Fatty acids and their potassium soaps were screened for their toxicity to different life stages and eggs of the balsam woolly aphid (Adelgespiceae (Ratz.)). The most effective fatty acids for causing aphid mortality were in two major groups, one centering around capric acid (C10) within the low-chain saturated fatty acid series and the other around oleic acid (C18:1), within the unsaturated 18-carbon fatty acids. The potassium soaps were better aphicides than the corresponding acids; the soaps of caprylic, capric, oleic, and linoleic acids were the most effective. Eggs were less sensitive to the soaps than later stages of the aphid, and there was a large variation in their response to the soap treatments. The possibility of using fatty acids and soaps as a control for the balsam woolly aphid is discussed.

Citrus aurantium and C. limon were selected in the search for natural plant insecticides. The essential oils of C. aurantium and C. limon and ethanol extracts of the seeds, pulp, albedo, and peel of C. aurantium were incorporated into the larval diet of the lepidopteran pest Spodoptera frugiperda. Larval and pupal mortality were quantified and adult malformation was observed. C aurantium essential oil had antifeedant action and the mixture of albedo ethanol extract and C aurantium essential oil had toxic effects on S. frugiperda larvae at early stages, when they had not yet produced major damage to the crop. Our results indicated that a mixture of ethanol extract of albedo and C. aurantium essential oil (250 μg of extract mix per g of diet) deterred feeding by 46% and had the highest larval mortality (100%) of the materials tested. The peel extract (250 μg per g of diet) produced an increment in growth rate and diet consumption. However, 40% of the larval and 45% of the pupal populations died after 96 h of treatment. The blend of essential oil and C. aurantium albedo ethanol extract showed the lowest consumption and a poor nutrient conversion into biomass. Finally, the presence of D-limonene and nootkatone in the peel ethanol extract, and C. limon and C. aurantium essential oils, may be the cause of the response in the feeding behavior and toxic effects found on S. frugiperda.

Fusarium head blight caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Radicis-lycopersici (FORL) is a constraint to tomato cultivation in Korhogo, Côte dIvoire. To control this disease, the antifungal activity of essential oils extracted from certain plants was evaluated in comparison with that of a synthetic fungicide for use. In vitro tests were performed on the different life stages of FORL. The in vivo evaluations consisted in carrying out two modes of treatment (curative and preventive) on plants of a susceptible variety of tomato inoculated with FORL. The results showed that the essential oils significantly reduced the different life stages of F.oxysporum f. sp. Radicis-lycopersici (FORL) as did the synthetic product. Thus, the essential oil Cymbopogon citratus at concentrations of 4000 and 6000 ppm strongly inhibited in vitro the different stages of FORL. In preventive and curative treatment, the essential oils not only improved the growth parameters of tomato plants but also reduced the incidence and severity of diseases. Thus, it was found that Cymbopogon citratus (4000 ppm) in preventive treatment, and Banko plus (250 ppm) in curative treatment reduced the mortality rate of FORL up to 6.66% and improved the growth parameters and reduced the flowering time of the tomato plant.The essential oil of C. citratus could be used for biological control of F. oxysporum f. sp. Radicis lycopersici.
