Introduction. Today, there are not enough studies demonstrating the relationship between body composition disorders in men with excess adipose tissue and metabolic syndrome (MS), depending on the content of testosterone, estradiol, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), anthropometric parameters, or blood pressure (BP).Aim: to study the relationship between disturbances in anthropometric parameters, the level of sex hormones and BP in men with MS.Materials and Methods. The study included 64 overweight men. The patients were divided into 3 groups depending on the body mass index (BMI): group 1 with overweight (n = 24), group 2 with the first degree of obesity (n = 21), group 3 with the second and third degrees of obesity (n = 19). A correlation analysis was carried out between the results of bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and laboratory data, and the level of difference between the groups under consideration was determined.Results. The relationship was revealed between the parameters of body composition in men with overdeveloped adipose tissue and MS, depending on the level of testosterone, estradiol, SHBG, anthropometric parameters and blood pressure indicators. A moderate negative correlation was observed across the sample between the testosterone level and a number of anthropometric indicators: waist circumference (WC), OT/hip circumference (HC) and BMI (p < 0.05). A weak negative correlation was found between the level of testosterone, fat mass (FM) and the proportion of FM in the general sample. A weak negative correlation between SBP and testosterone across the sample found, while in group 3 – a moderate negative correlation. A positive weak correlation was found between testosterone and estradiol in the general sample and in group 2. In group 1, this correlation is moderately positive and in t group 3 – a negative weak correlation. A positive correlation can be traced between testosterone and SHBG: moderate in the entire sample, in groups 1 and 2, and noticeable in group 3.Conclusion. The relationship was revealed between the parameters of body composition in men with excess adipose tissue and MS, depending on the content of testosterone, estradiol, SHBG, anthropometric parameters and ВР. This confirms the consistency and multicomponent nature of the obesity problem.

Blood pressure variability (BPV) has been identified as an important risk factor for cardiovascular events. The white coat effect (WCE), which is measured as the first systolic blood pressure (SBP) measurement minus the mean of the second and third measurements, is a BPV indicator within a single visit. In total, 2,972 participants who had three measurements of BP within a single visit were included. The participants were divided into three groups based on their WCE percentiles: Group 1 (WCE2.5-97.5, 2.5–97.5th percentiles of WCE), Group 2 (WCE2.5, 0–2.4th percentiles of WCE), and Group 3 (WCE97.5, 97.6–100th percentiles of WCE). A multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between WCE and stroke after adjusting for cardiovascular disease risk factors. Compared with the WCE2.5-97.5 group, the OR for stroke in the WCE2.5 group was 2.78 (95% CI: 1.22, 6.36, p = 0.015 ). After adjusting for cardiovascular factors, OR increased to 3.12 (95% CI: 1.22, 7.96, p = 0.017 ). The OR of WCE for stroke was 0.93 (95%CI: 0.87, 0.99, p = 0.036 ). BPV within a single visit is associated with stroke. The value and direction of the change may be important as well.

Aim: to study the relationship between blood level of «youth protein» GDF11 and hemostatic parameters in healthy people and hypertensive patients. Materials and methods. We examined 102 women: 30 relatively healthy women (group 1); 37 women with hypertensive disease (HD) who received antihypertensive therapy (group 2); 35 women with HD who received antihypertensive therapy and regular courses of kinesitherapy (group 3). Results. In hypertensive women there were no significant deviations in platelets number, values of activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin and thrombin times, fibrinogen concentration, but the rate of formation and size of fibrin clot were significantly increased that was the evidence of significant hypercoagulation. At the same time in patients with HD significant changes in hemodynamic and oscillatory indices were revealed that illustrated the disorders of axial and parietal blood flow. In patients with GB who received antihypertensive therapy and regular courses of kinesitherapy (over the time of 2-3 years) we found normalization of blood pressure, also thrombodynamic and hemodynamic parameters approached to normal. Conclusion. In women with HD who received antihypertensive therapy blood content of «youth protein» GDF11 was significantly reduced. Numerous positive and negative correlations between the level of GDF11, hemostatic parameters, blood pressure and hemodynamic and oscillatory indices that characterized axial and parietal blood flow were revealed in patients with GB.

Background: Whilst most anthropometrical research within sport has focussed on muscle and fat distribution, more studies are measuring the relationship between stature and wingspan, which has been found to be selective criteria in many sports. Methods: In this study the stature, wingspan and stature-to-wingspan ratio (S:W) was recorded for N = 474 elite and international mixed martial arts (MMA) competitors who appeared in televised bouts over the course of one calendar year. Each weight division was split into three or four ranking groups (RG) depending on division size, as well as into groups depending on if the competitors had won a world title (Ch), competed for a world title (El) or had done neither (In). Results: One-way ANOVA (≤0.05) found that shorter competitors are ranked higher in flyweight and in the middle in women’s straw weight. Independent t-tests (≤0.05) found that shorter competitors also have more chance of winning or competing for a world title in featherweight and flyweight. Independent t-tests (≤0.05) also found a significant difference between males and female for S:W. There was a weak, negative correlation and a moderate, negative correlation between stature and rank in lightweight and light heavyweight respectively and a moderate, negative correlation between S:W and rank in featherweight. There were no other significant differences found. Discussion: Overall, whilst MMA competitors have a S:W of 1:1.024, due to the paucity of significant differences found, it was determined that anthropometrical measurements cannot be used to predict success in elite and international mixed martial arts.

SummaryWe have previously shown abnormalities of haemostasis suggestive of intravascular coagulation in patients with malignant hypertension, a condition associated with retinopathy and renal fibrin deposition. To determine whether such abnormalities are specific to malignant hypertension, we have measured several haemostatic and haemorheological variables in 18 patients with malignant hypertension (Group 1), 18 matched healthy controls (Group 2), and 18 patients with non-malignant hypertension (Group 3) matched for renal pathology, blood pressure and serum creatinine with Group 1. Both Groups 1 and 3 had increased mean levels of fibrinogen, factor VIIIc, beta-thrombo- globulin, plasma viscosity and blood viscosity (corrected for haematocrit); and decreased mean levels of haematocrit, antithrombin III and platelet count. Mean levels of fast antiplasmin and alpha2-macroglobulin were elevated in Group 1 but not in Group 3. We conclude that most blood abnormalities are not specific to malignant hypertension; are also present in patients with non-malignant hypertension who have similar levels of blood pressure and renal damage; and might result from renal damage as well as promoting further renal damage by enhancing fibrin deposition. However increased levels of fibrinolytic inhibitors in malignant hypertension merit further investigation in relation to removal of renal fibrin.

To identify the prevalence of early pathology of cardiovascular diseases, a survey of 400 200 girls) in the age group 15 and 17 years old was conducted as a part of routine medical of the level of blood pressure (BP) was carried out, with the calculation of the average level pressure on the basis of three separate measurements estimated by percentile tables for a registration of a standard resting ECG in 12 leads. According to the results of the survey, into 3 groups: with an increase in blood pressure above 95 ‰ (group 1 – 16 people), which recorded in males (p<0,05); Group 2 (67 people) – adolescents with a normal blood pressure level and group 3 of adolescents with a decrease in blood pressure below 5 ‰ changes in the form of rhythm and conduction disturbances were noted in almost every a predominance of sinus tachycardia in the first group. In the third group of adolescents, form of ectopic rhythm and pacemaker migration were significantly more frequently only 78 % of adolescents were referred for consultation and in-depth examination by a pediatric cardiologist.

Introduction: The effect of high serum ferritin levels on long-term mortality in hemodialysis patients is unknown. The relationship between serum ferritin levels and 5-year all-cause mortality in hemodialysis patients was investigated in this study. Methods: A total of 173 prevalent hemodialysis patients were included in this study. The patients were followed for up to 5 years and divided into 3 groups according to time-averaged serum ferritin levels (group 1: serum ferritin <800 ng/mL, group 2: serum ferritin 800–1,500 ng/mL, and group 3: serum ferritin >1,500 ng/mL). Along with the serum ferritin levels, other clinical and laboratory variables that may affect mortality were also included in the Cox proportional-hazards regression analysis. Results: Eighty-one (47%) patients died during the 5-year follow-up period. The median follow-up time was 38 (17.5–60) months. The 5-year survival rates of groups 1, 2, and 3 were 44, 64, and 27%, respectively. In group 3, the survival was lower than in groups 1 and 2 (log-rank test, p = 0.002). In group 1, the mortality was significantly lower than in group 3 (HR [95% CI]: 0.16 [0.05–0.49]; p = 0.001). In group 2, the mortality was also lower than in group 3 (HR [95% CI]: 0.32 [0.12–0.88]; p = 0.026). No significant difference in mortality between groups 1 and 2 was found (HR [95% CI]: 0.49 [0.23–1.04]; p = 0.063). Conclusion: Time-averaged serum ferritin levels >1,500 ng/mL in hemodialysis patients are associated with an increased 5-year all-cause mortality risk.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Background. Many patients with COVID-19 suffer from arterial hypertension and have marked variations in blood pressure (BP) during the acute period of infection. The reasons for such changes are poorly understood. Purpose. To assess the relationship between the level of BP and the severity of changes in the main clinical and laboratory parameters in patients with arterial hypertension and with a moderate course of COVID-19 at the stage of the height of the disease. Materials and methods. The study included 86 hospitalized patients with verified coronavirus disease of moderate severity: 46 of them were male, the median age was 65 years. Patients received adequate hypertension therapy for a long time. After hospitalization, treatment was adjusted if necessary. The level of laboratory parameters in the acute period of the disease was determined, including the electrolytes, C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, ferritin, general blood test, etc. BP measured daily. The relationship between laboratory parameters and BP level was evaluated by nonparametric correlation using the Spearman coefficient and multivariate analysis based on the "generalized nonlinear model". Results. In 67.44% of patients with hypertension, an elevated BP level (>140/90) was observed against the background of moderate COVID-19. There was a significant negative correlation between the levels of CRP and BP throughout the stay in the hospital, the most significant is the 5th day of hospitalization. At the same time, a slightly stronger relationship is observed with diastolic BP (r = -0.4425) than with systolic BP (r = -0.3525). A similar trend is observed in all BP measurements. Besides, a negative correlation was found between potassium levels and BP values. The strongest association of potassium levels is with systolic BP on the day of hospitalization (r = -0.4850) and diastolic pressure on the 1st day of hospitalization (r = -0.3561). Multivariate analysis confirmed independent and reliable "influence" of CRP (p = 0.00018) and potassium (p = 0.03921) as independent predictors of diastolic pressure. Conclusions. Most patients with hypertension and moderate COVID-19 have elevated BP levels. There is a statistically significant negative relationship between the values of BP and levels of CRP and potassium. The obtained data may correspond to the existing hypothesis about the significant role of the kinin–kallikrein system in the pathogenesis of COVID-19.

Objective. To determine the long-term histopathologic changes in nasal mucosa and the relationship between progression of the histopathologic changes and the duration without air current stimulation.Material and Method. Biopsies were taken from the inferior turbinates of 11 laryngeal cancer patients after total laryngectomy. Specimens were stained with hematoksilen-eosin and several histopathologic parameters were examined under light microscopy.Results. All of the patients demonstrated at least one histopathologic abnormality (100%,n=11). Goblet destruction and stromal fibrosis were the most common findings (81%,n=9), followed by focal epithelial atrophy and subepithelial seromusinous gland destruction (45%,n=5), neovascularization and congestion (36%,n=4), complete epithelial atrophy and mixoid degeneration (27%,n=3). According to the duration between laryngectomy and biopsy, patients were grouped in to three: group 1; less than 12 months (36%,n=4), group 2; 12–36 months (18%,n=2), and group 3; more than 36 months (45%,n=5). Only congestion was found to be decreased as the duration increased (P<.005).Conclusion. In laryngeal cancer patients histopathologic changes occur in nasal mucosa eventuate due to the cessation of air current stimulation, however there was no relation between progression of the histopathologic findings and the duration of cessation.

AbstractThis study aimed to noninvasively assess the relationship between the labial gingival thickness (GT) and the underlying bone thickness (BT) of maxillary anterior teeth by two digital techniques. A total of 30 periodontally healthy participants with 172 maxillary anterior teeth were enrolled. GT and BT were measured at 2, 4 and 6 mm apical to the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) by two digital techniques: M1—cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and M2—digital intraoral scanning (DIS) combined with CBCT. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to determine the correlation between GT and BT. A significant negative correlation was identified between GT and BT at 2 mm apical to the CEJ for central incisors (CI), lateral incisors (LI), and canines (CA) both by M1 and M2, while a weak negative correlation at 4 mm apical to the CEJ was observed by M1 for CA. No significant correlation was found at other sites by both M1 and M2. The labial BT was < 1 mm in most cases (85% of CI; 97% of LI; and 90% of CA). Within the limitation of this study, it was concluded that GT and BT seemed to be negatively correlated at 2 mm apical to the CEJ. Therefore, caution is warranted when implant restoration at the esthetic area of the anterior teeth.

Due to the growing number of patients with age-related diseases, the aim of the study was to investigate in the changes of aging rate (AR) in patients with comorbid course of arterial hypertension (H), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) and to study the features of these changes depending on hormonal imbalance. 118 patients (63 women and 55 men, average age — 53.6±4.3 years) were divided into 3 groups: group 1 (n=37) with isolated H; group 2 (n=42) — with H and T2DM; group 3 (n=39) — with H, T2DM and SH. The investigation program included: measurement of anthropometric parameters (blood pressure, height, body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI)), carbohydrate and thyroid metabolism using standard methods, biological age (BA) by V.P. Voitenko et al. Statistical processing was performed using the Statistica for Windows 8.0 software package. When evaluating AR, physiological aging was found in 8 patients (21.6%) of group 1, in 4 (9.5%) patients of group 2 and 3 (7.7%) of patients in group 3. In the overwhelming majority of the examined patients, premature aging (PA) was noted, however, the acceleration of PA between patients of groups 2 and 3 was not differ significantly (p>0.05). The increase in AR in group 2 patients was accompanied by an increase in BA by 7.2 years, in 3 group patients — by 7.3 years compared with their chronological age. A correlation analysis revealed a positive relationship between BMI and coefficient of aging rate (CAR) (r=0.679; p<0.05); BMI and BA (r=0.562; p<0.05) and CAR and the TSH level (r=0.050; p=0.388) in the 3rd group. Thus, the presence of hypertension and comorbid endocrinopathies — T2DM and SH significantly increases the AR and when assessing the effect of endocrine disorders, the presence of T2DM is more important than SH.
