Com Quantos Adjetivos se Descreve uma Atividade Matemática?

Tomando como ponto de partida o fato de que atividades matemáticas são descritas em livros didáticos, documentos oficiais e artigos acadêmicos por uma gama variada de adjetivos e que não há consenso acerca do significado destes, este artigo tem o objetivo de analisar como professores de matemática descrevem atividades para a sala de aula. Trata-se da replicação de uma pesquisa conduzida com professores de matemática britânicos. Nossos dados foram coletados via questionário eletrônico, no qual professores avaliaram o quão bem 88 adjetivos e expressões descreviam uma atividade matemática escolhida por eles. Esses dados foram analisados por meio de uma análise fatorial exploratória que identificou sete fatores independentes subjacentes aos dados. São eles: Efetividade, Rotina, Exigência, Abstração, Contextualização, Inovação e Interação. Além de uma discussão sobre cada um dos fatores, também são discutidas as semelhanças e diferenças em relação aos resultados obtidos na pesquisa britânica. Espera-se que este resultado ajude a informar o diálogo entre as várias partes envolvidas no ensino de matemática. Além disso, também se discute a relação identificada entre a expressão “resolução de problemas” e o fator Contextualização. Contrariando o que é sugerido em documentos oficiais, nossa análise indica que os professores de matemática no Brasil associam “resolução de problemas” com questões relacionadas a contextos reais e aplicados em detrimento de contextos matemáticos abstratos. Independentemente do motivo por trás dessa associação, este resultado aponta para a necessidade de melhora da comunicação entre políticas públicas e professores de matemática.Palavras-chave: Atividades Matemáticas. Contextualização.AbstractConsidering that mathematical tasks are described in textbooks, official documents and academic articles using a huge variety of adjectives and that there is no consensus around their meanings, this paper analyses how mathematics teachers describe such tasks. In order to do so, we replicated a study conducted with British mathematics teachers. The data was collected through online questionnaires in which teachers graded in a Likert scale how well 88 adjectives and expressions were fit as a description of a mathematical task chosen by them. The data were analysed using exploratory factor analysis and we identified seven independent factors, namely: Efetividade, Rotina, Exigência, Abstração, Contextualização, Inovação and Interação. Besides a discussion of each factor, we also discuss the similarities and differences between ours and the British results. It is expected that this result can inform the dialogue in the field of mathematics teaching and learning. Furthermore, we discuss in this paper a relationship between the expression problem-solving and the factor Contextualization. Differently to what is suggested in official documents, our analysis indicate that Brazilian mathematics teachers are associating problem solving with contextualized, applied, real life questions to a larger extent than with abstract, mathematical contexts. Aside the reasons behind this association, this result points to the need of improving the communication between policy makers and mathematics teachers.Keywords: Mathematical Tasks. Adjectives. Purpose - The Malaysian government has allocated a large budget for Orang Asli primary school education via the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) to help improve Orang Asli pupils’ academic performance including mathematics. Teachers face challenges in ensuring that Orang Asli pupils become competent learners of mathematics. Hence, this study examined the teachers’ perspectives on the issues and challenges in the teaching and learning of mathematics at Orang Asli primary schools in Malaysia. Methodology - In this qualitative study, Two Orang Asli primary schools were randomly selected from eight primary schools within an Orang Asli Settlement in the District of Sungai Siput. The data were collected via focus group discussions and interviews, which were carried out during enculturation visits and were fully transcribed and thematically analysed. The research participants were purposively selected and comprised the schools’ administrators and mathematics teachers. Findings - The results of the data analysis showed that there were two main themes, namely classroom challenges and school challenges, in determining mathematics competence among Orang Asli pupils. Classroom challenges consisted of five sub-themes namely coverage of mathematics syllabus, mathematics teaching and learning resources, pupil engagement, language barrier, and mathematics learning culture. School challenges consisted of two sub-themes namely school attendance and discipline. To enhance mathematics competence among Orang Asli pupils, it is deemed important to conduct programmes and community engagement. Significance - This study contributes to the knowledge of the teaching and learning of mathematics at Orang Asli primary schools. It is recommended that teachers allow Orang Asli pupils to take home their mathematics textbooks so that they can complete their homework at home. Teachers are highly encouraged to conduct mathematics teaching and learning activities in groups to develop meaningful and engaging lessons.

AbstractWith the unveiling in the United States of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics that value inquiry, cross-curricular connections, and the use of technology in instruction, school librarians may be best positioned to collaborate with mathematics teachers to instill these practices into mathematics teaching and learning. However, the mathematics curriculum is often perceived as challenging or even impossible for librarians to connect with. Consequently, such collaboration is often not pursued by either party. This paper examines the factors that shape or hinder collaboration between school librarians and mathematics teachers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with mathematics teachers, school librarians, and school leaders in four middle schools in a highly resourced school district in the mid Atlantic region of the United States. We find several factors that influence the nature and opportunities for collaboration, including: perception; comfort with technology; institutional structures; testing pressure; and knowledge about mathematics teaching and learning. Our analysis reveals pivotal transformations that need to take place in order to strengthen the collaborative relationship between these two domains: (1) changes in the perceptions mathematics teachers and school librarians have of each other, and of various aspects of technology integration in mathematics teaching and learning and collaborative relationships; (2) enhanced structural support at the school district level; and (3) enhanced structural support at the school level to support collaboration. By examining the connections and contexts of these emerging themes from our study, we reveal the impact that school librarians can have in mathematics learning in middle schools.

<div><p>This study aims to examine the relationship between epistemological beliefs, teaching-learning beliefs and assessment beliefs in mathematics education. This research is a quantitative study with a correlational study. Data collection using the survey method with a cross-sectional design. The participants were 71 pre-service elementary school  , mathematics teachers. The data on beliefs were collected through means of a questionnaire. The data collected from the questionnaire were then analyzed quantitatively through descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics utilizes the mean value, maximum value, and standard deviation values. Inferential statistics use the product-moment correlation as well as path analysis. The research results show that there is a positive and significant correlation between static and dynamic beliefs on epistemology of mathematics, and the constructivist beliefs on mathematics teaching and learning, with the productive beliefs on mathematics assessment. In addition, there is seen to be a functional influence between both epistimological beliefs (both static and dynamic), as well as beliefs on teaching and learning (constructivist) and beliefs about mathematic assessment (productive). The results of this research signify the importance of considering one’s beliefs about the epistemology of mathematics and mathematics teaching and learning when constructing their beliefs regarding mathematics assessment.</p></div>

Objective - The implementation of Dual-Language Programmes (DLP) in the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics is an initiative under the ‘Upholding the Malay Language and Strengthening the English Language’ (MBMMBI) policy. Though it has some similarities with the previous policy known as ‘English for the Teaching of Science and Mathematics’ (PPSMI), its execution is idiosyncratic in its own way. Since its inception in 2016, the programme has entered its third cycle involving students in primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. The curiosity to scrutinise the programme implementation has led to this study. The study aims to investigate the execution of this programme and to assess its sustainability. Methodology/Technique – Gleaning through the students’ language capabilities, attitudes, teachers’ support and acceptance of the programme, the study uses a questionnaire with open-ended questions and focus group discussions to unravel the aforementioned issues. 1,530 students from secondary schools across Malaysia were selected as the respondents of this study. Findings - The results reveal findings that may represent a measure on the direction of this programme. Looking from the student perspective, the challenges confronted in addition to those put forward may further serve as an indicator for the sustainability of the program. Novelty – This study infers how the programme can be further enhanced in terms of its implementation in its fourth year since inception. The findings of this study may assist policy makers in shaping the direction of the programme. Type of Paper: Empirical. The April 2017 National Science Foundation-funded Breaking the Boundaries in STEM Education conference brought together Southern California science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) faculty to explore equity, problem-solving, and computing in an interdisciplinary manner. Two main research questions guided the overall scope of the conference: (1) What are the common threads across disciplines to approach the teaching and learning of skills that are relevant in STEM? (2) What are the challenges and barriers that need to be overcome in order to foster collaboration across disciplines to impact the teaching and learning of skills relevant in STEM? We describe the background of the conference and provide an overview of the questions addressed.

ResumoO presente estudo é uma pesquisa bibliográfica inspirada no Estado do Conhecimento, tendo como objetivo compreender focos temáticos nas produções acadêmicas que utilizam/abordam o ensino de matemática através da resolução de problemas. Para tanto, realizou-se um mapeamento das produções acadêmicas publicadas nos periódicos: BOLEMA, Boletim GEPEM, Zetetiké, Educação Matemática em Revista e Educação Matemática Pesquisa, entre janeiro de 2011 e junho de 2019. This chapter discuss how Problem-Based learning (PBL) helps to achieve this century's approach to teaching and learning for students in higher educational institutions. If adopted, this method of teaching will enable student to attain learning skills (skills, abilities, problem solving, and learning dispositions that have been identified) to acquire a lifelong habit of approaching problems with initiative and diligence and a drive to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for an effective resolution. And they will develop a systematic approach to solving real-life problems using higher-order skills.
