The author investigates the organizational measures of modern Ukrainian society on the way of forming an effective system of science in accordance with the requirements of civilization development. Chronological boundaries of the study - the beginning of the nineteenth century until the present. The methodological basis for the study is the theoretical concept of the cyclical development of historical phenomena in relation to the world and local cultural spaces. The research is aimed at the cultural view of the modern problem of the modernization of the institute of science within the historically formed educational and scientific spaces of Ukraine. Taking a public view of the functioning of science in society for Ukraine is to identify it organizationally with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (UAN) was founded on November 1, 1918. The Commission was responsible for the rationale for the creation of the Academy to draft a bill on the founding of the Academy of Sciences in Kyiv. The Commission included representatives of the Ukrainian scientific elite of that time, led by V.I. Vernadsky. The main functions of the UAN were the organization and coordination of the scientific forces of the state. The history of the development of the UAN testifies to the civilization content of the strategy for the development of national science for the entire period of the twentieth century. The beginning of the XXI century declared a new system of relations in the world society. The meaningfulness of such relationships is marked by a new post-industrial society. For Ukraine, the reform of the institute of science after world shifts is becoming urgent. The modern scientific space of Ukraine can be characterized as functioning of the coordinate system "universityacademy". An appeal to the principles of scientific democracy should ensure a balance between the development of science in the university sector and academic institutions. The financial self-determination of universities has an opportunity to actualize scientific research. The University is able today to ensure the development of the humanitarian component of science, which reproduces the traditions of national culture. The academic structure needs to reload the strategy for reforming the material and technical support of research work for the branches of science, which have high ratings in the countries of the world.

The research, based on the epistolary data, memoirs and articles, deals with the almost fortyyear long history of business and friendly relations between O. Konyskyi and O. Barvinskyi. Being citizens of the antagonistic empires, they tried to bring the inhabitants of the Dnieper Ukraine and Western Ukraine territories closer by means of the cultural and editorial projects. During the last decades of the 19th century O. Konyskyi and O. Barvinskyi actively participated in cultural, educational, social, and political life of Ukrainians. They had managed to start a number of projects that considerably changed the cultural and educational landscape of Ukraine. They took an active part in the establishment and subsequent reformation of Shevchenko Scientifi c Society in Lviv, which became the prototype of the national academy of sciences; they contributed to development of such editorial projects as “Pravda” and “Ruska istorychna biblioteka”; moreover, they published a range of school textbooks in the Ukrainian language. The paper also covers their active participation in establishing the Department of the Southern Europe history in Lviv University and their attempts to popularize and implement the ideas of the ‘new era’. Sometimes they sacrifi ced their own plans and even reputation realizing the projects that weren’t popular among the contemporary public but promised great prospects for Ukrainians in general. Therefore, O. Konyskyi and O. Barvinskyi were fulfi lling a very ambitious task of gaining the unity of the Ukrainian state and ensuring the possibilities for the national, cultural and educational evolution of Ukrainian society.

Review of the scientific report of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: Where is Ukraine going in the 21st century? Social changes in Ukrainian society in the context of economic globalization: sociological dimension. Scientific report/ T.Petrushyna, A.Arseienko, V.Butkaliuk. Kyiv: Institute of Sociology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2020. 120p. ISBN 978-966-02-9424-0. The authors of the report set themselves a goal: to give the most complete and holistic picture of the processes taking place today in Ukraine in the context of global social changes in a concise form, in order not only to convey their conclusions to the scientific community, but also to inform the general public and the authorities about the real situation in the country. And the real situation, according to the authors of the report, "threatens the ability of our state to reproduce its sovereignty and ensure the preservation of the country's territorial integrity". The impression after reading the report is such that it is still putting it gently about threats! Not even gently, but veiled. Indeed, the words about Ukraine's inability to reproduce its sovereignty and ensure the preservation of the country's territorial integrity are a euphemism for stating Ukraine's dying, sliding towards ruin, towards death. And not because Russia or some other state will dismember it, but because the state's economy is withering, the social sphere is deteriorating, the population is becoming impoverished, young people are leaving to live abroad, and, ultimately, Ukraine is dying.
