Sprayable formulation of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) was tested as a preharvest application on European pears to determine the best timing and rate of 1-MCP application for maintaining fruit firmness and quality of trees during harvest and in storage after harvest. Two rates of 1-MCP, 0.06 and 0.13 g⋅L−1 active ingredient (a.i.) (minimum and maximum rates, respectively), were sprayed 1 week and 2 weeks before commercial harvest on two cultivars, Bosc and Comice, in 2017 and 2018. After 2 months in cold storage (0 ± 1 °C), differences in fruit firmness of both cultivars were observed among treatments. For ‘Bosc’, fruit treated with both rates 1 week before harvest were 50% firmer than nontreated control fruit. For ‘Comice’, fruit treated with the maximum rate both 2 weeks and 1 week before commercial harvest were 46% and 31% firmer than nontreated control fruit, respectively. However, after 4 months in storage, no differences in fruit firmness of both ‘Bosc’ and ‘Comice’ were observed among treatments. The sprayable 1-MCP application applied 2 weeks before commercial harvest also affected the fruit firmness on trees. The maximum rate of 1-MCP treatment consistently maintained the fruit firmness by 5.0 N compared with fruit treated with the minimum rate and nontreated controls. This effect was significant until 1 week after commercial harvest for both cultivars and until 2 weeks after commercial harvest for ‘Bosc’. The poststorage fruit firmness and overall eating quality of ‘Bosc’ were unaffected by the maximum rate of 1-MCP application as well as the extended harvest time. However, for ‘Comice’, the overall eating quality was negatively impacted by 1-MCP treatments. This study suggests that the maximum rate (0.13 g⋅L−1 a.i.) of 1-MCP application 2 weeks before commercial harvest maintains the fruit firmness of ‘Bosc’ for at least 2 weeks more and offers an extended harvest window for better preharvest management. Furthermore, this treatment improves the physiological fruit quality such as senescence scald during the poststorage period without significantly affecting the poststorage ripening of ‘Bosc’ after 4 months of storage.

Strawberry is a soft fruit with short postharvest life, due to a rapid loss of firmness. Pectin methylesterase (PME)-mediated cell wall remodeling is important to determine fruit firmness and softening. Previously, we have verified the essential role of FvPME38 in regulation of PME-mediated strawberry fruit softening. However, the regulatory network involved in PME-mediated fruit softening is still largely unknown. Here, we identified an R2R3-type MYB transcription factor FvMYB79, which activates the expression level of FvPME38, thereby accelerating fruit softening. During fruit development, FvMYB79 co-expressed with FvPME38, and this co-expression pattern was opposite to the change of fruit firmness in the fruit of ‘Ruegen’ which significantly decreased during fruit developmental stages and suddenly became very low after the color turning stage. Via transient transformation, FvMYB79 could significantly increase the transcriptional level of FvPME38, leading to a decrease of firmness and acceleration of fruit ripening. In addition, silencing of FvMYB79 showed an insensitivity to ABA-induced fruit ripening, suggesting a possible involvement of FvMYB79 in the ABA-dependent fruit softening process. Our findings suggest FvMYB79 acts as a novel regulator during strawberry ripening via transcriptional activation of FvPME38, which provides a novel mechanism for improvement of strawberry fruit firmness.

The use of plant growth regulators that increase ethylene production is a common strategy to anticipate fruit ripening, increase peel color, and reduce the number of collections to complete the harvest of the fruits. Besides, this strategy may come true as a helping technique for the farmers to reduce costs with manpower, increasing overall profitability. This work aimed to evaluate the application of several concentrations of ethephon, associated with boric acid, on the anticipation of ripening of ‘Fortune’ plums, cultivated in Serra Gaúcha region, South Brazil. The study was carried out in a commercial orchard during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 harvests. It was used a completely randomized design with six treatments and four replicates; each replicate was composed of four plants. The following parameters were evaluated: the amount of fruits collected in each harvest, average fruit mass, diameter, length, firmness, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, SS/TA ratio, total phenolic compounds, and total anthocyanins. According to the results, the application of ethephon was capable of hastening and homogenizing partially plum ripening, but it also caused a reduction of anthocyanin and phenolic compounds contents and fruit firmness. On the other hand, the application of boric acid increased fruit firmness. From an economic standpoint, the pre-harvest application of ethephon may be interesting to reduce manpower requirements during harvest by an earlier harvest and by reducing the number of harvest cycles.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of grafting, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), and their interaction on the nutritional composition of bell pepper plants. The treatments evaluated included grafted and non-grafted pepper plants with four concentrations of ZnO NPs (0, 10, 20, 30 mg L−1) applied to the foliage. The following parameters were evaluated: content of N, P, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, total antioxidants, ascorbic acid, total phenols, glutathione, total proteins, fruit firmness, and total soluble solids. Grafting increased the content of N 12.2%, P 15.9%, K+ 26.7%, Mg2+ 20.3%, Mn2+ 34.7%, Zn2+ 19.5%, Fe2+ 18.2%, Cu2+ 11.5%, antioxidant capacity 2.44%, ascorbic acid 4.63%, total phenols 1.33%, glutathione 7.18%, total proteins 1.08%, fruit firmness 8.8%. The application of 30 mg L−1 ZnO NPs increased the content of N 12.3%, P 25.9%, Mg2+ 36.8%, Mn2+ 42.2%, Zn2+ 27%, Fe2+ 45%, antioxidant activity 13.95%, ascorbic acid 26.77%, total phenols 10.93%, glutathione 11.46%, total proteins 11.01%, and fruit firmness 17.7% compared to the control. The results obtained demonstrate the influence of the use of grafts and ZnO NPs as tools that could improve the quality and nutrient content in fruits of bell pepper crops.

Fruit firmness is an important economical trait in sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) where the change of this trait is related to cell wall degradation. Xyloglucan endotransglycosylase/hydrolase (XTH) and polygalacturonases (PGs) are critical cell-wall-modifying enzymes that occupy a crucial position in fruit ripening and softening. Herein, we identified 18 XTHs and 45 PGs designated PavXTH1-18 and PavPG1-45 based on their locations in the genome of sweet cherry. We provided a systematical overview of PavXTHs and PavPGs, including phylogenetic relationships, conserved motifs, and expression profiling of these genes. The results showed that PavXTH14, PavXTH15 and PavPG38 were most likely to participated in fruit softening owing to the substantial increment in expression during fruit development and ripening. Furthermore, the phytohormone ABA, MeJA, and ethephon significantly elevated the expression of PavPG38 and PavXTH15, and thus promoted fruit softening. Importantly, transient expression PavXTH14, PavXTH15 and PavPG38 in cherry fruits significantly reduced the fruit firmness, and the content of various cell wall components including hemicellulose and pectin significantly changed correspondingly in the transgenic fruit. Taken together, these results present an extensive analysis of XTHs and PGs in sweet cherry and provide potential targets for breeding softening-resistant sweet cherry cultivars via manipulating cell wall-associated genes.

Pomological characteristics and consumer acceptability of four scab-resistant apple cultivars (‘Topaz’, ‘Florina’, ‘Goldstar’ and ‘Golden Orange’) and standard commercial cultivar ‘Golden Delicious’ were investigated. Consumer acceptability consisted of rating fruit samples on Likert scales measuring appearance, flavour, size, sweetness, acidity, crispiness, juiciness, skin texture and general impression. Consumers better evaluated the cultivar ‘Topaz’ sensory characteristics of flavour, juiciness, taste and general impression than other evaluated scab-resistant apple cultivars and the cultivar ‘Golden Delicious’. ‘Golden Delicious’ got good grades for appearance, size and sweetness. ‘Topaz’ also had the best pomological characteristic related to measured fruit firmness, contents of soluble solids and organic acids. It can be concluded that only the cultivar ‘Topaz’ among the scab-resistant apple cultivars achieved a good consumer assessment.
