ABSTRACT Background Health care continues to expand in scope and in complexity. In this changing environment, residents are challenged with understanding its intricacies and the impact it will have on their professional activities and careers. Aim Embedding each of the competency elements in residents in a meaningful way remains a challenge for many surgery residency program directors. Methods We established a nonclinical rotation to provide surgery postgraduate year-1 (PGY-1) residents with a structured, multifaceted, largely self-directed curriculum into which each of the 6 core competencies are woven. Posttesting strategies were established for most curricular experiences to ensure to the greatest possible extent that each resident will have achieved an acceptable level of understanding of each of the competency areas before being given credit for the rotation. Results By uniformly exceeding satisfactory scores on respective objective analyses, residents demonstrated an increased (at least short-term) understanding of each of the assessed competency areas. Conclusion Our project sought to address a prior lack of opportunity for our residents to develop a sound foundation for our residents in systems-based practice. Our new rotation addresses systems-based practice in several different learning environments, including emergency medical service ride-along, sentinel event participation, and hospice visits. Several research projects have enhanced the overall learning program. Our experience shows that a rotation dedicated to competency training can provide an innovative and engaging means of teaching residents the value of each element.

It was inevitable for human resource management (HRM) to adopt such an advancement that drastically influenced businesses’ work and management. Digital technology has caused the total re-evaluation and improvement of the procedures and systems concerning different capacities throughout businesses, and the HR role is not an exception. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of digitalization technologies on HRM practices in the automotive manufacturing industry in Malaysia. Recruitment and selection, training and development, and performance appraisal and compensation are the main HRM practices identified as independent variables. A total of 203 respondents were selected for an online survey among employees in the automotive manufacturing industry in Pekan, Pahang. The results show a significant relationship between digitalization technologies and all human resource practices addressed in this study except compensation where the data was obtained and examined using IBM SPSS (Version 27) statistical software. The findings of the study revealed that HRM practices have a significant association with digitalization technologies and, occasionally, with the current and future needs of industrial revolution in manufacturing the industry; further studies can widen their scope to other industries in making Malaysia a developed nation holistically from political and socio-economic perspectives.

Critical and creative thinking are fundamental 21st century skills and ‘general capabilities’ or ‘core competencies’ of many educational systems around the world, and yet there is much confusion and indeed some doubt about whether explicit instruction in critical thinking is either necessary or desirable. Standardised testing, meanwhile, is under fire for encouraging teachers to ‘teach to the test’ in a way that, for many teachers, undermines their capacity to create opportunities for students to engage in critical and creative learning. This study, based on an examination of standardised test (NAPLAN) performance data from students enrolled in courses dedicated to the teaching of critical thinking through the Queensland Government Department of Education’s IMPACT Centre shows that explicit instruction in critical thinking is correlated with significant relative gains when those students are compared with students whose exposure to critical thinking was secondary to domain-specific knowledge. This promises (a) to provide reasons for thinking that explicit instruction in critical thinking is beneficial for students in supporting the core areas of the curriculum measured within standardised tests, and (b) to provide an antidote to the idea that the existence of standardised testing militates against inquiry-based, critical thinking pedagogical practices.

Digitalization is rushing throughout the world, namely, in industrial and societal infrastructures. Hence, digital transformation becomes a pillar of industrial policy, known in Europe as “Industry 4.0,” in China as “made in China 2025,” in Asia as “Smart Cities,” in Japan as “Society 5.0,” and in North America as “Industrial Internet.” These transformations will change the industrial landscape, toward Quality 4.0 and therefore, our lives. The presented research was conducted on quality management employees in Portugal and it aims to analyze if such employees have the perception of the impact of Industry 4.0 in the quality management profession and the required and needed skills. After analyzing the answered questionnaires, 90 results were considered valid. This is the sample of our study. Simultaneously, the goal of this research is also to review and analyze the main topics in progress related to quality management for the fourth industrial revolution and how quality emerges of this change. The professionals that work on quality management must have creative thinking, be leaders, know how to communicate and work as a team, as well as, to have knowledge and understanding of ICT (Information and Communications Technology), and main pillars of Industry 4.0. These are the main findings. Besides that, they must know how to motivate their work teams, be open to change, know how to use Big Data to make decisions and above all, they must know how to manage conflicts. In addition, quality professionals must promote the design and production of first class products, be the defenders of their customers within the organization, and finally, they must create value for the stakeholders.

The present study has been conducted to examine the relationship among the identified core-competencies to have successful e-governance. The study is carried out using a mixed method research, wherein the research model is developed based on the outcomes of exploratory study along with literature support. The model is empirically validated with 359 respondents from the Ministry of Finance, India using structured equation modelling technique. The theory of strategic intent forms the basis of the study. The study revealed the significant relationship amongst the identified core-competencies. The process management (PM) core-competency results in high employee engagement (EE). The PM and EE together lead to high internal service quality (ISQ). ISQ in turn leads to high external service quality (ESQ). This high ESQ leads to enhanced citizen satisfaction (CS). Leadership, culture, and technology moderate the impact of independent variables on dependent variables.

Every curriculum change in Indonesia impacts other components in the national education system, including the learning material. However, main material changes have not been discussed completely. This article presents the analysis result about the impact of 2013 curriculum for Primary School (PS) and Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) in Indonesia on the subject materials. This study used a literature review which examined various applicable 2013 policy documents and textbooks as a representation of the core materials. The findings of this study indicate that the change from the 2006 curriculum to the 2013 curriculum in PS/MI level has an impact on changes in teaching material. The structure and method changes are more structured, hierarchical and not overlap among levels, due to core competencies. The presentation is thematic and from concrete to abstract. Material content also changes. Teaching materials in the 2013 curriculum in PS/MI level are contextual, integrative and focused on character and soft skills. Teaching materials in the 2013 Curriculum also covers critical and creative thinking, communicative, and collaborative learning.
