Science teachers are the main professionals in schools who address health-related subjects, though food and nutrition education (FNE) projects are mainly planned by health professionals, especially nutritionists. The objective of this study is to create a transdisciplinary approximation between scientific research fields and practical fields from the analysis of an integrated case study conducted in Brazilian schools. In 2011, 10 days of observation were programmed in six schools in five cities. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with different social actors and data was analyzed using the complex thinking theory and the bricolage method of educational research. Planting of vegetable gardens or projects to improve table manners during mealtimes were identified in the schools. The results describe educational approaches used by science teachers to include FNE in school activities, even when not described in the official curriculum. Health professionals can identify actions to support health education in schools starting with that already undertaken by science teachers. The successful initiatives also involved professionals with practical knowledge and experience of life.

This study examined the threat pose by schools operating a joint section under UBE to academic activities of both the pupils and students. The research method adopted for this study is the qualitative descriptive design of survey type. Upper basic school I, II, and III students of 15 purposively selected schools operating joint section Universal Basic Education System in Ilorin metropolis were selected for the study. Researchers-designed structured interviews with content validity and 0.77 reliability index of the instrument was the only instrument used to elicit the needed data from the respondents. The findings of the study revealed that: upper basic school students were seriously distracted the students it is meant to cater for in many ways. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that; the same time should be allocated to both sections for both school activities since they use the same compound to decrease distraction and confusion of the students or better still, sections should be structured in different locations to reduce overpopulation in the compound thereby making teaching and learning more effective.

Purpose The current Indian secondary school curriculum has been criticised for its failure to deliver relevant skills-based food and nutrition education for adolescents. The purpose of this paper is to understand the views of adolescents, their parents, teachers and school principals on the present food and nutrition curriculum and the role of the schools in developing food skills. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews were held with 15 students aged 14-15 years, 15 parents, 12 teachers and ten principals in ten private schools in Kolkata, India. The interview questions were primarily based on the content, merits and demerits of the curriculum. The digitally recorded data were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Findings All the 52 interviewees observed that the food and nutrition curriculum created awareness in students about the importance of healthy eating. However, they also described certain weaknesses of the curriculum. These included lack of practical assignments, an out-dated and a limited curriculum, which failed to initiate critical thinking and was contradicted by sales practices in the school food environment. The interviewees prioritised the inclusion of food skills in the curriculum. Practical implications The emerging evidence suggests the need for the development of a skills-focussed food and nutrition curriculum to encourage healthy eating behaviours among adolescents. Originality/value Most of the work on food and nutrition education has come from developed nations – this is the first study in the Indian context of the secondary school food and nutrition curriculum.

In an attempt to enhance teacher and student performance in school, a learning management system (LMS) known as Knowledge-Net (K-Net) was introduced in Qatari independent schools. (All public schools in Qatar have transformed to independent schools; the independent schools model is similar to the charter school system in North America.) An LMS is a tool that organizes and regulates classroom administrative tasks, supports teachers and students in the teaching and learning process, and informs parents of their children’s progress and school activities. Despite the benefits of the LMS, research studies indicate that its use by students has been limited because of a number of manipulative and non-manipulative factors that can influence behavior. This study explores the factors that impact student use of the LMS K-Net in Qatari independent schools. Quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire that was administered to students in 37 schools. A total of 1,376 students responded to the questionnaire. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect qualitative data that helped to confirm the results of the quantitative data and to provide additional insight on students’ perspectives regarding the use of the LMS. The results point to a strong relation between ICT knowledge and LMS usage. They suggest that the more ICT knowledge students have, the less prone they are to using the LMS. Attitudinal barriers were not predictive of usage. Student usage was strongly correlated to teacher and parent usage. This study is informative in evaluating LMS usage in Qatari schools. <br /><br />

The closing of schools due to Covid-19 has brought a dimension of uncertainty into STEM education. Despite the closing of schools due to the need to observe physical distancing, some schools have found ways to continue teaching and learning on virtual platforms enabled by increasingly pervasive fourth industrial revolution environments. In this study, the teaching of Ordinary level mathematics and science in pursuit of STEM education goals as enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT) in online classrooms was therefore, explored. Using an interpretive case study, relevant data were collected from two mathematics and three science teachers during semi-structured interviews. These participants communicated their experiences in transitioning from face-to-face to online classrooms as they worked to promote STEM education during the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings reveal teachers’ experiences of this transition and their selection of particular Web 2.0 tools to establish online classrooms. Notably, mobile instant messaging tools proved to be a popular option for being cheap, user-friendly, temporal, and multimodal. The findings also revealed that teachers struggled to adapt the hands-on activities to suit online teaching resulting in the use of teacher-centred approaches. Amidst debates on decoloniality in higher education and instructional strategies earmarked for the 21st century in science classrooms, this paper argues for the preparation of teachers who have the epistemic capability to be functional in all school contexts. The study adopts a decoloniality approach and Sen’s Capability Approach to explore the link between pre-service science teacher preparation and the practice of inquiry-based practical work (IBPW) in multiple-deprived classrooms. Inquiry-based learning is an impetus of current reforms and curriculum projects in science education. Practical work is also central to science teaching and learning. The integration of inquiry-based learning and practical work results in IBPW instructional strategies. The implementation of the strategies is filtered through school contextual settings such as material resources and teacher professional identities, which are some of the unmet needs in multiple-deprived classrooms. What is subject to debate in this paper is how teacher training programmes prepare pre-service science teachers to effectively implement IBPW under the adverse conditions of multiple-deprived classrooms. Using one university in the Free State province of South Africa as a case study, data were generated by means of two focus group interviews, each with five final-year pre-service teachers, and semi-structured interviews with two lecturers. Theorising on a decoloniality approach for pre-service teacher preparation in IBPW implementation, the study highlights some epistemic and pedagogical issues that create multiple-deprived classrooms and perpetuate non-inclusivity and injustices.

The current study investigates the beliefs held by science teachers on constructivism and a traditional approach in Qatar government primary schools. More specifically, it aims to investigate the challenges that science teachers experience during inquiry-based learning implementation. A web-based survey was conducted in order to collect data from grades 4 to 6 science teachers. A total of 112 science teachers responded and completed the survey on a voluntary basis. The results indicate that science teachers hold a higher beliefs in constructivism than traditional approach. A T-test and ANOVA analysis have showed that there is no significant differences between the beliefs of science teachers’ and their gender, level of education, and years of teaching experience. In addition, science teachers faced challenges in lesson planning, assessment, and teacher support.

The goal of this work is to describe pre- and in-service science teacher education and science education research in Indonesia in an effort to better inform the global science education community about historical developments and present challenges. We begin by providing an historical overview of the general education system to provide readers with context needed to understand current reform initiatives. Next we describe the current-day process for preparing and certifying science teachers and we describe some of the challenges facing teachers, students, and researchers in Indonesia’s science education context today. We follow this discussion with an introduction to some existing professional organizations for teachers and researchers in Indonesia that are working to develop important channels for disseminating current research on teacher practice, curriculum innovation, and student learning that have the potential to positively influence on teaching and learning in the future. We conclude by highlighting some areas that would benefit from additional research and by inviting more international collaborative research initiatives with colleagues in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

The paper examined different areas of management in relation to Nomadic Education programme and looked into policy statement which is enshrined in the National Policy on Education and definition regarding to management. System theory was also used in order to examine issues o f effective management in schools. Administrators roles in schools was discussed such as mutual respect, shared ideas and the process in establishing nomadic schools with a lot of considerations before erecting the structure. School plant planning was discussed in respect of managers/head teachers in managing the schools toward the achieving educational goals. The paper also examined the component that helps in achieving the goals which are management structure, the hierarchical model to the management o f nomadic schools and how it will really help in managing the school activities. Lastly the paper made some recommendations, such as, government should provide the needed teaching and learning materials for successful attaining goals etc.

Abstract Background Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) is commonly reported and described as disabling by patients recovering from stroke. However, a major challenge is how to accurately diagnose and assess PSF. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore PSF as it is experienced by stroke survivors and described by health professionals to guide future development of a PSF-specific PROM. Methods Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with stroke survivors experiencing PSF (n = 9) and three focus groups were conducted with health professionals (n = 16). Data were analyzed through inductive content analysis. Results The analysis revealed four themes illustrating the experience and descriptions of PSF: 1) PSF characteristics, 2) interfering and aggravating factors, 3) management, and 4) PSF awareness, which refers to stroke survivors first becoming aware of PSF after their initial hospital admission. Conclusion This study highlights the complexity and multidimensionality of PSF. The results from this study will guide future development of a PSF-PROM and support its content validity.

Background:The care process is often a complex and intimate process experienced by patients. Osteoarthritis (OA) care is usually characterised by multimodal interventions that consider the broader array of symptoms and functional limitations and often require a high level of patients’ compliance. Despite efforts to improve the quality of care of patients suffering from OA, and the publication of state-of-the-art clinical practice guidelines [1], the quality of the care process, as experienced by patients, seems to be suboptimal [2]. Hence, it is essential to investigate how patients experience this process to highlight potential elements that can enhance or spoil it to optimise the care quality.Objectives:To explore the patients’ experience of the received OA care process.Methods:Qualitative study, 10 semi-structured interviews were performed. The interview guide was created by a pool of healthcare professionals (physiotherapists, psychologists, nurses) and expert patients. It investigated the emotional experience, beliefs, expectations, perceived barriers and facilitators towards conservative treatments perceived by patients suffering from OA. The interviews lasted approximately one hour, were transcribed verbatim and analysed independently by two authors, who labelled their core parts to find categories and subcategories. A theme-based analysis was performed following an ecological paradigm, naturalistic epistemology, philosophy of phenomenological research.Results:Our analysis revealed 7 main categories with several subcategories (Fig. 1). 1) Uncertainty as some patients perceived treatment choice not to be based on medical evidence “there is an almost religious way of thinking on how to deal with the pathology. It is not an exact science when you choose the physicians you choose the treatment”. 2) Relationship with the self and the others as some patients did not feel understood or even shameful and hopeless about their condition. 3) Patients’ and Health Professionals’ beliefs about the pathology management where common thoughts were the perceived (ab)use of passive therapies, the movement as something dangerous and that OA is “something that you try to resist to, but (surgery) is your destiny”. 4) facilitators and 5) barriers of the adherence to therapeutic exercise that revolve around the cost of the therapy, the time needed and the willingness to change life habits. 6) Patients’ attitudes towards pathology in which the oldest patients perceive OA as “something I have to accept since I am getting old” and the youngest as “Something I have to fight”. 7) Relationship with food in which diet is seen as something that “you force yourself to follow” which is useful only to lose weight and not to preserve a high health status and where overeating is used “to eat your feelings”.Figure 1.Categories and Subcategories stemmed from the analysis of the patients’ interviewsConclusion:Patients suffering from hip and knee OA seem to experience an uncertain care process. The lack of clear explanations and the attitude towards conservative treatment, which is considered as “a pastime while waiting for surgery,” fosters the importance of providing patients with adequate information about the treatment, to shift their beliefs and improve their awareness.
