The main distinguishing characteristic of SRI GEP is the atmosphere of comeradery, mutual support, youth's admiration for the older generation and respectful, almost touching care for this youth on the part of the "elders". Now for me it is absolutely obvious that maintaining such an atmosphere would have been impossible if the institute had not possess such an astonishingly and professionally top-level group of "elders".

This chapter provides an overview of the second part of the book. This part is the crux of the matter: how to analyze actual data. While this part builds on Part 1, especially on linear algebra fundamentals covered in Part 1, the two are not redundant. The main distinguishing characteristic of Part 2 is its nuanced grayness. In the ideal world of algebra (and thus in most of part 1), things are black or white: two vectors are either mutually orthogonal or not, real numbers are either zero or not, a vector either solves a linear system or does not. By contrast, realistic data analysis, the province of Part 2, is always gray, always involves subjective decisions.

The concept of representativeness is the main distinguishing characteristic of specialised corpora in comparison to other sets of texts. The Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing currently comprises four published subcorpora (astronomy, life sciences, history, and philosophy) plus three others under compilation (physics, chemistry and linguistics). In this paper we aim to assess the lexical density of the text samples in CETA, the Corpus of English Texts on Astronomy, by means of the ReCor tool, a posteriori. The study is motivated by the following question: does quantitative representativeness analysis using ReCor provide, in the form of a cross-check, further validation of previous research on the representativeness of CETA? Previous work (Crespo and Moskowich, 2010) has indicated that the CETA corpus is well designed and valid for the purposes for which it was intended. We will here suggest metrics to measure these findings. The most important contribution of this study is to offer quantitative data collection results using the ReCor tool, which allows data triangulation and consequently ensures overall data quality. Results show that data analysis with the ReCor tool supports previous findings, and thus we are able to verify that CETA is indeed representative of the language of its time and register.

The aim of this Chapter is to present a highly flexible reconfigurable NoC solution for commercial FPGAs on one side, and on the other side, to provide an innovative approach for fast NoC emulation. The reconfigurable on-chip communication solution that is proposed in this chapter is capable of being reconfigured by means of adapting routers, network interfaces and cores themselves. The main distinguishing characteristic of the presented on-chip communication approach is that it permits to distribute the available on-chip communication resources among different communication topologies and thus, independent and application specific communication strategies can coexist and run in parallel. Furthermore, the proposed solution is not limited to NoCs and it permits to build a vari ety of on-chip communication. The proposed method in this Chapter for fast emulation provides a rapid way of validating different communication alternatives. The emulation method is based on the original idea of hard core re-usability through the exploitation of partial reconfiguration capabilities of some state of the art FPGAs. Both aspects have been tested and validated using a proof of concept approach and are discussed along this Chapter.

Employees (N = 170) of a City Hall in Italy were administered a questionnaire measuring collective efficacy (CE), perceptions of context (PoC), and organizational commitment (OC). Two facets of collective efficacy were identified, namely group and organizational. Structural equation models revealed that perceptions of top management display a stronger relationship with organizational collective efficacy, whereas employees’ perceptions of their colleagues and their direct superior are related to collective efficacy at the group level. Group collective efficacy had a stronger relationship with affective organizational commitment than did organizational collective efficacy. The theoretical significance of this study is in showing that CE is two-dimensional rather than unidimensional. The practical significance of this finding is that the PoC model provides a framework that public sector managers can use to increase the efficacy of the organization as a whole as well as the individual groups that compose it.

Relevance. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) negatively affects the prognosis of myocardial infarction (MI). Aim. To evaluate MI clinical features (CF) in men under 60 years old (y.o.) with PH, arising during MI to improve pre-vention and outcomes. Material and methods. The study included men 19-60 y.o. with MI and various dynamics of mean pulmonary artery pressure (MPAP), determined by echocardiography (A. Kitabatake) in first 48 hours (1) and completion of third week (2). Patients were divided into four groups: studied (I) included 67 patients (mean age 50.4±7.1 y.o) with PH (MPAP2 25 and more mm Hg) and normal of MPAP1 level. Group II included patients with a normal MPAP in both phases of study (70; 52.1±6.6 y.o); group III – with elevated MPAP at both study points (149; 51.2±5.5 y.o) and IV – with in-creased MPAP1 and normal MPAP2 (61, 50.5±6.8 y.o). A comparative assessment of the MI CF frequency in selected groups were performed. Results. The study group occupied intermediate place frequency in medical history presence: coronary heart disease (I: 59.5; II: 61.4; III: 63.6 and IV: 48.9%; p = 0.04), chronic heart failure (CHF) (35.7 ; 34.1; 51.1 and 24.5%, respec-tively; p=0.001), repeated (45.2; 42.0; 47.3 and 29.8%) and early recurrent (3.6; 3.4 ; 6.0 and 3.2%; pIII-IV=0.006) MI, Q-MI (44.0; 35.2; 58.7 and 56.4; p=0.001), anginal MI phenotype (75.0; 74.7; 54.3 and 77.7%; p˂0.0001) and acute HF (ACF) (45,2; 36,8; 50,5 и 48,9%; р=0,002). No pulmonary edema was detected in it (p˂0.0001). Conclusions. Men under 60 y.o. with PH resulting from MI occupy an intermediate place in frequency of complica-tions, ACF and CHF in first 56 days of MI during routine examination compared with other MPAP dynamics patients. This confirms the need for additional verification of PH genesis for the appropriate treatment.

Many sequences from number theory, such as the primes, are defined by recursive procedures, often leading to complex local behavior, but also to graphical similarity on different scales — a property that can be analyzed by fractal dimension. This paper computes sample fractal dimensions from the graphs of some number-theoretic functions. It argues for the usefulness of empirical fractal dimension as a distinguishing characteristic of the graph. Also, it notes a remarkable similarity between two apparently unrelated sequences: the persistence of a number, and the memory of a prime. This similarity is quantified using fractal dimension.
