The aim of the experiment was to determine how the content of lupin meal in the diet for commercial laying hens would affect the quality of fat in the egg yolk. A total of 210 Isa Brown laying hens was divided into three groups: the control group C (fed a mixture containing only soybean meal as a source of protein) and two experimental groups: EN 50% (fed a mixture containing 50% of soybean meal and 50% of white lupin seed meal, Zulika variety) and EN 100% (fed a mixture containing only white lupin seed meal as a source of protein). The results of the experiment using lupin seed meal in the feed mixture as a 50% and 100% replacement of extracted soybean meal confirmed the positive effect of lupin-based diets on egg yolk fat composition. Although the diets did not affect the fat content of the egg yolk, some other changes in the quality of the egg yolk were demonstrated during laying. These changes in egg yolk fat were characterized by a decrease (P ≤ 0.05) of saturated fatty acids (SFA), an increase (P ≤ 0.05) of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), but only in some of them (C17:1 – heptadecenoic acid; C20:1n9 – eicosenoic acid and C22:1n9 – erucic acid) and, what is important, by a significant (P ≤ 0.05) increase of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) from the n-6 group (C18:2n6 – linoleic acid and C20:2n-6 – eicosadienoic acid) and n-3 group (C18:3n3 – α-linolenic acid; C20:5n3 – eicosapentaenoid acid and C22:5n3 – docosapentaenoic acid). From these results it is evident that using lupin meal in the feed mixtures for commercial laying hens increases the nutritional value and health benefit of the egg through the improvement of the levels of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.

Melanogenesis is a complex process that can lead to pigmentation defects. Various chemical skin-lightening products have been developed to treat pigmentation disorders. However, these chemical products can cause harmful adverse effects. Therefore, the development of safer, natural bleaching ingredients is a trend for sustainability. It has been reported that unsaturated fatty acids exhibit significant antimelanogenic effects. Sapindus mukorossi seed oils contain abundant unsaturated fatty acids; however, these have not yet been investigated for beneficial effects on skin tone evenness. In this study, we tested the possibility of using S. mukorossi oil for the treatment of hyperpigmentation in an in vitro model. Free fatty acid compositions and β-sitosterol were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and high-pressure liquid chromatography, respectively. The effect of S. mukorossi oil on melanoma B16F10 cell viability was detected using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)- 2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay. The inhibitive effects of fatty acids and β-sitosterol in S. mukorossi oil on α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH)-induced melanogenesis was evaluated by detecting melanin formation and tyrosinase activity. Our results showed that S. mukorossi oil produced no significant cytotoxicity in B16F10 cells at various concentrations compared with the control group. The enhancement of melanin formation induced by α-MSH was reduced by S. mukorossi oil. We also found that the primary fatty acid contributing to the antimelanogenesis effect was eicosenoic acid. These results suggest that S. mukorossi seed oil can effectively inhibit melanogenesis and has the potential for future development as a de-hyperpigmentation product within a waste utilization context.

Sweet white lupin (Lupinus albus) is an emerging crop in Ontario and, in 1993, up to 600 ha acres of lupin were planted. This crop is adapted to cool and moderately warm climates, is frost-resistant to −2 °C, requires sandy to loamy soils, requires inoculation with Bradyrhizobium sp. to achieve high yields, and improves soil structure and nutrients when included in a crop rotation. The crop requires 119–135 d to mature and is thermosensitive; both traits can reduce yield in seasons with unfavourable environments. The crop is not particularly competitive with weeds and effective weed control is a critical factor in crop production. Lupin is attacked by several pathogens and insects but knowledge on appropriate pest management practices needs to be improved. The harvested seed of sweet white lupin is primarily used as an on-farm source of protein. Seeds do not require heat treatment prior to being used as animal feed and can be included as a part of the protein component in the diets of ruminants, swine and poultry. High protein digestibility and high fibre content of lupin seeds can limit incorporation into the diets of ruminants and swine, respectively. Lupin can be beneficial in human diets because milk from lupin-fed animals contains more unsaturated fatty acids and less saturated fatty acids than milk from animals fed soybean meal. Sweet white lupin has several advantages and disadvantages as an emerging crop in Ontario, but additional research and development are needed. Key words: Lupin (sweet white), Lupinus albus

Carotenoids that do not have provitamin activity – lycopene and astaxanthin can accumulate in the yolks of chicken eggs and give them colour, as well as affect the metabolism of lipids and fatty acids, which determine the biological value and functional capacity of such products. The aim of this study was to determine the fatty acid composition of egg yolk lipids by adding oily extracts of lycopene (20, 40 and 60 mg/kg feed) or astaxanthin (10, 20 and 30 mg/kg feed) to the diet of laying hens. 45 High Line W36 chickens at the age of 24 weeks were used for the experiment. It was found that the addition of lycopene at doses of 20, 40 and 60 mg/kg and astaxanthin at doses of 10, 20 and 30 mg/kg of feed for 30 days did not significantly affect the ratio of saturated and most monounsaturated fatty acids in egg yolks and Σ SFA and Σ MUFA. Lycopene at a dose of 20 mg/kg of feed reduced the content of cis-11-eicosenoic acid, and astaxanthin at a dose of 10 mg/kg of feed reduced the content of palmitoleic acid by increasing the proportion of cis-10-heptadecenoic acid in the lipids of egg yolks. Addition of lycopene to the feed of laying hens at a dose of 20 mg/kg of feed caused a decrease in the particles of linoleic, which belongs to ω6 PUFA, and cis-eicosenoic acids. Astaxanthin enrichment of the diet of laying hens at a dose of 30 mg/kg reduced the proportion of cis-4,7,10,13,16,19-docosahexaenoic acid, which belongs to ω3 PUFA, in the lipids of the yolks. Σ PUFA decreased in the lipid fraction of yolks only under the influence of lycopene supplements at a dose of 20 mg/kg of feed. Feeding of laying hens with lycopene and astaxanthin supplements did not affect Σ ω3 PUFA and Σ ω6 PUFA. Lycopene at a dose of 20 mg/kg decreased, and astaxanthin at a dose of 30 mg/kg of feed increased ω3/ω6 PUFA in lipids of egg yolks. The results of the research can be used to select oils in combination with carotenoids of natural origin in the diet of chickens during the creation of a model of enrichment of egg yolks by individual representatives of ω3 PUFA and ω6 PUFA.

Context It is hypothesised that the use of processed soybean for feedlot beef cattle improves feed efficiency and produces beef with a better fatty acid profile for human health. Aims This study aimed to evaluate average daily gain, feed efficiency, carcass traits, chemical composition, fatty acid profile and colour in the beef of young bulls fed diets with ground or extruded soybean. Methods A total of 60 young Zebu bulls (Nellore or Nellore crossed with other Zebu breeds) with an average initial liveweight of 320 ± 8.12 kg and an average initial age of 20 ± 2 months were randomly assigned to receive one of the following diets for 84 days: dehulled and defatted soybean meal (3.22% of ether extract), ground soybean (6.51% of ether extract) or extruded soybean (6.37% of ether extract). The fatty acid profiles of these animals were analysed using high-resolution gas chromatography. The CIE L*a*b* colour space model was used to numerically describe the colour during the aging period (0, 7, 14 and 21 days). Key results Diet had no effect on the average daily gain, feed efficiency or carcass traits of the animals (P > 0.05). Protein, ether extract and ash composition of the Longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle were not affected (P > 0.30) by the use of processed soybean grains. The ground soybean diet decreased oleic acid and C18:2 c9, t11 concentrations, but increased C18:2 t10, c12 and trans-octadecenoic acid isomer concentrations in the LL muscle compared with those in the dehulled and defatted soybean meal and extruded soybean diets (P < 0.05). Muscle from bulls fed processed soybean exhibited greater concentrations of stearic acid and saturated fatty acids, and a lower concentration of unsaturated fatty acids, as well as a decreased unsaturated fatty acids:saturated fatty acids ratio (P < 0.05). Processed soybean grains did not affect (P > 0.05) the LL muscle pH or colour. Conclusions The use of ground or extruded soybean did not affect the performance, carcass traits, LL protein, ether extract or ash composition, and had no impact on beef colour compared with the diet containing soybean meal. Processed whole soybeans in the diet did not increase unsaturated fatty acids or conjugated linoleic acid in beef compared with a diet without soybean meal. Implications Up to 20% of ground or extruded soybean in feedlot beef cattle can be used as a replacement for soybean meal and corn.

The oil content and fatty acids profile of a number of Polish wild species of rose fruits were examined by GC. The total fatty acid contents ranged from 6.5% to 12.9% of dry mass in fruits. The composition of oils was similar in the investigated species. 17 components were identified. An average composition was estimated as follows: linoleic acid (44.4-55.7%), a-linolenic acid (18.6-31.4%), oleic acid (13.5-20.3%), palmitic acid (2.3-3.3%), stearic acid (1-2.5%), octadecenoic acid (0.38-0.72%), eicosenoic acid (0.3-0.7%), eicosadienoic acid (0-0.16%), erucic acid (0.03-0.17%) and minor fatty acids. The results indicate that rose fruits are a rich source of unsaturated fatty acids, especially in <em>R. rubiginosa</em>, <em>R. rugosa</em> and <em>R. dumalis</em>. There were statistically significant (p&lt;0.05) differences in fatty acid compositions of some species. Fatty acids were suggested to have a potential chemotaxonomic value in this genus.

With the development of a large-scale and intensive production industry, the number of laying hens in China is rapidly increasing. Oils, as an important source of essential fatty acids, can be added to the diet to effectively improve the production performance and absorption of other nutrients. The present review discusses the practical application of different types and qualities of oils in poultry diets and studies the critical effects of these oils on production performance, such as the egg weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and various egg quality parameters, including the albumen height, Haugh units, yolk color, and saturated/unsaturated fatty acids. This article reviews the effects of different dietary oil sources on the production performance and egg quality of laying hens and their potential functional mechanisms and provides a reference for the selection of different sources of oils to include in the diet with the aim of improving egg production. This review thus provides a reference for the application of oils to the diets of laying hens. Future studies are needed to determine how poultry products can be produced with the appropriate proper oils in the diet and without negative effects on production performance and egg quality.

Abstract The study was carried out involving 48 fattening pigs split into 3 groups of equal size: one control (I) and two experimental (II and III). The experimental factor was low-tannin faba bean seeds of the Albus variety (group II) or Amulet variety (group III) introduced to experimental feed mixtures as a partial replacement for soybean meal - the only protein-rich material in the control diet. It was noticed that the partial replacement of soybean meal with faba bean meal had no statistically significant effect on: the daily gains of pigs, feed conversion, meatiness and fattening grades and meat acidity (pH1 and pH24), water holding capacity and muscle colour parameters (L*a*b*). However, the drip loss from longissimus muscles of pigs fed with diets containing low-tannin faba bean was lower and the difference between the group receiving Albus faba bean and the control group was confirmed to be statistically significant (P≤0.05). In the analysed longissimus lumborum muscle, no differences were recorded between the groups in terms of the content of protein, fat, minerals, or saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, including monounsaturated fatty acids. However, it was determined that the muscles of the animals from groups II and III contained more essential unsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (P≤0.05 - between groups I and III ). Albus faba bean seeds introduced to the feed mixture had a beneficial effect on the sensory characteristics of the evaluated muscle since, compared to the longissimus lumborum muscle from the control group, it was characterised by significantly (P≤0.05) improved juiciness, tenderness and palatability.

Abstract The study was conducted to determine the response in growth performance, physicochemical properties and fatty acid composition of broiler meat fed incremental levels of M. pruriens seed meal. A total of 112 Cobb 500, seven days old, unsexed broiler chicks with body weight of 150 ± 5.47 g/bird (mean ±SD) were used. Chicks were allotted to pens in a completely randomized design hence assigned to four experimental diets containing 0, 10, 15, and 20% of MPSM, respectively. Each diet was offered ad libitum with clean water to 28 broilers in each treatment. There was a linear decrease in average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG) and final body weight (FBW) with incremental levels of MPSM (P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) increased linearly with increasing MPSM levels while Final Body Wight (FBW) decreased linearly with increasing levels of MPSM (P < 0.05). Meat pH24 and colour parameters showed no relationship with increasing levels of MPSM (P > 0.05). Thawing loss, carcass weight and cooking loss showed a linear increase with increasing levels of MPSM (P < 0.05). However, shear force showed a linear decrease with increasing levels of MPSM (P > 0.05). Muscle fat, fat free dry matter (FFDM) and moisture, mono-unsaturated fatty acids and margaric acid showed no relationship with increasing levels of MPSM (P > 0.05), however, a linear decrease (P < 0.05) on myristic acid and palmitic acid with incremental levels of MPSM was observed. Arachidic acid, and α-Linolenic acid increased linearly with inclusion level of MPSM (P < 0.05). Other poly-unsaturated fatty acids, fatty acid ratios and health lipid indices indicators showed no relationship with increasing levels of MPSM (P > 0.05). Increasing inclusion levels of MPSM impairs growth performance of broilers and may also improve broiler quality and fatty acid some fatty acids.
