We evaluated earthworm abundance and biomass in plantations of different poplar species and clones as well as the effect of some soil chemical and physical properties on them. Even-aged poplar species and clones, planted at Safrabasteh Poplar Research Station about 18 years ago in the north of Iran, included: Populus deltoides Bartr. cv. 69/55 (P. d. 69/55), Populus deltoides Bartr. cv. 63/51 (P. d. 63/51), Populus euramericana Guinier. cv. 45/51 (P. e. 45/51), Populus euramericana Guinier. triplo (P. e. triplo), and Populus caspica Born M. (P. caspica), as endemic and endangered poplar species, were selected in this study. Earthworm abundance and biomass, soil texture, bulk and particle density (BD, PD), pH, organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P) and exchangeable potassium (K) were evaluated. The results showed that the earthworm abundance and biomass, OC, P and N in P. d. 63/51 were higher than in the other poplar species and clones. The correlation coefficients showed a positive correlation of OC, N and a negative correlation of pH, clay, BD and P with earthworm biomass. Based on the results, compared to the other species and clones P. d. 63/51 creates favourable conditions to produce more organic matter and higher abundance and biomass of earthworms, hence it could be beneficial for maintaining the soil quality status for successive plantings.

Abstract Investigating the population dynamic of important cotton pests on new cotton varieties is important. Cotton cultivars have important pests such as thrips, aphids, whitefly and bollworm. Considering the premature cultivars with proper yield for second cultivation in cotton-growing Golestan province at the north of Iran, this study seems necessary. This genotypes was cultivated with 9 treatments in 4 replicates. A completely randomized block design was carried out in Hashem Abad research station in a spray-free plot with the dimensions of 30 × 80 cm in 2018-2019 years. According to the results of this study, analysis of variance of two years showed that the yield of N2G80 with 1538 g in the plot with 41.7% lint percentage had the highest yield, and M13 with 685 g in the plot and 35.8% lint percentage in the lowest yield they had.The infestation rate of the genotypes tested in the population of green aphid of cotton in K880-2 and Golestan® cultivars was 48.88 and 40.31 in aphid with the highest density, and the SKT-133 and TBL-60 genotype respectively with 27.15 and 29.11 aphids per leaf had the least infestation. The amount of infestation of the genotypes tested to the population of whitefly cotton on the N2G80 and TBL-60 genotype was 90.76 and 68.86 whitefly in the leaf with the highest infestation and N2G80 and TBL-60 genotype respectively with 40.05 and 75.51 white fly in leaf were the least infested. Correlation coefficient between traits was equal to 0.55. The number of bolls per plant was not correlated with other traits including boll weight, lint percentage, aphid and white fly.

To clarify the effect of shelterwood silvicultural method on the diversity of plant species in a beech (<I>Fagus orientalis</I>) forest in the north of Iran, we compared the plant species diversity in three compartments (treatments) where regeneration cuttings were performed with that in a primary compartment. The sampling procedure was a systematic random method and the tree, tree regeneration, shrub and herbaceous species were identified and measured within sampling plots. Results indicated that the mean tree richness in compartment No. 1 (only with one seed cutting) was higher than in the other compartments. The mean richness of understorey species in compartment No. 4 (with all regeneration cuttings) was higher than in the other compartments. The mean evenness (<I>E<sub>Var</sub></I>) of tree species in compartment No. 4 was higher than in the other compartments. The mean evenness of understorey species in compartment No. 1 was higher than in the other compartments. The mean tree diversities (i.e. 1-D, N<sub>2</sub>, H´ and N<sub>1</sub>) in compartment No. 1 were higher than in the other compartments. In addition, the mean diversities of understorey species in compartment No. 1 were higher than in the other compartments.

Sphagnum mires on the Greater Caucasus are rare, characterized by the presence of relict plant communities of glacial age and are in a stage of degradation. The study of Sphagnum of Chefandzar and Masota mires is carried out for the first time. Seven species of Sphagnum are recorded. Their distribution and frequency within the North Caucasus are analyzed. Sphagnum contortum, S. platyphyllum, S. russowii, S. squarrosum are recorded for the first time for the study area and for the flora of North Ossetia. The other mosses found in the study area are listed.

Our study compares the content in polyphenolic compounds and hypericin, in four species of Hypericum - H. perforatum L., H. maculatum Cr., H. hirsutum L., H. tetrapterum Fr. (syn. Hypericumacutum Mnch.) harvested from spontaneous flora in the north-western area of Transylvania, Romania. These species represent an important source of such compounds with different biological actions. After making the extracts, they were subjected to HPLC-SM analysis. The presence of rutoside in the largest amount (462.82 mg %) in the H. perforatum extract was observed, this containing most of the flavonoid heterosides. For the species H. maculatum, the presence in a much higher amount of the hyperoside (976.36 mg %) is characteristic compared to the other species. Quercetol is the best represented of the flavonoid aglycons, its concentration being the highest in H. hirsutum (659.66 mg %). The hypericin content ranges from 0.2171 g % in the H. tetrapterum extract, to 0.0314 g % in the methanol extract of H. maculatum.The highest antioxidant properties measured by FRAP method were recorded in the case of H. perforatum and H. maculatum.

Objective:Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium which has a serious effect on up to half of the world’s population and has been related to different gastric diseases. The goal of this study was to assess the frequency of babA, cagE and cagA genotypes among H. pylori strains isolated from gastric biopsies of endoscopic patients in the north of Iran.Methods:The present study was performed on 90 strains of H. pylori isolated from patients with gastric diseases (Gastric ulcer (GU), Duodenal ulcer (DU), Gastritis (G), Non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) and Gastric adenocarcinoma (GC)). DNA was extracted from all isolated strains and PCR method was performed to detect the prevalence of babA2, cagE and cagA genes using specific primers.Results:Among 90 samples of H. pylori, babA2, cagE, and cagA genes were detected in 42.2%, 30% and 82.2% of strains respectively. The statistical analysis showed that the prevalence of cagA gene in GU, G, DU, and NUD was significantly higher than other genes. Moreover, cagA, and babA2 genes were significantly more prevalent in GC patients compared to cagE gene. Our isolates exhibited 8 distinct arrangements of virulence patterns. The occurrence of cagA (35.6%) was the most prevalent pattern followed by cagA/babA2 (20%) and cagA/babA2/cagE (14.4%).Conclusion:In summary, as first report from Guilan province in the north of Iran, we showed significant association between the presence of babA2, cagE, and cagA genes in different types of gastric disorders.
