It is reported a case of an eight-year-old Yorkshire Terrier dog, with a history of prolonged use of prednisone in a dosage of 1mg/kg of body weight each 24 hours during two years. The helical computed tomography revealed hepatomegaly associated to a hyperattenuation of the parenchyma, with a radiodensity value of 82.55 Hounsfield units (HU). The spleen presented a mean radiodensity of 57.17HU, and a radiodensity difference of 25.38HU was observed between the two organs. Based on the history and findings of imaging technique, it was determined the presumptive diagnosis of steroidal hepatopathy compatible with accumulation of hepatic glycogen. It was concluded that computed tomography enabled the characterization of hepatic injury and the presumed diagnosis of steroidal hepatopathy

Objective.To investigate the prevalence of nephrolithiasis in gouty patients by computed tomography (CT) imaging and to compare it with the “prevalence” of urolithiasis calculated from histories of urinary tract calculus.Methods.The kidneys of 383 male patients with primary gout were examined using an unenhanced 2-row helical CT detector, imaging at 2 mm collimation and a helical pitch of 3. The urolithiasis history of the 383 patients was investigated by inquiry. Patients’ ages, body mass index, and laboratory data from a 1-hour clearance test were determined.Results.CT scans confirmed nephrolithiasis in 103 (26.9%, 95% confidence interval 22.5%–31.6%) of the 383 gouty patients, and history of urinary calculus was positive in 65 (17.0%, 95% confidence interval 13.4%–21.1%) of the 383. However, 64 (62%) of the 103 stone-formers identified by CT had no history of urolithiasis. There was a significant difference between the ages of the 103 stone-formers identified by CT and the 65 stone-formers identified from the history.Conclusion.The prevalence of nephrolithiasis obtained using CT was 26.9% in the 383 patients with primary gout. Our results imply that we cannot determine an accurate prevalence of urolithiasis from a patient’s history. Most of the “prevalence” reported in the past may not correspond to a statistically justifiable one, but instead to the “cumulative incidence” during the contraction period of gout. Thus, the prevalence of nephrolithiasis confirmed by a cross-sectional method and the “prevalence” of urolithiasis calculated from patients’ calculus histories should be clearly distinguished.

AbstractThree-dimensional images of the incudostapedial joint (I-S joint) were reconstructed using helical computed tomography (CT). The images of the joint were most often reconstructed when threshold values were selected at −500 to −700 Hounsfield Units. These shapes were changed by choosing various threshold values. Histological examinations of the cadaver specimen indicate that these changes are due to structure of the I-S joints. We conclude that these 3-D images may be useful in assessing pathology of the I-S joint.

Congenital cardiopathies in adults are a rare clinical entity in the cardiology consultations. Advances in imaging techniques allow the fortuitous diagnosis of mild forms of these congenital abnormalities. We describe a case of an asymptomatic 41-year-old man, with a medical history of recurrent pneumonia during childhood and an established diagnosis of scimitar syndrome by computed tomography.

Seymouria is the best known of the seymouriamorphs, a group of Permo-Carboniferous reptiliomorphs with both terrestrial and aquatic taxa. The majority of research on Seymouria has focused on cranial anatomy, with few detailed descriptions or illustrations of the postcrania. We utilized neutron computed tomography (nCT) and histological sampling to provide updated, detailed figures that clarify details of the postcranial anatomy and to assess the development and histology of Seymouria through specimens from the early Permian Richards Spur locality. The correlation of morphological and histological data indicate rapid metamorphosis in this terrestrially capable stem amniote, with the youngest specimen being postmetamorphic despite being distinctly younger than premetamorphic individuals of Discosauriscus, the only other seymouriamorph to have been histologically sampled. The microanatomical data (e.g., semi-open medullary cavity) also substantiate the hypothesis that Seymouria was terrestrial based on interpretation of external features, although the persistence of a modestly developed medullary spongiosa in comparison to either Discosauriscus or to other co-occurring terrestrial tetrapods suggests additional nuances that require further exploration. In the absence of clearly recognizable postmetamorphic stages in several seymouriamorph taxa, it is difficult to determine the evolutionary trajectory of terrestriality within the clade. Our analysis provides the first histological characterization of the life history of Seymouria and highlights the need for further study of seymouriamorph ontogeny.

Due to the great number of structures in the maxillofacial region, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an important procedure in presurgical planning for removal of impacted teeth. Most of the information provided by this imaging technique cannot be visualized in conventional radiographs. In addition, CBCT reduces patient exposure to radiation in comparison with helical computed tomography and provides dental practitioners with easy access. We report the clinical case of a patient who underwent a surgical procedure for removal of an impacted maxillary premolar. CBCT-assisted presurgical treatment was used, enabling a more conservative surgical access, a less traumatic and less time consuming procedure than conventional surgical intervention.

Abstract An unstable plaque has a high risk of thrombosis and at the same time for a fast progression of the stenosis degree. Also, “high-risk plaque” and “thrombosis-prone plaque” are used as synonym terms for characterization of a vulnerable plaque. The imaging biomarkers for vulnerable coronary plaques are considered to be spotty calcifications, active remodeling, low-density atheroma and the presence of a ring-like attenuation pattern, also known as the napkin-ring sign. Computed cardiac tomography can determine the plaque composition by assessing the plaque density, which is measured in Hounsfield units (HU). The aim of this manuscript was to provide an update about the most frequently used biomarkers of vulnerability in a vulnerable plaque with the help of computed cardiac tomography.
