The effects of C:N controlled periphyton based organic farming of freshwater prawn on water quality parameters and biotic factors were investigated. The experiment had two treatments: T1 and T2 each with three replications. Stocking density was maintained at 20,000 juveniles ha-1. In T1, only commercially available prawn feed was applied and in T2, a locally formulated and prepared feed containing 24% crude protein with C:N ratio close to 20 was used, and maize flour and bamboo side shoots were provided for maintaining C:N ratio 20.Mean values of water quality parameters did not vary significantly (P>0.05) between treatments. Periphytic biomass in terms of dry matter, ash free dry matter (AFDM) and chlorophyll a showed significant difference (P<0.05) among different sampling months. Individual harvesting weight, individual weight gain, specific growth rates, gross and net yields of prawn were significantly higher (P<0.05) in T2 than T1. Therefore, it was concluded that freshwater prawn might consume periphyton biomass in C:N controlled periphyton based organic farming practices resulted a significantly (P<0.05) higher production of freshwater prawn than traditional farming.

An experiment was conducted to compare the performance between traditional farming and organic farming of freshwater prawn in respect of production and economics. The experiment had two treatments, namely: Traditional (TT) and Organic (TO) with same stocking density (20000 juvenile’s ha-1) in triplicate. In treatment TO, formulated feed with locally available ingredients were used, and maize flour and bamboo branches were provided for maintaining C:N ratio to 20 and for developing periphyton, respectively. In treatment TT, only commercially available prawn feed was applied. No fertilizers or other types of chemicals or antibiotics were used in both treatments. There were no significant differences (P?0.05) of different water quality parameters between both treatments. Weight gain and specific growth rate (% body weight day-1) of prawn was significantly higher (P<0.05) in TO than TT treatment. Survival rate and feed conversion ratio of prawn did not vary significantly between both treatments. Highest total yield was obtained from TO treatment (511.41 kg ha-1 90 d-1) compared to TT treatment (426.57 kg ha-1 90 d-1). Net yield was also significantly higher in treatment TO (428.32 kg ha-1 90 d-1) than TT (347.77 kg ha-1 90-1). Although there was no significant difference in benefit-cost ratio between both treatments, totalreturn was significantly higher in TO than TT treatment.J. Environ. This investigation was carried out to determine the haematological response of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings reared in a Fish cum-duck integrated system. One thousand and eighty pieces fingerlings with mean initial weight (MIW) and standard length (SL) (1.8 ± 0.22g, and 5.19 ± 0.44 cm) respectively were stocked for ten (10) weeks. The haematological investigation revealed that RBC and WBC increased significantly (P<0.05) within treatments. Other haematological variations were also observed in parameters such as PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC and Hb with significant decrease (P< 0.05) in their mean values within treatments as compared to the control. Water quality parameters such as Dissolved oxygen ad Transparency shows evidential significant different (P< 0.05), while parameters such as Temperature, Total dissolved solid (TDS), Nitrate, Phosphate, Biological oxygen demand (BOD), Turbidity and pH shows no significant difference (P> 0.05). This studies shows in conclusion, that there were variations in the haematological and water quality parameters, but it was noticed that the values recorded could not to a greater extent hurt the fish because is still within the tolerable limits as confirmed by other research evidences. More so, the level of gains outweighs the level of damages caused as compared to the economic approach.

Comparative study on African catfish hypophysation indices using ovaprim and chicken pituitary gland extract (CPGE) was carried out. Sixteen (16) African catfish brood stocks between 1100 and 2300 g in ratio 2:1 and four (4) numbers of layer birds (Gallus gallus domesticus) between 1200 and 2200 g in ratio 1:3 were used respectively. The experiment was batched into “A” and “B”. Batch ‘A’ was placed on ovaprim while batch ‘B’ was placed on CPGE. An indoor hatchery vat, measuring 0.6096 m x 1.8288 m x 0.3048 m each was used for the incubation. Digital measuring kits were used to monitor water quality parameters and measurement of the brood stocks weights independently. Brood stocks on ovaprim and CPGE treatments had the following mean hypophysation indices in these order: fecundity (11100±7690 and 17760±13863), latency period (9.53±0.54 and 9.77±0.49), fertilization percentage (94.03±5.90% and 90.6±10.11%), hatchability percentage (75.6±0.81% and79.35±10.27%), number of eggs produced (5889±657.37 and 9403.33±589.80), total number of larvae hatched (4717.33±1111.0 and 7111.33±506.64), SGR (0.67±0.31 and 1.1±0.31), and survival rate (64.81±0.71 and66.24±2.19) respectively. There was no significant difference (p = 0.05) in the mean values of fecundity, latency period, fertilization and hatchability percentages in both treatments but there was significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) in number of eggs produced and total number of larvae hatched in both treatments. The water quality parameters were within the range for induced breeding techniques and there was no significant difference (p= 0.05) in both experiments. Both ovaprim and CPGE had excellent results from the induced breeding of Clarias gariepinus and yielded good results. Therefore, CPGE could be recommended from the view point of excellent results and its availability from chicken slaughter houses as against ovaprim which are imported.

This trial aimed to evaluate effects of stocking densities of 1-5 fish/m2 on growth performance, survival rate and economic efficiency of Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) in earthen ponds. Fish with an initial length of 90.7 ± 0.1 mm and weight of 20.8 ± 0.1 g/fish and ponds with 600 m2 each and 1.5 m depth were used for this study. Experiment was designed with three treatments, including different stocking densities of 1, 3 and 5 fish/m2. The fish was fed with pellete feed containing 43 - 44% crude protein. Water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, transparency and ammonia concentration were measured once a week. Fish were sampled every 30-day intervals for length and weight measurement then for their growth estimation. Costs were recorded for economic efficiency estimation. Results showed that the water quality parameters were in suitable ranges for growth and development of Asian seabass. The final average length and weight of density 1 fish/m2 was significantly higher than those at 3 and 5 fish/m2 (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference on the fish growth in terms of daily length and weight gain, as well as survival rate and feed conversion ratio between different stocking densities. Asian seabass culture at 3 and 5 fish/m2 resulted in a higher profit compared to at 1 fish/m2. The highest economic efficiency in terms of area pond was showed at 5 fish/m2 treatment.

A water quality study was carried out at the Adolfo López Mateos (ALM) reservoir, one of the largest tropical reservoirs in Mexico, located within an intensive agricultural region. In this study, the seasonal and spatial variations of nine water quality parameters were evaluated at four different sites along the reservoir semiannually over a period of seven years (2012–2018), considering the spring (dry) and fall (rainy) seasons. An analysis of variance was performed to compare the mean values of the water quality parameters for the different sampling sites. Then, a multiparametric classification analysis was carried out to estimate the spatial density of the sampling points by using a probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier. The observations (seasonal and spatial) of the water quality parameters at the ALM reservoir revealed no significant influence. The trophic status was evaluated using the Carlson Modified Trophic State Index, finding the trophic state of the reservoir at the mesotrophic level, with nitrogen being the limiting nutrient. The PNN revealed neural interactions between total suspended solids (TSS) and the other four parameters, indicating that the concentration ranges of five parameters are equally distributed and classified.

Seasonal variation of the plankton populations with some water quality parameters of Borobila beel, Rangpur district was carried out during July 2003 to June 2004. Total plankton ranged from 98.3×104 to 35.0×105 cells/l with mean values of 19.67±9.77×105 cells/l. A total of 51 genera of planktons were recorded belonging to Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Dinophyceae, Crustacea and Rotifera. Among the phytoplankton, Euglenophyceae was the most dominant group and contributing 33% of total phytoplankton in Borobila beel. The greatest abundance of phytoplankton was recorded in November with an average number 28.83×105 cells/l. The minimum abundance of phytoplankton was recorded in January (61.7×104 cells/l). Among the zooplanktons Crustacea was dominant, contributing 71% of the total zooplankton population. The abundance of zooplankton showed two peaks of which one in the month of August (81.7x 104 cells/l) and another in the month of May (16.7 x104 cells/l). Phytoplankton and zooplankton have a nominal positive relationship. Zooplankton was less increased with the increasing of phytoplankton. Remote sensing applications in water resources management are quite essential in watershed characterization, particularly when mega basins are under investigation. Water quality parameters help in decision making regarding the further use of water based on its quality. Water quality parameters of chlorophyll a concentration, nitrate concentration, and water turbidity were used in the current study to estimate the water quality parameters in the dam lake of Wadi Baysh, Saudi Arabia. Water quality parameters were collected daily over 2 years (2017–2018) from the water treatment station located within the dam vicinity and were correspondingly tested against remotely sensed water quality parameters. Remote sensing data were collected from Sentinel-2 sensor, European Space Agency (ESA) on a satellite temporal resolution basis. Data were pre-processed then processed to estimate the maximum chlorophyll index (MCI), green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI) and normalized difference turbidity index (NDTI). Zonal statistics were used to improve the regression analysis between the spatial data estimated from the remote sensing images and the nonspatial data collected from the water treatment plant. Results showed different correlation coefficients between the ground truth collected data and the corresponding indices conducted from remote sensing data. Actual chlorophyll a concentration showed high correlation with estimated MCI mean values with an R2 of 0.96, actual nitrate concentration showed high correlation with the estimated GNDVI mean values with an R2 of 0.94, and the actual water turbidity measurements showed high correlation with the estimated NDTI mean values with an R2 of 0.94. The research findings support the use of remote sensing data of Sentinel-2 to estimate water quality parameters in arid environments.

Abstract The paper presents methodology of accurate mobile measurements of water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll “a” concentration, ammonium ion concentration, conductivity, pH and blue-green algae content in water. The measurements (probe EXO 2, YSI, USA) were made on various depths of probe immersion (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 m) and at different towing speeds of the probe (approx. 5.4 and 9.0 km/h). Static measurements carried out on the same route provided reference values for the measurements in motion to compare the repeatability of static and mobile methods. The tests were also evaluated by observation of probe behavior in motion, e.g. water disturbance intensity, access of light (sun rays) to the sensors. Statistical tests confirmed that the mean values of water quality parameters from mobile measurements with the speed of 5.4 km/h at the depth 1.5 m does not differ from the stationary measurements. Results of statistical analysis prove that water quality parameters can be measured accurately keeping established speed of towing the probe at the fixed depth. Methodology of mobile measurements elaborated in the frame of this work allows to collect vast number of data which can be used to obtain GIS point maps of water quality parameters in large water bodies.

With the target of increasing the shrimp (Penaeus monodon) production through farm development and improved grow out management, an experiment was conducted with three different stocking densities viz. 5/m2 (T1), 7/m2 (T2) and 9/m2 (T3). Results of the experiment revealed that, among the water quality parameters, values of dissolved oxygen and transparency were lower in the higher stocking densities with significant difference (p<0.05) among the treatments. Other water quality parameters were similar in all the treatments. Bacterial load in bottom sediment had the trend to increase with increasing culture period and showed significant difference (p<0.05) among the treatments with the highest in the higher stocking density. Soil pH in the end sample reduced a little bit in all the treatments than the initial. Deposition of organic matter, phosphorus and nitrogen was related to the respective stocking densities. Final weight gain and survival rate of shrimp were significantly (p<0.05) higher in T1 than in T2 and T3. Stocking density of 5/m2 showed the highest production of 759.14±19.002 kg/ha, which was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of 670.77±16.078 kg/ha obtained in T2, but similar to 701.24±33.507 kg/ha obtained in T3. The net economic return and BCR was also significantly higher (p<0.05) in the same stocking density (5/m2) compared to others. Whereas, FCR value was significantly lower (p<0.05) in T1 than the other two treatments. However, pond ecological conditions were more congenial for shrimp culture in lower stocking density (5/m2), which minimized the risk of disease outbreak in the respective stocking density, keeping the culture environment favorable. The matrinxã, Brycon amazonicus, is one of the main species being used for aquaculture and fishery activities in the Amazonian region, yet little is known about the parasites that cause its diseases. The present study monitored parasite fauna infesting an intensive husbandry system in a stream channel. The collections were carried out monthly from September, 1997 to January, 1998. Water quality parameters, fish removal procedures, as well as biometry and anaesthetic data were observed in order to monitor the management conditions. Of the 80 sampled fish, 71 (89%) were infested with four Monogenoidea species (Anacanthorus spiralocirrus, Jainus amazonensis, Tereancistrum kerri and Trinibaculum brazilensis), 12 (15%) one of Nematoda Spirocamallanus inopinatus, and three (3.75%) with the Copepoda Ergasilus bryconis. Monogenoidea presented the highest prevalence and intensity of infestation. The Kruskall-Wallis non-parametric variance analysis showed a significant difference (P < 0.05) in the monthly parasite indexes of A. spiralocirrus, J. amazonensis and T. brazilensis, however no significant difference (P > 0.05) was detected for T. kerri. Evaluation of the management conditions pointed out that monthly capture anaesthesia and hauling procedures may have been responsible for some of the clinical signals such as loss of scales, erosion and no pigments on the caudal fin and cornea opacity, which were the most frequently found injuries in husbandry.
