This study examined the threat pose by schools operating a joint section under UBE to academic activities of both the pupils and students. The research method adopted for this study is the qualitative descriptive design of survey type. Upper basic school I, II, and III students of 15 purposively selected schools operating joint section Universal Basic Education System in Ilorin metropolis were selected for the study. Researchers-designed structured interviews with content validity and 0.77 reliability index of the instrument was the only instrument used to elicit the needed data from the respondents. The findings of the study revealed that: upper basic school students were seriously distracted the students it is meant to cater for in many ways. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that; the same time should be allocated to both sections for both school activities since they use the same compound to decrease distraction and confusion of the students or better still, sections should be structured in different locations to reduce overpopulation in the compound thereby making teaching and learning more effective.

Even after undertaking years of formal education to acquire the language in schools, having a poor command of English remains a problem faced by most Malaysians, especially students in rural schools of Sarawak. Based on the error-analysis carried out by recent research, subject–verb agreement (SVA) is one of the most frequent errors committed by students. To overcome this problem, teachers should significantly improve students’ mastery of SVA in the English language through effective teaching methods. Therefore, this research was conducted to explore the effects of Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures in teaching SVA among rural Sarawak learners. In this study, 35 Form 4 students were selected from a secondary school in the Belaga District, Sarawak as the research participants. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection tools. Overall, findings demonstrated that students showed positive feedback after the intervention was implemented. Results of this research will hopefully provide insights to secondary school students, teachers and the community in the cooperative teaching and learning of grammar.

The beauty and usefulness of a literary piece lie basically on the author’s diction. The expression, ‘literary art’ stems from the fact that literary artists are able to create interesting works of art by proper manipulation of language(s) that among other things entertain and educate their reading audience. For young minds, literature is not only didactic; it also boosts their language acquisition. In recognition of the crucial roles played by literature, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board recommended an appreciable number of textbooks for the study of literature in English. These books run from 2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2012-2013 academic sessions. The thrust of this study is to ascertain the grammatical level of the language of some of these texts, particularly the genres of prose and drama. Error analyses of three texts namely: Decree of the gods, Wishful Bliss and That’s My Girl randomly selected from basic 7-9 were carried out. Concord incongruity, omission/superfluous use of articles and misuse/omission of pronouns were specifically sought for. A simple survey design was adopted for the study and the errors were collated, analyzed and classified based on their types-syntactic, morphological, and concord errors. The study reveals that the texts are replete with concord errors, misuse of articles, omission and improper application of prepositions in structures. The implication of the findings in the teaching and learning of English is discussed and suggestions for improvement made.Key words: Literary art(ist), Language acquisition, Grammatical level, Error analysis, Concord incongruity, Articles and Pronouns

The contents of Mathematics and Physics have always reflected individually, low levels of learning, often with below average results, especially in high school. This influences the choice of graduating high school students for courses for the Exact Sciences in Higher Education. Although part of the same area, the application of knowledge from Mathematics to Physics teaching, still poses a problem for students and teachers. Thus, research and develop new tools to improve student learning and to make lessons more attractive these disciplines is a challenge. This study proposes the use of the computer program Maxima by having a visual demonstration of the theories involving the contents of Mathematics and Physics in the 1st grade of high school, providing thus improve utilization rates through an interdisciplinary mode. The use of the program in this study tends to make the lessons more attractive Mathematics and Physics, and classrooms become real laboratories where, in an interdisciplinary way, teachers and students can see the materialization of the theory involving the two disciplines as a effective tool in improving the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Physics.

21st century skills are embedded in the Malaysian school curriculum to prepare and produce knowledgeable and responsible young citizens in coping with the challenges of the global knowledge economy. The trend has an impact on the roles of school resource centers (SRC), which are currently managed by the so-called library and media teachers (LMT). As the LMTs are appointed among school teachers who need to allocate and divide their responsibilities into academic teaching and SRC management, several issues are found from literature pertaining to their overburdened teaching tasks, lack of time and inadequate library management competencies. This has caused further shortcomings in service provision including poor implementation of information literacy and reading programs for school students. A qualitative research approach is adapted to investigate the roles, functions and competencies of LMTs in managing SRCs and supporting 21st century teaching and learning in the school setting. This study uses semi-structured interviews for data collection involving five (5) LMTs who provided insightful feedback towards understanding the aforementioned issues. The findings reveal essential information with respect to the roles, functions and competencies of LMTs and also identify relevant challenges that can disrupt the provision and delivery of SRC services, facilities and programs. This requires the attention of the government and school administration to enforce a better platform that enables the LMTs to uphold their roles and functions accordingly towards enhancing the 21st teaching and learning environment in Malaysian schools.

A sense of belonging in the cycle of teaching and learning is important to students because if they understand acceptance into the program, they will feel more inspired, more successful, and more driven. Students understand the value of school activities in a supportive and warm atmosphere that provides a sense of belonging and acceptance.  Moreover, it is a vital necessity for every individual. The sense of belonging for schools is about achievement, suggesting that the benefit of fulfilling this need is generally higher, reaching the students. Therefore, students who do not fulfill their needs for possessions will also have lower self-esteem. Low self-esteem is often associated with depression. Low self-esteem can lead to depression, and depression lowers self-esteem. Hence, the paper describes the extent of belongingness and level of self-esteem of high school students of a Catholic college in Antique during the school year 2019-2020. Likewise, this paper explored the relationship between the students' demographics and their sense of belongingness and self-esteem.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é refletir acerca do papel do inglês na educação brasileira contemporânea. O estudo revisa políticas linguísticas e de internacionalização sugerindo que há uma tensão entre o papel formador e o papel instrumental da língua inglesa na educação atual. A fim de subsidiar a reflexão proposta, o estudo analisa dados de dois questionários com perguntas relacionadas ao ensino e à aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras no Brasil. Utilizou-se uma metodologia híbrida analisando dados quantitativos e qualitativos dos questionários respondidos por 65 participantes, sendo 43 estudantes do ensino médio de uma comunidade capixaba de imigrantes pomeranos e 22 professores de inglês. A análise dos questionários sugere que os brasileiros querem aprender inglês como língua estrangeira e veem esse idioma como tendo status de língua internacional. Os resultados mostram que a maior diferença entre o ensino desse idioma no Brasil está nos seus papeis ora formador (na educação básica) ora instrumental (nos cursos livres e programas de internacionalização), confirmando a hipótese levantada na análise das políticas linguísticas de que há uma tensão entre os papeis formador e instrumental do inglês na educação brasileira. Palavras-chave: Formação. Internacionalização. Educação. Papel do inglês.   Abstract This paper aims at reflecting on the role of English in contemporary Brazilian education. The study reviews language and internationalization policies suggesting that there is a tension between the formative role and the instrumental role of English in education today. In order to subsidize the proposed reflection, the study analyzes data from two questionnaires with questions related to teaching and learning foreign languages in Brazil. A hybrid methodology was used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data from the questionnaires answered by 65 participants of whom 43 were high school students from a community with Pomeranian immigrants and 22 were English teachers. The analysis of the questionnaires suggests that Brazilians want to learn English as a foreign language and see that language as having the status of an international language. Results show that the main difference between the teaching of this language in Brazil is related to its formative role (in basic education) and its instrumental role (in private language institutes and international programs), confirming the hypothesis raised in the analysis of language policies that there is a tension between the formative and instrumental roles of English in Brazilian education. Science teachers are the main professionals in schools who address health-related subjects, though food and nutrition education (FNE) projects are mainly planned by health professionals, especially nutritionists. The objective of this study is to create a transdisciplinary approximation between scientific research fields and practical fields from the analysis of an integrated case study conducted in Brazilian schools. In 2011, 10 days of observation were programmed in six schools in five cities. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with different social actors and data was analyzed using the complex thinking theory and the bricolage method of educational research. Planting of vegetable gardens or projects to improve table manners during mealtimes were identified in the schools. The results describe educational approaches used by science teachers to include FNE in school activities, even when not described in the official curriculum. Health professionals can identify actions to support health education in schools starting with that already undertaken by science teachers. The successful initiatives also involved professionals with practical knowledge and experience of life.

This chapter introduces transformative learning as a helpful theory to consider the role of departmental heads in the procurement of teaching and learning resources in selected secondary schools in Alexandra Township, South Africa. South Africa felt the effects of the pandemic as the country was ill-prepared for the devastation the pandemic brought to its learning systems. The Department of Basic Education tried to implement various strategies to ensure that teaching and learning continue to save the academic year. In this qualitative study, the interpretive paradigm and a purposive convenient sampling technique were employed to sample five mathematics DH from five secondary schools. The thematic data analysis was used to interpret and discuss data obtained from the document and semi-structured interviews. It was found that the schools did not have teaching and learning resources that could allow remote learning. Moreover, there is a need to improve retrieval practices as resources loaned to learners remain unaccounted for.

This study aims to determine the level of communication skills of students at SMPN 2 Ponorogo. This research was conducted in October 2019 at SMPN 2 Ponorogo. The method is a qualitative study with a sample of VII H class students in SMPN 2 Ponorogo consisting of 31 students obtained from random sampling. The design of this study used a survey design or the provision of written tests to students and interviews. The data collection technique is carried out by providing a description test to measure students' communication skills and non-structured interviews to students and teachers. Analysis of the data in this study was using qualitative descriptive and quantitative descriptive techniques. The results showed that the level of communication skills of VII grade students of SMPN 2 Ponorogo was still relatively low. The average value obtained is generally 56.9. So, the communication skills of students at SMPN 2 Ponorogo still need to be improved. Some efforts to train students in improving their communication skills are by conducting teaching and learning processes with learning models that are oriented towards students, conducting learning with active discussion, accustoming students to read, providing interesting learning facilities and media, and conducting learning activities with experiment or student worksheets.

Context: With the growing denunciations of violence and injustices in the social relationship, inside and outside schools, education based on human rights is insurgent in the current system of teaching and learning. Using the concept of school as a process of scientific, social and political construction, we planned the teaching and learning process of chemical interactions using the art of graffiti as a playful activity. Objectives: Reflection on chemistry teaching beyond the concepts of natural sciences, but also towards social issues to promote an education that transfigures the traditional model established by the hegemonic power during Brazilian history. Design: We use an ethnographic case study as a method. Scenario and Participants: In this way, we chose to bring graffiti art to chemistry workshops, since the paints are fixed on urban walls through chemical interactions between substances, building images and/or protest phrases that make us rethink the injustices and inequalities existing in Brazilian society and to dialogue the emergence of this art in the black movement with the political aspects of Human Rights. Thirteen students enrolled in a state basic education high school in the city of Goiânia-GO, Brazil, joined the workshops on Human Rights, Graffiti and Chemistry. Eight graffiti artists also participated in the workshop for free. Data collection and analysis: We used transcripts of semi-structured interviews and video-recorded workshops to categorise the data, analysing them with the Descending Hierarchical Classification technique and the use of dendrograms performed by the Iramuteq Software. Results: We obtained categories that evidence the chemical understanding of the content of chemical interactions and the socio-political understanding of human rights, and seven drawings on graffiti murals that show this correlation. Conclusions: The transgression of morals and the empowerment of the subordinate promote playfulness in the individual or collective social visibility of individuals, enabling better assimilation of scientific and social content.
