Objective: to analyze narratives about the experience of hope of families in the context of pediatric chronic illness. Method: a narrative research using Family Systems Nursing as a conceptual framework. Three families of children and adolescents diagnosed with complex chronic illness participated in this study, totaling 10 participants. Data collection was developed using family photo-elicitation interviews. Family narratives were constructed and analyzed according to inductive thematic analysis with theoretical data triangulation. Results: the analytical theme - Waves of Family Hope in the Context of Pediatric Chronic Illness - is composed of four different types of hope: uncertain hope, caring hope, latent hope, and expectant hope. Movement through these hopes generates a driving energy and depends on a number of factors: support, information, searching for normality, and thoughts and comparisons. Conclusion: the results highlight the interaction and reciprocities of the members of the family unit, and the dynamics of hope, and illustrate the different types of hope and the factors that influence them. This study highlights the experience of hope as a family resource rather than just an individual resource, and supports health professionals in the planning of family care considering hope as an essential and dynamic family resource.

Background: In recent years, the Design of Experiments (DOE) is used for removing pollutant from wastewater by nano-adsorbent. Some methods are Taguchi, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and factorial design. The aim of this paper is to review different used methods of DOE in removing pollutant to suggest some notations to scholars. Methods: The reviewed papers were searched in Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science randomly and categorized based on DOE methods. Results: Number of factors and responses in DOE for removing pollutants from wastewater are between 2-6 and 1-4, respectively. There are several computer software programs that provide simple use of these methods, such as Qualitek, Design Expert, Minitab, R and Matlab Programming. All models have a coefficient of determination R-sq more than 0.9. Conclusion: All the mentioned methods are appropriate because of the high R-sq value. Since the largest number of runs are used in RSM, it is not suitable for the experiments which are conducted by expensive materials and process. Furthermore, Design Expert and Minitab are the most popular software used by scholars in DOE methods for the removal of pollutant.

The world is facing the challenge of aging populations. Urban natural environments, including green spaces and blue spaces, have been demonstrated to have great benefits to the mental restoration of the elderly. However, the study of the specific characteristics of urban environments that are popular and the most restorative for the elderly is still lacking. Photo elicitation as visual stimuli was utilized to explore the differences in preference and psychological restoration of the elderly through the perception of the eight perceived sensory dimensions (PSDs) in different types of urban environments. The results showed that: (1) The respondents had different perceptions of the eight PSDs in the different urban natural environments. Blue space and partly-closed green space were more preferred by the elderly, and also had more psychological restorative effects on the elderly. (2) There was no significant correlation between the number of highly perceived PSDs and preference, as well as between the number of highly perceived PSDs and psychological restoration. However, there was a significant correlation between preference and psychological restoration. (3) Partly-closed green space with more Serene and Refuge qualities, and blue space with more Serene, Refuge and Prospect properties were optimal characteristics for psychological restoration of the elderly. In addition, open green space with more Prospect, Serene and Social qualities, and closed green space with more Space, Refuge and less Nature properties could also increase psychological restoration of older adults. These findings can provide useful guidelines for restorative environmental design for the elderly in the future.

Abstract Advances in diagnostic procedures have helped to make diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias more accurate and to occur earlier in the disease progression. For persons living with dementia and their family care partners, finding programs that meet their needs for support post diagnosis can be challenging. Likewise, for persons with chronic conditions, few programs exist which help care dyads to create a manageable plan of care that addresses each person’s concerns and fears. SHARE, (Support, Health, Activities, Resources, and Education), originally designed for dementia care partners, has shown positive outcomes for both members of the care partnership. This presentation describes the development of the six-session SHARE intervention, its implementation in community settings, and its current standing as an evidence-based program and product that has been commercialized. Discussion will also focus on adapting SHARE for use with chronic illness families, highlighting revisions to program procedures, materials, recruitment, and evaluation.

Children's concepts about illness causality and bodily functioning change in a predictable way with advancing age. Differences in the understanding of these concepts in healthy children vs children with a chronic illness have not been clearly delineated. This study included 49 children with a seizure disorder, 47 children with an orthopaedic condition, and 96 healthy children, all with normal intelligence and ranging in age from 5 to 16 years. It demonstrates systematic differences in children's general reasoning skills and in their understanding of concepts about illness causality and bodily functioning, as a function of their age and experience of illness. At all ages, children who had a condition with orthopaedic involvement reported less sophisticated general reasoning and concepts about illness than did healthy children; children with a seizure disorder reported similar general reasoning skills to those of healthy children, but considerably less sophisticated concepts about illness. children's concepts about body functioning did not differ as a function of the presence of a chronic illness. When their different levels of general cognitive reasoning were statistically controlled, children with a chronic illness had somewhat more sophisticated concepts about bodily functioning than did healthy children. Differences in conceptual development among children with different types of illnesses lead to interesting speculations with regard to the effects of particular illness characteristics on children's cognitive development.

The present study was designed to examine the monitoring performance of operators in a complex environment requiring concurrent monitoring of multiple displays with different types of critical signals. Participants performed a manual flight task concurrently with three monitoring tasks over three separate 2-hour sessions. The monitoring tasks required operators to detect deviations in the gauge, mode, and digital readout portions of a simulated EICAS display. Results indicated that while performance on the primary flight task degraded within each session, monitoring performance remained constant. Further, intrasession monitoring performance did not degrade across trials. These findings suggest that vigilance performance for complex displays may be influenced by a number of factors including compensatory strategies related to mental effort regulation, the complexity of monitoring task demands, the duration of the monitoring session, and the nature of additional operator responsibilities.
