ABSTRACT This study presents an analysis of the abrasive effects of sediments from the bed of the Acre River, Brazil, on the wear of three different ferrous materials employed in the manufacture of impellers of centrifuge pumps used to catch raw water. In order to evaluate the abrasive wear and specific wear coefficient (k) as a function of sediment concentration, tests were conducted in samples of SAE 8620 steel, nodular cast iron and gray cast iron by using a rotary-ball abrasion meter. These tests employed abrasive slurry with concentration of 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 g L-1 of sediments in distilled water. The volume of worn material as a function of the relative velocity of water flow in relation to the impeller blades was mathematically estimated. The experimental results showed that: i) The semi-angular and semi-rounded shapes of the sediments from the Acre River produced evidence of micro-grooving and plastic deformation in the three metallic alloys; ii) SAE 8620 steel showed higher resistance to abrasive wear than samples of gray and nodular cast iron; iii) the increase in the volume of worn material due to increment in sediment concentration and the relative velocity of the mixture (water + sediment) to the rotor pads.

Nodular cast irons are an excellent alternative in manufacturing process of axels due to their characteristics and good mechanical properties. However, the necessity of joining the axels to the gears and other components, made in carbon steel, is a great challenge. Traditional fusion welding methods applied to dissimilar ferrous materials are not deeply studied. In this context, it is well known that different materials have distinct melting points which can cause difficulty in welding, besides of defects formation from solidification. Therefore, modern joining processes such as Friction Hydro Pillar Processing (FHPP) are a great alternative. In this technology, a consumable rod is rotated against to a base material, generating the heat due to the friction, promoting materials in the plastic state and then producing the weld. Hence, this work presents a preliminary study of FHPP between the FE55006 nodular cast iron and SAE 8620 steel and evaluates the rod geometry influence on microstructure and surface stresses of the welded joints. Two rod geometries were used and two welds were further produced. The results indicated that an increase in the rod contact area promoted a lower surface stress as well as a better welded joint.

Waste water is an aggressive environment for transport pumps to treatment plants. The pumps used are generally, immersion pumps and are made of various elements like, rotor, stator, housing, screws, flanges, springs, seals, etc. The construction elements of the pumps are made of various metallic materials, such as nodular cast iron, gray cast iron, low alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, bronze, brass, copper, etc. When immersed in waste water, the metals form galvanic series. The paper presents the galvanic corrosion analysis of the above-mentioned metals in case the corrosive environment is waste water with various compositions.

In this study, usability of boron as an alloy element in gray cast iron and its effect to abrasive wear behaviour were investigated. Pin-on-drum wear tests at the room temperature carried out for seven low nickels alloyed gray cast irons with different boron addition. The mass losses, hardness values and microstructures for gray cast iron specimens with different boron alloyed were investigated for determining wear behaviour. The pin for the wear tests was manufactured from X210Cr12 cold work tool steel with material number of 1.2080. Abrasive pin-on-drum wear tests were carried out at a 165 N constant load and two different sliding speeds that are closely related to the appropriate operating conditions in rolling mills. The experimental studies have shown that wear rate decrease with increasing boron amount in chemical composition of the alloy and the wear rate at high sliding speed has decreased more rapidly than the rate at the low sliding speed with increasing boron amount.

The objective of this article consists in exhaustive monitoring of abrasive wear and subsequent evaluation of nodular cast iron with spheroidal graphite used as the base material for production of ploughshare blades. Nodular cast iron has a lot of convenient properties for production of these components. We have tested this material in field tests. For these tests there were manufactured ploughshare blades (directly according to original). These ploughshare blades were tested in practical conditions of agricultural company Farma Nedvězí Ltd. Three ploughshare blades were used in natural cast state and the others were heat-treated. During the test there were measured decreases of weights of the ploughshare blades and subsequently compared with decreases of original ploughshare blades, produced by company Opall Agri which are ordinarily available at our market.

The paper presents the cavitation stand used, the work methodology, the trials realized on specimens of gray cast irons, with flake graphite and spheroidal-graphite, which were tested for cavitation erosion during different periods of time of the cavitation attack. Finally, the conclusions were interpreted on the basis of comparative graphics realized at the macro and microstructures level obtained for these two types of cast iron. Of the two types of gray cast iron, the nodular cast iron presents a better cavitation erosion resistance.
