Corporate-backed philanthropic groups have become increasingly involved in political processes in the past ten years. The Koch Brothers’ and their political advocacy groups, have become particularly prominent players. Their influence extends beyond high-profile state-level elections and increasingly have begun investing in municipal affairs of small cities and towns, such as school board elections like Kenosha, Wisconsin and Jefferson County, Colorado in the US. This chapter asks, why do groups like Americans for Prosperity care about small-town school board elections? This chapter highlights two particularly significant local examples in the United States: school board elections in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 2014 and Jefferson County, Colorado in 2015. Through documentary analysis of school board records, news reports, and district evaluations, in both Wisconsin and Colorado, we chronicle the political contest for control of each school board. Our findings illustrate the ideological and political project of corporate, conservative influence in public education in the United States.

For more than tlrree decades, Canada and the United States have used similar mechanisms for ensuring the protection of human subjects involved in biomedical and behavioural research: written guidelines that specify the substantive and procedural requirements of investigators and institutions; individual informed consent, and prior review and approval by interdisciplinary committees. Given the proximity of the countries to one another and the massive amount of trade and commerce that transpires between them, it is not surprising that these countries share a number of values in research. During the past fifteen years, however, both countries have experienced new challenges to their systems. Sorne of the challenges relate to new trends in research, such as genetics studies and massively increased private sector funding for pharmacological research. Other challenges relate to emerging trends in oversight policies and procedures, such as accreditation of ethics committees. Research reflects a country's particular social policies. The responses to emerging trends illustrate how such policies are evolving in sometimes quite different ways in both countries. This reflects the related but distinct political cultures and structures in the two countries. This paper will explore these trends and emerging responses, drawing lessons from each.

The United States has a federal system. One advantage of a federal system is that it can encourage competition among the states resulting in the testing of new policy solutions and the diffusion of best practices. This holds true for online aggression policy, particularly those addressing cyberbullying. This chapter begins with a discussion of the literature on strategies being adopted at the school board level to limit the spread of cyberbullying. It concludes with an overview of current evaluation research comparing recent policies being implemented by local schools.

Within the context of the history of quarantine, both worldwide and in the United States, this essay analyzes current quarantine policies related to Ebola with an inquiry into both related bio-ethical concerns and an analysis of the ways in which emerging Ebola pharmaceutical treatments, particularly the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine, may shift quarantine policies. By way of background, the historical roots of quarantine are first briefly examined alongside an analysis of why quarantine policies were not instituted in relationship to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Then, current quarantine policies and procedures in both the developed and developing world are delineated, with an analysis of the application of these quarantine policies to Ebola. An overview is provided of how new treatment protocols may change Ebola quarantine alongside related bio-ethical concerns.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed the lives of over one million people worldwide, and has affected all aspects of healthcare worldwide, including the delivery of care to patients with fertility-related diagnoses. In the United States, the response of US fertility clinics to the COVID-19 pandemic was coordinated by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). ASRM acted quickly to develop guidelines for limiting fertility treatment and clinic consultations during the early days of the pandemic, and then safely restarting fertility treatment. A survey of patients with fertility-related diagnoses who presented for care during the first months of the pandemic revealed that a majority of patients who presented for care during the early months of the pandemic experienced delayed or cancelled treatment cycles. Patients with infertility subsequently reported a desire to resume fertility care, but emphasized the importance of their clinic having policies and procedures in place to limit the risk of infection.

Self-employment is an important employment option for people with disabilities. It provides flexibility, the ability to work non-traditional hours and to address issues associated with an illness or disability. It particularly addresses accessibility, communication, or transportation barriers for people with disabilities. It is especially useful in rural areas where there are few employers and consequently few employment opportunities. But self-employment is not for everyone, not every business idea is sensible, and not every proposed business is feasible. Rehabilitation agencies and counsellors that work with people with disabilities wishing to start a business usually are operating in unfamiliar territory. For the most part, rehabilitation counsellors are counsellors, not business developers. This article presents a process developed to assist rehabilitation agencies and counsellors to work with a client who wants to start a business. The process was developed after extensive research with rehabilitation agencies and counsellors who indicated they would be more willing to work with a client to start a business if they had guidance from their agency. The following process addresses that need by blending rehabilitation agency policies and procedures with best practice for developing a business.
