Abstract: Prior studies indicate that many Japanese college students remain at the beginner level even after studying English for six years. Also, their self-efficacy is low, which hinders their improvement. Generally, grammar classes are taught in a traditional way, that is, one-way teacher centered, and students are supposed to copy what is written on a blackboard while listening to teachers’ instruction and memorizing grammar rules. In such grammar classes, false beginners have had little successful experience. Traditional teaching methods are intended to provide remedial education in many colleges but might result in poor outcomes and even be counterproductive. According to Bandura (1977), self-efficacy drives actions that are necessary to achieve desired results, and he classified the concepts of self-efficacy into the following four categories: (1) performance accomplishment, (2) vicarious learning, (3) verbal encouragement, and (4) emotional state. For improving false beginners’ English skills, self-efficacy matters. So, for college students still at the beginner level, what would be the ideal method of learning English grammar? How should teachers help them? What if collaborative learning is introduced? In collaborative learning, two or more people learn together. In contrast to individual learners, collaborative learners gain advantages from one another’s resources and skills (e.g., asking one another for information, evaluating one another's ideas, monitoring one another’s work). Under such a circumstance, learners can make it easier to accomplish tasks by encouraging each other. They see a successful peer as a future ideal self, and then they can sense possibilities for themselves, i.e., self-efficacy. In fact, beginners’ low meta-cognitive skills (Sakai, 2011) prevent them from improving their English skills. However, because collaborative learning might be a solution effective than individual learning in achieving critical thinking (Oxford, 1997). More so than in other subjects, collaborative learning is actively conducted in English classes, e.g., conversation practice in pairs, peer feedback on writings, presentations, and group discussions, but there are few pedagogical reports on collaborative learning from grammar classes. In this small poster presentation for the 16th Education and Development Conference, (1) the effectiveness of collaborative activities in Japan for learning grammar will be overviewed, and (2) other options that could improve false beginners’ self-efficacy in learning English grammar are discussed to provide directions for further research. Keywords: Collaborative/Cooperative Learning, False-beginner, grammar, self-efficacy, meta-cognitive skills

This research is to examine the students‘motivational factors and attitude towards the learning ofEnglish grammar in a Computer-supported LearningSystem. Twenty-nine students were taught with astudent-centered approach and three grammar learningweb sites were used frequently for classroom andindividual English grammar practice, whereas anothertwenty-nine were taught with the traditional teachercenteredapproach. Both groups were given grammarcorrection and explanation tests before and after thestudy. After comparing the results of the pre-test andpost-test with those of the control group, it was foundthat the experimental group excelled over the controlgroup in both grammar correction and grammarexplanation. It proved that students‘ implicit andexplicit knowledge on English grammar was greatlyimproved by the computer-supported teaching methodsand environment. Further interviews with the studentsalso revealed that the new pedagogical practice hadprovided many positive motivational factors insupporting students‘ learning process. Keywords: motivation, grammar, computer-supportedclassroom.

This research aims to create a supporting media product in English Grammar learning in semester 2 students majoring in English at IAIN Palopo. based on observations in June 2019, the author found a problem in the scale of student use in smartphone use that is increasingly growing. Therefore, the author is interested in creating an online comic that can be accessed on the phone by using an application called Webtoon. The study design used in this study was Research and Development (R&D) utilized ADDIE Model. It consists of Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. The product is used as a supporting medium in English grammar learning which was once being studied by Semester 2 English Student IAIN Palopo. The product was tried out to the Students of Semester 2 of English Students at IAIN Palopo. The instruments were used in this study are Questionnaire for need analysis and observation sheet for 5 Experts and student’s perception. In this study, 5 experts were involved in order to validate the product. The elements of the validation are Display, Content/Materials, Language, and the Application. The result based from the expert’s validation as well as try-out product result, the product of this study was appropriate to be applied for the students of English Department semester 2, as a supporting media in Learning English Grammar

The aim of this research is to find out the effectiveness of a modular approach in teaching and learning to assess students’ performance, achievement and motivation and to decide if a modular approach is more effective than traditional methods while performing an experiment with two groups of students learning English at a technical university. The researchers consider a modular specification to be a technology in which the content is divided into a number of units or modules, each of which is examined separately. A module is considered to be a set of learning opportunities organized around a well-defined topic which contains elements of instruction, specific objectives, learning activities and self-assessment and evaluation using criteria-referenced measurement. This project combines quantitative and qualitative research methods to address the impact of modular teaching, learning and assessment on engineering students. The authors use a unique modular system and their own book on English Grammar. This experiment shows that students of modular syllabuses find it useful and motivating and say that it encourages them to do better on the next modules. At the same time, modular learning and assessment does not remove the stress and workload of traditional approaches. Teachers in the modular system appreciate the better planning opportunity around the exams and the clarity of the focus of their teaching requirements. Still, the approach and the structure of modules used in the experiment requires improvement and development.
