ABSTRACTMaterials in use or under consideration for many applications in new and emerging technologies are often available only in small quantities and many times in the form of thin films, wafers and sheets. Such size and form limitations present a number of challenges to those wishing to evaluate thermal performance characteristics. This has resulted in a need to develop totally new transient or modify current transient and steady state techniques significantly. Various new or modified techniques to measure thermophysical properties are described. Illustrations of, applications to and results on semiconductors, superconductors, diamonds, polymers, composites and layered structures will be discussed.

The analysis of properties of thermosensitive elements used in devices for monitoring the temperature and thermophysical properties of the medium and materials is carried out. Thermal converters made of various materials are considered: metals, semiconductors, oxides. The sensitivity to infrared radiation of the considered elements is analyzed. The range of measured temperatures and the linearity of the output characteristics of the converters are investigated. A conclusion is made about the purposefulness of using one or another type of thermosensitive elements.

This paper presents a theoretical solution for transient heat conduction in a rod of finite length with variable thermal properties. A numerical procedure is developed and the results of one example are presented and compared with the corresponding solution for the case of constant properties. Application to the problem of determination of thermophysical properties is discussed briefly.

New data for thermophysical properties of materials are being discovered and measured routinely throughout the world, but sometimes conflicts exist in the published data from various sources. We introduce an online thermal properties database intended for use as a repository for experimentally obtained thermophysical properties of materials by researchers across the globe. This online database is a part of www.thermalhub.org, which is a NSF-funded cyber infrastructure initiative aimed at serving the global heat transfer community. The relevant details associated with an experiment, such as the material type and composition, the thermophysical property measured, the test methods employed, the test conditions of the experiment, the results of the experiments, the uncertainty associated with the experimental results, and the literature where the results are published, are included as fields in the online database. It is known that one thermophysical property can be tested by various methods whose results may differ. Similarly, one thermophysical property can be experimentally measured under varying test conditions to produce different results.

The growing interest in developing applications for the storage of thermal energy (TES) is highly linked to the knowledge of the properties of the materials that will be used for that purpose. Likewise, the validity of representing processes through numerical simulations will depend on the accuracy of the thermal properties of the materials. The most relevant properties in the characterization of phase change materials (PCM) are the phase change enthalpy, thermal conductivity, heat capacity and density. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is the most widely used technique for determining thermophysical properties. However, several unconventional methods have been proposed in the literature, mainly due to overcome the limitations of DSC, namely, the small sample required which is unsuitable for studying inhomogeneous materials. This paper presents the characterization of two commercial paraffins commonly used in TES applications, using methods such as T-history and T-melting, which were selected due to their simplicity, high reproducibility, and low cost of implementation. In order to evaluate the reliability of the methods, values calculated with the proposed alternative methods are compared with the results obtained by DSC measurements and with the manufacturer’s technical datasheet. Results obtained show that these non-conventional techniques can be used for the accurate estimation of selected thermal properties. A detailed discussion of the advantage and disadvantage of each method is given.

The article highlights the results of the study of thermophysical properties of ultrathin liquid insulation when used to protect steel elements embedded in a multilayer outer wall. Conducted graphical analysis of the problem being solved. The results of temperature calculations with linear thermal properties showed that the unprotected insulation of steel embedded elements may freeze, and the formation of mold on the inner surface of the wall. The use of superfine heat insulation for thermal protection of mortgages of steel elements inside the construction of multilayer exterior walls gives a positive result. As a result of constructive solutions with the use of superfine thermal insulation can increase the average temperature of the inner bearing part of a wall of concrete. In addition, there is also a possibility to increase the temperature on the contact line between steel element with a load-bearing wall of concrete.

The present paper addresses the temperature dependent elastic, mechanical and thermal properties of NaCl structure (B1 type) holmium monopnictides, HoX (X = N, P, As, Sb, Bi) computed using Coulomb and Born repulsive potentials extended up to second nearest neighbors. The second-order elastic constants (SOECs) of single crystals HoX are calculated as a function of temperature in the range 0–500[Formula: see text]K. The compounds under study are found to be brittle in nature. Beside these calculations, the theoretical hardness has been obtained for various rare-earth monopnictides using the elastic properties in the polycrystalline approach. The obtained hardness values indicate HoN to be hard, but cannot be considered super hard. The anisotropic nature of the chosen single crystal is an important physical quantity in studying the directional dependent thermal properties such as Debye temperature and thermal conductivity computed using ultrasonic velocities along different crystallographic directions. The obtained results are discussed in correlation with mechanical and thermophysical properties of similar materials.
