The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that the more than 53 million people living with a physical disability in the United States to participate in regular physical activities consisting of both aerobic and anaerobic components, if possible. Also, if individuals with physical disabilities are unable to meet the recommended physical activity guidelines, they are encouraged to do as much as their physical disability permits. Despite the recommended guidelines, several individuals with physical disabilities do not participate in regular physical activities. Prior research suggests that several societal and structural barriers in sport and exercise environments often negatively affect individuals with physical disabilities. Thus, it is essential for family members, healthcare practitioners, rehabilitation/recreational teams, and community leaders to encourage individuals with physical disabilities to conquer barriers that restrict participation.

OBJETIVO: Objetivou-se identificar as preferências, barreiras e motivações para a prática de atividade física por pessoas com deficiência física. MÉTODOS: A pesquisa é de caráter qualitativo, do tipo descritivo. Participaram do estudo 34 indivíduos com deficiência física, 27 eram ativos e 7 inativos, com média de idades de 35,5 anos. Para as coletas dos dados, utilizaram-se questionários sobre preferência, motivações e barreiras para prática de atividade física. RESULTADOS: A partir dos resultados, as preferências identificadas envolvem a prática esportiva, especialmente, o basquetebol em cadeira de rodas. Sobre as motivações, a dimensão saúde se sobressaiu como o fator motivacional mais citado. Quanto às barreiras, a falta de equipamentos disponíveis e adaptados foi a mais evidenciada para a prática de atividades físicas. CONCLUSÃO: Estes resultados subsidiam a criação de atividades específicas considerando as preferências e as motivações apresentadas pelas pessoas com deficiência física, aliado à tentativa de minimizar as barreiras para esta prática.ABSTRACT. Physical activity and physical disability: preferences, motivations and barriers for the practice of physical activity.OBJECTIVE: The objective was to identify preferences, barriers and motivations for the practice of physical activity by people with physical disabilities. METHODS: The research is qualitative, of the descriptive type. Thirty-four individuals with physical disability participated in the study, 27 were active and 7 were inactive, with an average age of 35.5 years. For data collection, questionnaires were used on preferences, motivations and barriers for the practice of physical activity. RESULTS: From the results, the identified preferences involve the sports practice, mainly, the wheelchair basketball. On the motivations, the health dimension stood out as the most cited motivational factor, both by the active and the inactive subjects. As for the barriers, the lack of equipment available and adapted was the most evidenced for the practice of physical activities. CONCLUSION: These results subsidize the creation of specific activities considering the preferences and motivations presented by people with physical disabilities, along with the attempt to minimize the barriers for this practice.

This study aimed to scrutinize the association of the number of chronic health conditions with health behavior. The health behavior was measured by meeting the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines (PAGs) for Americans for five physical activity levels for adults aged 18 years or older in the United States using data from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The empirical results of a multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that respondents living with chronic health conditions were more likely to participate in aerobic physical activities, but not meeting the PAGs. In the insufficient physical activity subgroup, all of the predicted odds ratios were greater than one and increased as the number of chronic health conditions increased. It implied that the increase in the number of chronic conditions was positively associated with participating in insufficient physical activity. Respondents who reported having less than three chronic health conditions were more likely to meet the aerobic physical activity guidelines compared with respondents living with three or more chronic health conditions. Importantly, respondents who reported having 4 or more chronic health conditions had a higher likelihood of meeting the recommendations for muscle-strengthening activity. However, chronic health conditions would significantly discourage respondents from participating in both aerobic and muscle-strengthening physical activities. In conclusion, this study found that chronic health conditions played an important role in determining regular participation in the level of physical activity for individuals living with chronic health conditions.

Background: To estimate the proportion of adults’ and parents’ knowledge of the adult aerobic and youth physical activity guidelines, respectively, in the United States. Methods: Data were analyzed from a national sample of adults in the 2017 ConsumerStyles survey. Prevalence of knowledge of the adult aerobic guideline (ie, 150 min/wk of moderate-intensity activity) was estimated among all respondents (n = 3910) and of the youth guideline (ie, 60 min/d of physical activity on 7 d/wk) among parents (n = 1288). Odds ratios were estimated using logistic regression models adjusting for demographic characteristics. Results: Overall, 2.5% (95% confidence interval, 2.0–3.1) of adults and 23.0% (95% confidence interval, 20.5–25.7) of parents were knowledgeable of the adult aerobic and youth guidelines, respectively. After adjustment, odds of knowledge of the adult guideline differed significantly by sex and physical activity level, whereas knowledge of the youth guideline differed by parental education level. Conclusions: Despite the release of the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans nearly a decade ago, most US adults and parents lack knowledge of the adult aerobic and youth physical activity guidelines. Effective communication strategies may help raise awareness of current and future editions of national guidelines for physical activity.

Regular and optimum activity is primarily one of the preconditions for obtaining and maintaining human´s physical and mental condition. For pupils with physical disabilities are suitably chosen gym activity also considered a suitable means of socialization and integration of pupils into the intact population. Th e importance of physical education and its implementation in the context of physical education in recent times we read mostly in the context of issues of integration of pupils with disabilities into mainstream schools. Th ere are not so many special educational books which are dealt with the shape of physical education and pupils in special schools. Th e main aim of this article is to describe the current status of participation of students with physical disability in the physical education and show the possible form and method of the gyms activity these students. Th e target group was students with cerebral palsy attending primary school for students with multiple disabilities in Olomouc. Th e results illustrate the importance of institutional forms of gyms activities such as physical education and school sports clubs, which are for most students the only physical activities throughout the day. Other factors signifi cantly aff ecting the rate of participation of pupils are level of pupils‘ motorical skills, family approach to the physical activities and pupils' access to informations in the physical activities field. Th ese aspects must by taken as the basis for planning and implementation of gyms activities pupils with physical disabilities.

Traditional physical activities have numerous physiological and psychosocial benefits for Indigenous youth around the world. Little is known about the positive health and wellness impacts of traditional physical activity experiences on Indigenous youths. The aim of this systematic review is to explore the holistic health and wellness impacts of traditional physical activities on Indigenous youth from certain North American and Oceania geographic areas. A systematic search of four electronic databases (PubMed, ERIC, Scopus and Web of Science) was conducted to identify peer-reviewed publications of qualitative research exploring the diverse health experiences of traditional physical activities for Indigenous youth in Canada, the United States of America, New Zealand and Australia. A qualitative synthesis of studies between 2006 and 2018 were included, and findings were synthesized using an integrated Indigenous-ecological model, which broadly captures health and wellness impacts under intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community and policy level outcomes using medicine wheel teachings. In total, nine studies were identified via this search. Overall, the literature described numerous emotional, mental and spiritual benefits of traditional physical activity, and youth experiences were affected by familial and communal relationships, and systemic factors. Among Indigenous youth, this research shows the importance of including traditional physical activity in future programs and partnerships with community expertise.

Sport participation is an important part of the development, both physically and mentally, of children and adolescents in the United States. Illness and injury associated with sport and physical activities may occur in the school setting. Although most sport-related illness and injury in students are considered minor emergencies, life-threatening illnesses or injuries may occur. It is important for the school nurse to recognize potential life-threatening emergencies associated with sport and physical activity, to initiate stabilization of the student with life-threatening symptoms, and to triage these students to an appropriate level of care (back to the classroom, home with their guardian with follow up at their primary healthcare provider’s office, or directly to the closest emergency department via Emergency Medical Services). This article specifically describes the initial assessment and management of three potentially life-threatening conditions associated with sport and physical activity, namely sudden cardiac arrest, hypovolemic shock, and spinal cord injury.

The uptake and benefits of the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults with Multiple Sclerosis (PAGs) have been validated, but there is limited understanding regarding the knowledge, needs, and preferences of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) for implementing the PAGs outside of clinical research. The authors conducted online, semistructured interviews with 40 persons with MS from across the United States seeking information on awareness of and potential approaches for increasing the uptake of the PAGs. They identified first impressions and potential approaches for increasing the uptake of the PAGs through inductive, semantic thematic analysis. Participants perceived the PAGs as a good introduction for structured exercise but desired more information on how to meet the PAGs. Participants further believed that modifying the PAGs for inclusivity and applying a multifaceted approach for dissemination and implementation may increase uptake of exercise behavior. Physical activity research in MS should include both analyzing the effects of exercise and the unique challenges faced by persons with MS in putting the PAGs into practice.

Background: Few Americans accumulate enough physical activity (PA) to realize its benefits. Understanding how and why individuals use their discretionary time for different forms of PA could help identify and rectify issues that drive individuals away from certain physical activities, and leverage successful strategies to increase participation in others. Methods: The authors analyzed approximately 30 years of changes in PA behavior by intensity, type, and mode, using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Results: Since 1988, the proportions of adults most frequently engaging in exercise, sport, or lifestyle physical activity have changed noticeably. The most apparent changes from 1988 to 2017 were the proportions most frequently engaging in Exercise and Sport. In addition, the proportion of time reportedly spent in vigorous-intensity PA decreased over time, particularly among male respondents. Moreover, the proportion of Americans reporting an “Other” PA mode increased substantially, suggesting a growing need for a greater variety of easily accessible options for adult PA. Conclusions: Over time, a smaller proportion of American adults reported participating in sport and exercise modalities and reported engaging more frequently in low-intensity physical activities.

Obesity is a growing health and socioeconomic issue in the United States.  College students are an important part of the alarming statistics involving weight gain. This study investigated how nutrition behaviors and physical activity modified students’ perceptions of body weight and nutrition knowledge. Furthermore, the study assessed gender and ethnicity as modifiers of nutrition behaviors, self-perception of body weight, and exercising habits among college students.
