribution to the total production of seed conelet. To monitor gene diversity, status number was estimated by the integration of fecundity variation and group coancestry. Group coancestry was calculated as the average of genetic relatedness (coancestry) among orchard clones. The averages of conelet production were high in 2010 and 2011, moderate in 2013 and 2014, and poor in 2012 with a grand mean of 13.7. Correlation analysis showed that good conelet producers consistently gave good production. Cumulative distribution of clonal conelet production was presented as a function of the total conelet yield, and this distribution indicated deviation from the expected clonal equal production. Group coancesrtry was 0.0096, indicating minimal loss of gene diversity. Status number and genetic gain were higher in good than in poor conelet production years, highlighting the importance of fecundity variation in determining the genetic gain and gene diversity of seed orchard crops.

Abstract Genetic gain and diversity, expressed by status number, of seed crops from a clonal seed orchard of Pinus thunbergii were estimated considering selection, fertility variation and pollen contamination, and compared for different management alternatives (selective harvest, genetic thinning and combination of both options). Management variables included the proportion of clones left after selective harvest and/or genetic thinning. The impact on genetic gain and diversity of seed crops was quantified as a function of the quantity and quality of gene flow from outside the seed orchard. Genetic gain varied with the proportion of selected or thinned clones. Genetic thinning by means of truncation selection of clones resulted in a large decrease in status number, which was accompanied by greater genetic gain than achieved by selective harvest alone. As expected, gene flow from outside the seed orchard greatly increased status number of the seed crop at higher rates of pollen contamination under all management options. The formulae and results of the present study could be used for identifying favorable selection intensity and alternatives for orchard management.

Summary In 1978 a 10 ha clonal seed orchard of black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) was established in the area of Koumani in the western part of Peleponnesos, Greece. The orchard comprises 52 clones derived from intensively selected plus trees in the natural forest of black pine of Peloponnesos. In 1991 three open pollinated progeny tests were established in Peloponnesos, proximal to the villages of Raches, Vlachokerasia and Vamvakou. Seedlings from 52 families including a commercial check (CC) were planted in each one of the three locations. Assessments were made when the trees were 4, 7 and 9 years respectively, with the following results. The variation among families for growth characteristics were highly significant in all locations examined. In the combined analyses of variance over the three locations, significant differences among families were also detected, while the family x location interaction effect was not significant. This indicates that the seed produced from the seed orchard can be freely used over the environments of the three experimental plantings, which are representative of the broad area of Peloponnesos. Narrow sense heritability estimates on individual tree basis (h2) were variable depending on the characteristic, age of assessment and the location of the experimental plantings. The estimates of h2 in Vlachokerasia for height (HT) were 0.21, 0.40 and 0.43 at the ages of 4, 7 and 9 years respectively. In Raches the corresponding h2 values for HT were nearly the same in all ages (0.29, 0.28 and 0.31 at 4, 7 and 9 years respectively) and stable but little higher (0.31, 0.28 and 0.31) at the Vamvakou experimental planting. The heritability values for HT estimated over the three location, were relatively low (0.25, 0.23 and 0.19) at the ages 4, 7 and 9 years respectively. Realized genetic gains were calculated for growth characteristics at the age of 9 years, by comparing the performance of the improved (selected) materials to unimproved materials (CC). For the first stage of selection (selection made in natural stands) gain of 6.0% for HT, 8.0% for diameter breast height (DBH) and 24% for volume were estimated. When 20% of the clones, with the lower breeding values are removed from the seed orchard (genetic thinning), an additional gain of 2% for HT, 3% for DBH and 8% for volume over the unrogued seed orchard is resulted. Thus, the total genetic gain from the genetically tested, first generation seed orchard of black pine at Koumani is estimated as 8% for HT, 11% for DBH and 32% for volume. These results indicate that improvement of black pine by selection, establishment of seed orchard and progeny testing the clones, is a very promising profitable operation.

The development of female and male flowering among 20 clones was studied in a clonal seed orchard of lodgepole pine (Pinuscontorta var. latifolia Engelm.) in central Sweden. Flowering in relation to height, crown volume, and pruning was also studied. Twelve years after grafting (7 years after field planting), female flowering averaged 43 strobili per graft while male strobili were few. Eighteen years from grafting, the number of female and male strobuli were 143 and 142, respectively. The female effective population size was around 80% of maximum and was stable during the whole period. The male effective population size increased from 25 to 68%. Index of monoecy increased from 58 to 81% of maximum. The results indicate that at around 18 years after grafting, female and male flowering were satisfactorily distributed among the clones. There were no clonal correlations between male flowering and female flowering, while correlations between years for those traits separately were strong. Male flowering showed stronger correlation to the size of the graft than female flowering.

Heritabilities and correlations between the length of reproductive life and number of parturitions during lifetime in mice were estimated from bivariate full-sib mixed-model analysis. Heritability estimates from sire components were low (0.01) for the two traits and those from dam components were slightly higher (0.06 and 0.05). Estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.89 to 0.99. It was concluded that the two traits are virtually the same trait biologically. Implication of these results for selection of lifetime production in mice and dairy cattle is discussed. Key words: Genetic parameters, reproductive trait, bivariate analysis
