The Toxic Effects of Fatty Acids and Their Salts on the Balsam Woolly Aphid, Adelgespiceae (Ratz.)

Fatty acids and their potassium soaps were screened for their toxicity to different life stages and eggs of the balsam woolly aphid (Adelgespiceae (Ratz.)). The most effective fatty acids for causing aphid mortality were in two major groups, one centering around capric acid (C10) within the low-chain saturated fatty acid series and the other around oleic acid (C18:1), within the unsaturated 18-carbon fatty acids. The potassium soaps were better aphicides than the corresponding acids; the soaps of caprylic, capric, oleic, and linoleic acids were the most effective. Eggs were less sensitive to the soaps than later stages of the aphid, and there was a large variation in their response to the soap treatments. The possibility of using fatty acids and soaps as a control for the balsam woolly aphid is discussed.

The performance characteristics of the engine and the emission levels with Copra Oil (CPO), Virgin Coconut (cocos nucifera) Oil (VCO), Tamanu (calaphyllum inopyllum) Oil (TMO), and Nangae (canarium indicum) Oil (NGO) are presented. The oils, obtained from naturally grown trees in Vanuatu, were tested as straight vegetable oils (SVOs) in a Diesel engine and the results are compared with those of neat diesel. The oils were converted to their fatty-acid-methyl-esters (FAMEs) using gas chromatography to determine their fatty acid compositions. The brake thermal efficiency with SVOs was found to be comparable to diesel. The structure of the alkyl chain and the carbon-to-hydrogen ratio were also studied. All the oils have Palmitic acid, Capric acid, Caprylic acid, and Oleic acid as the major fatty acids. The CPO and VCO have higher amounts of Oleic acid, which acts as an additive and breaks up the interaction between the major fatty acids at higher temperatures, reducing the viscosity. Emissions of CO2 were lower while those of CO, NOx, and SO2 were higher with SVOs compared to diesel. The results indicate that the local SVOs are good and inexpensive substitute fuels for Vanuatu that can help the country meet the UN’s sustainable development goals.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the fatty acids, lipid soluble vitamins, sterols, phenolics, and antioxidant capacities of three endemic Salvia L. taxa (S. euphratica var. Montbret & Aucher ex Bentham leiocalycina (Rech. Fil.) Hedge, S. euphratica var. Montbret & Aucher ex Bentham euphratica (Rech. Fil.) Hedge and S. pseudoeuphratica Rech.Fil.) and to evaluate these results systematically. The fatty acid compositions were determined by using gas chromatography, while the lipid soluble vitamins, sterols, and phenolics were determined by using HPLC. Also, the antioxidant capacities of three Salvia taxa were measured in vitro. Palmitic acid was found as major saturated fatty acid while oleic acid, linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, and erucic acid were found as major unsaturated fatty acids in the present study. It was found that S. euphratica var. euphratica had lower palmitic acid (8.94 ± 0.71%), total saturated fatty acid (19.16 ± 0.15%), and higher unsaturated fatty acid content (82.08 ± 0.52%) than other studied taxa. Furthermore, it was shown that S. euphratica var. euphratica had different 18.3/18:2 (0.36) unsaturated/saturated fatty acid (4.28) ratios. However, this study demonstrated that Salvia taxa had low lipid soluble vitamins, sterol contents. On the other hand, it was shown that Salvia taxa had similar catechin (509.2 ± 4.21 µg/g and 552.2 ± 9.21 µg/g) and vanillic acid amounts (351.2 ± 2.17 µg/g and 396.8 ± 4.1 µg/g) in this study. And also, it was found that Salvia taxa had high rosmarinic acid content while S. euphratica var. leiocalycina had the highest rosmarinic acid content (1480 ± 7.57 µg/g). On the other hand, it was shown that the two ferulic acid contents of S. euphratica varieties were higher (1175 ±/5.21 µgmg-1740.2 ± 4.82 µg/mg) than the ferulic acid content of S. pseudoeuphratica of which was the lowest (19.2 ± 0.97 µg/mg). The present results suggested that the biochemical results guided the morphological studies, and Salvia taxa have a potent antioxidant capacity.

Plasma free fatty acids were determined chemically and by gas chromatography in different anatomical sites. The myocardium removed palmitic and oleic acids and lesser amounts of stearic and linoleic acids. Electrically stimulated skeletal muscle took up oleic acid in greatest quantities. Liver showed consistent removal of stearic, oleic, and linoleic acids and an occasional uptake of other acids. The splanchnic area did not remove or mobilize free fatty acids. The composition of free fatty acids in thoracic duct lymph was similar to that in arterial blood, with the exception of a higher percentage of linoleic and possibly oleic acid. The total and free fatty acid fractions of the inguinal subcutaneous adipose tissue showed a similar distribution of fatty acids. Both were relatively high in oleic and linoleic acids. Free fatty acid released by adipose tissue had a lower oleic and linoleic acid content than that present in the cell.

The efforts to modify the fatty acid composition of milk have intensified with health conscious nutrition coming to the forefront.This experiment of ours was designed to investigate to what extent the natural-based feed additives, such as oilseeds, can influence the fatty acid composition of cow’s milk.Further information was gained about feeding of oilseeds in specific amounts to be fitted into the technology of a large-scale dairy farm in practice. The feed supplements were whole, untreated rapeseed and whole, untreated linseed, as part of a total mixed ration. In case of saturated fatty acids when supplementing with whole rapeseed the most significant change was observable in the concentration of the caprylic acid, capric acid, undecylic acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, stearic acid. In case of unsaturated fatty acids the quantity of oleic acid enhanced considerably. When observating the feeding with whole linseed the concentration of many saturated fatty acids lowered (caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid). The quantity of some unsaturated fatty acids was showing a distinct rise after feeding with linseed, this way the oleic acid, α-linolenic acid, conjugated linoleic acid, eicosadienoic acid. The aim of the study was to produce food which meets the changed demands of customers, as well.

ABSTRACT The susceptibility of Candida albicans to several fatty acids and their 1-monoglycerides was tested with a short inactivation time, and ultrathin sections were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) after treatment with capric acid. The results show that capric acid, a 10-carbon saturated fatty acid, causes the fastest and most effective killing of all three strains of C. albicans tested, leaving the cytoplasm disorganized and shrunken because of a disrupted or disintegrated plasma membrane. Lauric acid, a 12-carbon saturated fatty acid, was the most active at lower concentrations and after a longer incubation time.

Biodiversitas 19: 1737-1742. Indonesia is the second largest producer of capturefisheries products in the world and the most capture fisheries production comes from marine fisheries. Marine fish is a source of protein,amino acid, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, which are important components of diet. The objective of the study was to investigatethe protein and fatty acids profile of nine marine fish samples from Java Sea of Indramayu West Java, Indonesia. The analysis datashowed that the total protein content of fish samples ranged from 61.07% (Pampus argenteus) to 86.56% (Tetraodontidae). Meanwhile,total lipid content of fish samples ranged from 1.73% (Tetraodontidae) to 9.82% (Leiognathus equulus). The concentration of α-AminoNitrogen (AN) of fish protein hydrolysate was ranging from 31 mM (Nemipterus hexodon) to 69 mM (Mystacoleucus padangensis)and% Degree of Hydrolysis (DH) was ranging from 9.33% to 20.39%. The molecular weight of protein fish samples had similar profilesprimarily for almost all samples, which could be observed from a typical band with the weight around 49 kDa. The saturated fatty acid(Ʃ SFA) compositions of fish species ranged from 1094.03-4233.03 μg/g. Oleic acid (MUFA) content of all fish species ranged from257.91-1216.06 μg/g. However, only three fish species contain of Poly Unsaturated Fatty Acid (PUFA) linoleic acid as the following;Selaroides leptolepis (171.36 μg/g), Oxyeleotris marmorata (249.40μg/g) and Tetraodontidae (140.35 μg/g). The highest SFA contentwas found in S. leptolepis with palmitic acid (C16:0) as the dominant saturated fatty acid (2320.88 μg/g). S. leptolepis also containedhigh oleic acid (1216.06 μg/g) and linoleic acid (171.36 μg/g).

<p>Testa is a byproduct of the coconut flour industrial processing process and has not been used optimally. Testa is the outer layer of coconut flesh which is brown. peeled with a thickness of about 2mm, dried, and taken the oil. The purpose of this study was to see the potential that can be processed from coconut testa by identifying the physical and chemical properties of testa oil and to determine the composition of its fatty acid content. The research was carried out in 2019 and carried out at the Manado Industrial Research and Standardization Center Laboratory. The results showed a water content value of 0.2148%; free fatty acids 2.02%; the peroxide number is 0.4107 Mek O2/Kg; iodine number 14.452 g iodine/100g; and the saponin number 258.46 mg KOH/g. The results of testing the fatty acid composition of testa oil using a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) tool were obtained, eight types of fatty acids consisting of medium-chain fatty acids and long-chain fatty acids, with the most dominant percentage being Lauric acid methyl ester (C12 - Lauric acid) of 41.59% which is a group of medium-chain fatty acids. Overall, the fatty acids obtained are Caprylic acid methyl ester (C8 - caprylic acid) 5.43%, Capric acid methyl ester (C10 - capric acid) 4.68%, Lauric acid methyl ester (C12 - lauric acid) 41, 59%, Myristic acid methyl ester (C14 - myristic acid) 18.87%, Palmitic acid methyl ester (C16 - palmitic acid) 11.87%, Linoleic acid methyl ester (C18 - linoleic acid) 1.67%, Oleic acid methyl ester (C18 - oleic acid) 11.88%, Stearic acid methyl ester (C20 - stearic acid) 4.01%. The results obtained show that coconut testa oil has the potential to be developed into functional food, cosmetic and pharmaceuticals products .</p><p align="center"><strong>ABSTRAK</strong></p><p>Testa adalah produk samping dari proses pengolahan industri tepung kelapa, dan belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal. Testa merupakan lapisan luar daging buah kelapa yang berwarna coklat. dikupas dengan ketebalan sekitar 2mm, dikeringkan dan dikeluarkan minyaknya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat potensi yang dapat diolah dari testa kelapa dengan cara mengidentifikasi sifat fisik dan kimia dari minyak testa dan untuk mengetahui komposisi kandungan asam lemaknya. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada tahun 2019 dan dilakukan di Laboratorium Balai Riset dan Standardisasi Industri Manado. Hasil penelitian diperoleh nilai kadar air 0,2148%; asam lemak bebas 2,02%; bilangan peroksida sebesar 0,4107 Mek O<sub>2</sub>/Kg; bilangan iod 14,452 g iod/100g; dan bilangan penyabunan 258,46 mg KOH/g. Hasil pengujian komposisi asam lemak minyak testa menggunakan alat <em>Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry</em> (<em>GCMS</em>) diperoleh, delapan jenis asam lemak penyusun yang terdiri dari asam lemak rantai medium dan asam lemak rantai Panjang, dengan persentase yang paling dominan adalah Lauric acid methyl ester (C12 – Asam laurat) sebesar 41,59% yang merupakan golongan dari asam lemak rantai medium. Secara keseluruhan asam lemak yang diperoleh adalah, Caprylic acid methyl ester (C8 – asam kaprilat) 5,43%, Capric acid methyl ester (C10 – asam kaprat) 4,68%, Lauric acid methyl ester (C12 – asam laurat) 41,59%, Myristic acid methil ester (C14 – asam miristat) 18,87%, Palmitic acid methyl ester (C16 – asam palmitat) 11,87%, Linoleic acid methyl ester (C18 – asam linoleat) 1,67%, Oleic acid methyl ester (C18 – asam oleat) 11,88%, Stearic acid methil ester (C20 – asam stearat) 4,01%. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan minyak testa kelapa memiliki potensi yang dapat dikembangkan menjadi produk pangan fungsional,  kosmetik, maupun farmasi.</p>

In the present paper we have determined the fatty acid content of some edible insects of Mexico. A comparative analysis of the insect species studied in this research showed that caproic acid was present in a minimal proportion which ranged between 0.01 for Periplaneta americana (nymphs) and 0.06 (g/100 g, dry basis) for Euschistus strenuus. The highest proportion of caprilic acid (0.09) was found in Tenebrio molitor (adults). Atta sp. had the highest amount of capric acid (0.26). Polistes sp. was found to be rich in lauric acid (0.77) and for myristic acid it had the highest content (5.64). Dactylopius sp. and E. strenuus were rich in palmitic acid (14.89). Euschistus taxcoensis had the highest quantity of palmitoleic acid (12.06). Llaveia axin exhibited the highest quantity of stearic acid (22.75). Polistes sp. was found to be rich in oleic acid (38.28). The highest quantity of linoleic acid was observed in T. molitor (larvae) (10.89), and in L. axin the highest content of linolenic acid (7.82) was obtained. A comparison between the species under the present investigation revealed that, in general, the insects are poor in caproic, caprilic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitoleic and linolenic acids, because the quantities were either minimal or could not be detected at all. They had moderate quantities of stearic, palmitic and linoleic acids and had high quantities of oleic acid. Finally it was concluded that although a particular insect species is unable to fulfil the total fatty acid need for a human, if consumed in combination they could definitely be able to supply a good amount of this highly valued nutrient.

Abstract The red sunflower seed weevil, Smicronyx fulvus L., is a univoltine seed-feeding pest of cultivated sunflower, Helianthus annuus L. Artificial infestations of S. fulvus onto sunflowers with traditional (&lt;25% oleic acid), mid-oleic (55–75%), or high oleic (&gt;80%) fatty acid profiles were used to test if fatty acids could be used as natural markers to estimate the proportion of weevils developing on oilseed sunflowers rather than wild Helianthus spp. and confection (non-oil) types. Oleic acid (%) in S. fulvus confirmed the fatty acid compositions of mature larvae and weevil adults reflected their diets, making primary (oleic or linoleic) fatty acids feasible as natural markers for this crop-insect combination. Oleic acid in wild S. fulvus populations in North Dakota suggests at least 84 and 90% of adults originated from mid-oleic or high oleic sunflower hybrids in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Surveys in 2017 (n = 156 fields) and 2019 (n = 120 fields) extended information provided by S. fulvus fatty acid data; no significant spatial patterns of S. fulvus damage were detected in samples, damage to oilseed sunflowers was greater than confection (non-oil) types, and the majority of damage occurred in ≈10% of surveyed fields. Combined, data suggest a few unmanaged or mismanaged oilseed sunflower fields are responsible for producing most S. fulvus in an area. Improved management seems possible with a combination of grower education and expanded use of non-insecticidal tactics, including cultural practices and S. fulvus-resistant hybrids.

Abstract Objectives The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of 2’fucosyllactose (2’FL) and fat blends on growth, body composition and fatty acid profile of the liver and brain using the neonatal pig as a model for the human infant. Methods Pigs (3 d old) were randomly assigned to either: 1. control, 2. Palm Olein (PO) fat blend – Low 2'-FL, 3. PO – High 2'-FL, 4. High oleic acid (HO) – Low 2'-FL, 5. HO FB – High 2'-FL, 6. PO FB – GLA, or 7. kept with their sows. Pigs in groups 1 to 6 received 250 ml·kg−1·d−1 of formula in 5 equal meals for 15 d. On day 14 of the study, groups 1–6 received intraperitoneal E. coli LPS challenge at 100 µg·kg−1 weight. Results Body weight was greater for piglets fed by sows than those in the other groups (P &lt; 0.001). In addition, % fat and bone mineral content were higher in the sow-fed group while lean % was less sow-fed piglets (group 7) compared with those in the other groups (P &lt; 0.05). Only longissimus weight expressed as a % of body weight, was greater for group 7 compared with all other groups (P &lt; 0.001). Soleus, semitendinosus, brain, heart and spleen weights as a % of body weight were similar across all groups. However, liver weight as a % of body weight was greater in groups 1–6 (3.7%) compared with group 7 (2.8%; P &lt; 0.001). The proportion of brain 16:1 fatty acid was less (0.83%) for groups 1–6 than for group 7 pigs (1.08%; P &lt; 0.0001). The proportion of 20:3 N6 was greatest (0.66%) for group 3 compared with groups 1 and 4 (0.55%; P &lt; 0.05). In addition, the proportion of 20:5 N3 was greatest (0.12%) for group 3 compared with groups 1 and 7 (0.07%; P &lt; 0.05). The proportion of liver 16:1, 18:0, and 18:1 cis-11 fatty acids were greater for group 7 (2.3, 23, 2.2%) than groups 1–6 (0.2, 20, 1.2%; P &lt; 0.0001). Conversely, the contribution of 14:0, 18:1 cis-9, 18:3 N6 cis-6,9,12, and 22:6 N3 were greater for pigs in groups 1–6 (1.3, 0.6, and 14, 7.8%) compared with those in group 7 (0.5, 8.5, 0.2 and 3.5%; P &lt; 0.0001). Conclusions Our data suggest that feeding 2’fucosyllactose had no effect on the body weight gain and composition in neonatal pigs.
